Dave Derby of The Dambuilders talks about the importance of college radio | Matt Connarton Unleashed
Speaker 1: Something specific I really want to ask you about too,
Speaker 1: is something that I am very passionate about is college radio.
Speaker 1: And I feel like I'm curious to get your thoughts
Speaker 1: on how on the role that college radio, you know,
Speaker 1: especially in a place like Boston, which has you know,
Speaker 1: just a lot of obviously an incredible music scene, and
Speaker 1: a big part of that is is college radio in Boston.
Speaker 1: But I'm curious about the role of college radio in
Speaker 1: helping the dam Builders in the beginning. Obviously you were
Speaker 1: getting exposure, you know, on MTV. Like I said, I
Speaker 1: remember seeing the video for Shrine, but also at college radio.
Speaker 1: I feel like that's part of part of a big
Speaker 1: part right of the dam builders escension.
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, And I am super passionate about
Speaker 2: college radio myself. You know, I Boston, being in Boston
Speaker 2: in the nineties, especially like you know, pre internet era,
Speaker 2: like college radio was just a thing where you know,
Speaker 2: I just remember like planning my days around shows that
Speaker 2: we're on different stations and just you know, switching from
Speaker 2: from station to station, you know, like n B R
Speaker 2: and e R S and hr B and uh, you know,
Speaker 2: all all the stations there, VBC, but uh, you know,
Speaker 2: so that was a huge thing. Another thing, and also yeah,
Speaker 2: n b R like we one thing that will be
Speaker 2: kind of tv D in terms.
Speaker 3: Of how how we release it, but we're definitely gonna
Speaker 3: there's some rarities that we have, like live radio performances
Speaker 3: where you know, the band used to like we used
Speaker 3: to you know, we used.
Speaker 2: To write songs sometimes like right before the show or
Speaker 2: even on the moment, and there there's some there's some
Speaker 2: really cool nineties dam Builders performances that we were planning
Speaker 2: to release in some form and so those are all
Speaker 2: about Collegrado Colladrated for us was like you know, it
Speaker 2: was and I think this is very true, like back
Speaker 2: back in the nineties, it was like, you know, it
Speaker 2: was like going into the studio was like prepping something
Speaker 2: for the studios. Like the chance to be live on
Speaker 2: the radio was just such an important thing. And in
Speaker 2: Boston people you know, even before you know bands would
Speaker 2: release like vinyl or CDs, they just do, you know,
Speaker 2: radio tapes and kind of take them around and you know,
Speaker 2: and I just remember loving radio tapes. I don't know
Speaker 2: if they were ever even actually released by by you know,
Speaker 2: some local bands in Boston's and then just a whole
Speaker 2: other thing about college radio, just just since you mentioned it.
Speaker 2: I mean, this is just like so just for fun.
Speaker 2: One other thing that I'm doing with with some old
Speaker 2: friends is starting a band that is is actually a
Speaker 2: cover band that is totally devote devoted to really like
Speaker 2: mid to late eighties college radio in America before it
Speaker 2: was called indie. Yeah, so it's just like kind of
Speaker 2: trying to capture and that's when I went to college,
Speaker 2: and that's you know, I still have this like memory
Speaker 2: of hearing like Husker Do for the first time and
Speaker 2: stuff like that. So that's so we're only playing songs
Speaker 2: from that that era and it's just so fun. Yeah,
Speaker 2: it's like a time capsule. Oh that's wild.
Speaker 1: Wow, that's so cool.
Speaker 2: Yeah, I see that as a real celebration to college radio.
Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean college radio was just such a
Speaker 2: such a huge thing to us, and it's still kind
Speaker 2: of it still is. Yeah, Yeah, it's still so vibrant.
Speaker 2: I mean, yeah in New York, the New York area,
Speaker 2: the FUV things just really fun and you know, FMU
Speaker 2: like people are super into those stations and you know,
Speaker 2: just kind of still really important. And the folks who
Speaker 2: are DJs are really kind of super important too. I think,
Speaker 2: you know, sustaining any scene that definitely dreamed in New
Speaker 2: York scene
Speaker 1: As well, oh, no doubt, no doubt,
