are well into our number two New Marrow dose of Matt Connorton Unleashed and we
are live from the studios of WMNH ninety five point three FM Inglorious Downtown Manchester,
New Hampshire. Jenny is here as well at the news desk present account
for yes and we have a great band who has joined us in studio or
most of the band is with us. Dark Rain is here. Hello,
good morning, Hello, Hello, welcome everybody actually here. We'll we'll start
with you if you can tell us who you are, what you do in
the band. We'll kind of go around and then we'll and then we'll hear
you play. My name is Kelly. Everybody calls me gh while I'm on
stage, and I am the biggest diva out of the four of us at
the moment. It's yeah, why do they call you g H? It's
the way I spell my name, Kelly. It's k E L L E
I g H. So they just call me for sure. I gotcha,
Okay, okay. And you, sir, Yeah, I'm Dudley. I
play guitar and I'm the other singer in the band. I'll do a lot
of the business end of stuff. Founding member. Yeah, very good,
very good, all good stuff. And you, sir, and Brian.
I play rhythm guitar, all right, and a little bit of backing vocals
here and there. Very good, very good. And uh. And we
also have are you the manager? Are you the Yeah? I do their
road managing. My name is Echo. I go by Echo Ray the rock
and Redhead. I do the stage managing and I also do merch sales and
promotion, booking, that sort of stuff. Excellent, excellent. How long
have you worked with Dark Ray Dark Rain. I've been working with for just
a few months now. We've we've been friends for half a lifetime. Oh
yeah, very good, very good. We should mention too. That track
that we played playing with fire and by the way, but you know,
full disclosure, part of why I picked that is it's six minutes long,
so it's good for the changeover when you all are getting set up. It's
a good, good, long song. But that is because I think I
heard you say that was your favorite. It's one of my favorite, one
of your favorite. I like that too. I like all the tracks,
all the studio tracks you sent me. But yeah, that one, that
that is a that is great. That is really really good. It punches
in the face. Yeah, really good stuff. But we're dying to hear
you play live if you want to. Oh, we should mention too.
So you're missing somebody right your base. Our bass players home sick. We
figured we wouldn't bring the disease down from me and appreciate. I appreciate it.
He's recuperating for the show next week, gotcha go true? Yeah,
we have an amazing show next week, so we want him to be up
and ready to go up and ready for that one. Where are you playing?
We're playing at o'donna Hughes in Brunswick, Maine. It is a fundraiser
that Echo has put on a letter tell you a little bit more about it,
But we just wanted to do something for the survivors of that Lewiston mouse
shooting. Yeah. We have a couple of friends in the music field with
us that have lost close loved ones and it's just our way to hey,
we're here for you. We got you six you know. Okay, So
very cool, very very cool. All right, Well, we're dying to
hear you play. I'll kind of ride the faders as we go, all
right, but we'll do we'll do a song off the off the CD,
the American Dream, which is when we're currently promoting. This is a one
of solo. Morecistically, it's called the Shades of August. All right,
dark Rain live in studio. She left him with no choice. She gave
of her time to other boys. What did they was going on because we
all know that he did nothing wrong when I left down on your road,
have no place to call your no mom's no on your phone. Message is
from the unknown. It's chid loggage shits of argain will time on lever with
a time nehver head. It's a child logue, a slight shreds of argain.
Ship didn't hurt so bad. She now knows what she's lost. Now
that she knows she's paid a cost, we know she can't come back again.
Boy, remember every now and there were not left down on your own,
have a face to all your no mother missed us on your phone a
message just rounding your alone long as she's of hocky will time ve wa a

listen, it's from me. It's a h long shades of U time.
It's a shed fuck. It's just like shades of augain. Ship's all day,
very nice, dark rain. Live in studio with us here on Matt
Connorton Unleashed. We are live from the studios of w m n H ninety
five point three f M on this Saturday morning. And uh, that that's
I love that. That was awesome. The two of you singing together too,
is really good. There's there's just something really uh you just you sound
really good besties. Yeah, you guys really do. I mean that's the
first thing that I noticed was your harmony together is really beautiful. Thank you
so much. Almost sound like one voice. It'll be a new song that
makes it, if that makes sense. Do you do that on a lot
of songs where you trade off on the vocals? Yeah, yeah, it's
pretty much a duality. But it's like I call it, like the sweet
and the melancholy. My voice is not a natural singer with Kelly's got this
beautiful, awesome, powerful voice, but I think they blend well. Yeah,
yeah, there's a contrast there that there really works. How long has
Dark Rain been around? How long have you been a band? That question?
So we started out Kelly and I and well, it's it's kind of
where we we morphed from another band. It was called Strictly Business. We
morphed into Dark Rain. Brian had just stopped playing with us, and we
it was myself, Kelly a drummer front of ours, guitarist and a bass
player obviously, and we were around for like a couple of years. In
ninety nine two thousand, did a lot of shows, got pretty busy and
we played played down a mass a lot. We were doing getting kind of
a good following and had a couple of record deals on the table, and
then Kelly got pregnant, you know, had a baby. Yeah, so
they could kind of full this off track and we're getting back. Then we
went through some lineup changes and stuff. In about twenty eleven or twelve,
I decided to kind of put the band back together, so to speak,
and all the original members came back except for the bass player, and we
were working our stuff and we've been pretty much consistent since then. Brian came
back. Our friend Ben Hursty who had been an original member. He'd been
over overseas for a while and he'd come back and he joined up and eventually
decided to leave again. And that's when Brian came back to us, and
we h we've been pretty much continuing on since. We put out two three
albums. Three albums right now, ones out of print, but the two
newer ones are there and We're working on an acoustic album to be released sometime
this next year before we do our next big follow up. Yeah, and
just keep pushing or playing your eye out for the thirteenth step. Yeah,
that's okay, that's that's gonna be the name event. Okay, I'm horrible.
I always steal the naming game, and I told Kelly she could have
this one. She's been pushing the thirteenth step for a while. So yeah,
like everything has a twelve step program, and I like to go above
and beyond, So I think the thirteenth step kind of fit for us.
Yeah, I like it. I like it. Now, that's not that
exact. Now. These studio tracks? Are these from a current album that
you have out now? The ones? They center from the American Dream.
It's our current CD. Okay, okay, yeah, the newest one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I really like Uh, I really like these.
Where where did you record home? Yeah? In the the last last
two c the last two CDs before that, great guy up in Thompson,
me and Jerry Paron owns a music store and he owns music studio. We
recorded with him and it sounded great. It's just I really have been working
hard to learn the whole crafting of recording and put myself together a studio at
the house so's we had Dark Green Studios. Now we record other artists as
well. Oh excellent, and we we've been slowly building that. And we
did the whole CD from start to finish, except for the mastering I brought
back to Jerry so I could have a fresh set of ears on it.
Yeah, and I was pretty happy with the result. I thought it came
up pretty decent for doing it at home. Yeah, it's amazing. You
know, the stuff they used to do back fifty years ago with like the
Beatles and stuff, you can do it at your home studio now. So
yeah, yeah, that's something that comes up a lot on the show.
Is you know, you know, we've got all these different options as far
as how you record, and you know, and there's there's still a ton
of studios out there that you can go to, or you can learn to
do it yourself, or you can learn to do it yourself at home and
then bring another artists to record them. Do have you recorded a lot of
artists? I'm just starting. I've got a few and I'm still want to.
I went back to going back to school again too, So getting some
more knowledge under my belt, and I've taken a few in recently. I'm
hoping to get more to come in once we get to do. We're doing
some remodel on the studio too, so yeah, make it a little nicer.
Yeah, excellent, excellent and uh all right, so how did Echo,
how did you come into this in terms of working with the band?
Oh, I'm sorry, I'm having an issue with your mike. Okay,
here we go. I think I got you. I was there, you
are, so as I said, I've been really good friends with these guys
for the better part of twenty years I think now, and just recently,
over the spring and summer of this past year, I decided that I was
going to take the leap and work professionally with musicians because nothing I love more
than pushing local music. And you know, we wouldn't have national bands if
they didn't start somewhere. So I go around and I scout out all these
great bands and if they need help selling their merch or if they need help
push their their name around or whatever, and then I'll step in and do
what I girl. Yeah, yeah, girl, yeah. So Dudley messaged
me up like, we've got a bunch of gigs and we could really help
use somebody to help us with merch And I don't think I've missed a gig
since August. Everyone she's always ready to go. I'm like, do you
want to get up tomorrow morning if you're ready to go by seven am and
to go to the radio. She's like, sure, I work nights.
I don't get out of work until almost two o'clock in the morning. For
seven am is not my jam. Yeah, Well, I do you want
to play another song? I'd I'd love to hear another live song if you're
just joining us. We have Dark Rain with us live in studio and they're
going to play something for us. So this one's off the American Dream as
well. It's called It's kind of Weird because we mostly a rock band.
This is kind of a little bit of a country slash, i'd say hip
hop flavor with Brian's guitar line. It's called stay with Me Tonight all right
on the persis You and I was covering enough All Loves, the middle of
Your Time, when ging you all and a way to make you mine Seeing
to Night. Well, the Dancings and Naked by the moon life. Hope
you and my wealth is all right? Just ste just stay with me.
Then you're dreading up blocking, Please, how's gonna read your bill? Who's
gonna sell your mind? Go for you're stealing welcome ass and naked by the
day. Hope you and I shall be a sorry st Just you have a
thing an just stay away. You can answers and make a body only my
examp, all right, you stay world, Just stay with the Oh that's
awesome, awesome, Dark Dark Reign is with us live in studio. I
was thinking we could play another studio track you had mentioned. Well, the
name of the album is American Dream, and of course this title track is
is really great too. I was thinking maybe we could give this a listen
and then we'll come back and talk some more. What are you thinking?
Alright, all right, check this out. This is American Dream from the
band Dark Bout my fears at the time, the way in side but now
dead stand out around your barricane as what la or am about your domas what
a bad boy right against the time? So a barricane? That's good.
That is American Dream and the band is a Dark Rain and we have them
live in studio with us. How how long was the drive for you all?
Where are you located it? Because about quarter two and a half hours?
Oh my god, wow three and a half for me, I live
an hour away from the guys. Wow. Well, we we really appreciate
you being here today. That's that's a haul. It wasn't so bad.
I didn't crash it last Yeah, I made it a little bit easier.
Yeah, yeah, no, no, we appreciate you. Uh, we
appreciate you being here. Now. When when did the album come out?
Has it been out for a while or digitally it dropped? Did I want
to say digitally and physically dropped different times? But yeah, so like about
a year now. We've been tour behind it. Yeah, and we just
started we like, we just started releasing videos, like there's an official music
video for the American Dream that you just heard on YouTube. For Playing with
Fire lyrics for Playing With No official videos we have the one for American Dream,
uh walking out of HG Double Hockey Sticks Part two and uh you can
say hell oh hell yeah, and the song. All three of those are
released so far. We're still working on the other new one. It's their
new My new Passion is doing the music videos, so oh cool. Creative
wise, do you do those? Are you in charge of that? Yeah,
I'm pretty much most of We're going to get some pointers. Yeah,
that's another That's another thing too. You know, we were talking earlier about
how we live in a time where you have all these different options for recording
also for making music videos, you know, I mean you can you know,
you can use an iPhone and record, or you can upscale from there.
But it's it's amazing. It's funny too because some people, people who
don't know, some people have this idea that the music videos are dead,
you know, because MTV doesn't doesn't do it anymore and whatnot and hasn't for
decades actually now at this point, or VH one. But uh but actually,
really there's more music videos than ever because of YouTube. I mean,
some major artists who have you know, like a gazillion dollars will put out
a video for I remember Beyonce did that at one point. Like maybe this
might have been like ten years ago, but she released an album and when
the album came out, a video for every single song. Oh yeah,
it came out at the same time. It was like, wow, that
must have been very expensive. But yeah, I mean really, there's more
music videos than ever. It's it's uh, the more choices awhere to watch,
just like with your viewing chiv choices, more stuff out there. Yeah,
more content than ever, but also yeah, you're you're competing with more.
Yeah, it's not concentrated anywhere, right right. I feel like with
a video too, you can get more context of where your artist is coming
from. Everybody takes a song differently as to like how the original artist wrote
it and then you read you watch the video or like, oh crap,
that's what they were really talking about, but that's not how I related it
to my life, right right, So, I mean it's kind of cool
to do it that way, and that's kind of why I like doing the
videos too. It gives them, gives me a kind of a chance to
add more to the interpretation of it. I'm good with people taking a song
we write and making it their own and what it means to them, you
know, Like playing with Fire is a good example. Like it's when we
talk about a lot, it's you know, for us, it's about you
know, kind of like you get two really really good friends, you know,
do they take the step and cross the line to make it more than
just a friendship. And do you mess that up? Do you play with
because I can hurt you and you can hurt me too, But I'm kind
of willing to take that chance with you because right, I like playing with
fire. That's the song, Like, like I tell people from stage,
playing taking the chance and playing with fires better than being left out in the
cold. Yeah. Yeah, if you don't take the step, you don't
know, you can miss out on something good. Or maybe you're not.
I mean I don't know, right, it could be crap. Only one
way to find out, Yeah, one way to got to take that step
and just go with it, right, right, do you want to play
another live song for us? Sure? We do something off the next CD,
well do you? This is called our public service announcement talking about the
harmonies, and this is we always tell people to worry about the breast cancer.
My mother had breast cancer. I'm a very strong advocate for women making
you know, get get your exam, get checked men too as well,
but very very very adamant on you know, save the tatas. So that's
my first and foremost uh public service announcement. And you mentioned men too.
That's something Jenny talks about a lot of encouraging men to you know, I'm
a breast cancer survivor. My mother's too, congratulations. And and and we
know someone who had well, actually a couple of people had a couple of
friends that are men who have had breast cancer. Yeah, I mean they
know, want to make friends. The stage four right now, I get
checked, get checked it. It takes the pecks boys check the p I
like that. Awesome. So that's our serious public service announcement obviously. Then,
so Kelly and I have both like different recreational items. I personally like
a good drink every once in a while, so I'll call Yeah. And
I like to smoke because it's legal in our state, you know, not
so legal here, I guess. So this is this is a little diddy
about about about both of those items. It's called Forty's. On the next
s we have coming out all right, very good dark rain live in studio
with us run down the road man, phoony in my hands. You're kind
of heady. You tell me where to go and got on my ass,
send or something with this bag well the grass, Yeah, trying to make
a somewhere gong thing I can make it have. I love this morning.
I'm not breaking Many years I went back, there's that Bucky you want you
smiling here? Where are me? Yeah? Uh willamen, miss n never
even in my name? Yes, in a hurry out of my way.
Really years I went by. I guess that is the trend was. Yeah,
the more Fras gave me a party outswer, they gave me a bag
of breed. Here I go again, yea god again, play the same
who I love it? Dark Rain, Dark Rain Live in the studio with
us this morning on Matt Connorton Unleashed. We are live from the studios of
w m n H ninety five point three FM and Glorious Downtown Manchester in New
Hampshire. If you have any questions or anything feedback input for the band,
the studio line is open six oh three two five oh six oh seven,
six oh three two five oh six oh seven. We don't have our usual
Facebook live feed because Facebook is being Facebook, but so we're we are strictly
audio this morning, but uh, but you can stream the show of course
at w m n H Radio dot orgon you can always go to my website
Matt Connorton dot com. For all your live streaming options and social media links
and contact info and show archives, et cetera, et cetera. But we
are very happy to have Dark Rain in studio with us. And do you
guys, so, are you playing a lot of shows these days? Are
you planning out a lot or yeah? We played almost every week month,
every weekend. It's part of our part of our curse, we've been we've
had a really hard time finding a steady drummer. Yeah, because we'll get
We'll get somebody on board. We've gone through. We had we had a
study drummer for years and years and years, Chris Williams, the guy that
was originally with us, great drummer, and uh, he eventually left,
went to another band, and we got another guy and he lest a little
while, and we get another guy. He lasted for We won't go into
that discussion, I guess, but we is that the show we got a
plastic one show I was talking about that shall be named. But that sounds
like a good story. It's a lot of drama. But then we get
another guy named Devin Mallard who was really good and he actually did the American
Dream City with us, and he was good. He just you start having
some some physical issues and stuff. That's why he's not playing with us now.
But so a lot of times we actually use a digital drummer, which
is a little weird, which is really cool. Actually people like drummer and
like, well, this is Scott Free, He's our drummer. It's actual,
it's not like a drum machine. It's actual tracks that people have played
and stuff and so, and sometimes we do like a different some shows we
have live drummer. Totally depends what the situation is. So we keep getting
a drummer in, we'll work them. We had a guy last time when
we worked up three months, rehearsed, rehearse, rehearsed, and yeah,
totally into this. I love to play every week and I want to be
out there. I want to be playing, you know. Gave him a
list of of upcoming shows and he's, I can't do that. There's too
many. Wow really yeah yeah. First he sitting there going, oh wow,
I'm like, we told you this from day one. It happens pretty
regularly. So up front, like if you're not one hundred percent and you
don't want to do this, then don't waste our time, please, because
but so we had a group of four of us that play out. We
have different rummers that sit in with us. Sonny Robinson from Twisted Roots,
Yeah, we got from He's going to be doing tracks on the next CD
for us as well. And Christ's in us pretty regularly off and on at
least couple of times a year. Just yeah. We have good friends to
do it, but we would love to find a permanent rummers. So somebody
has to be able to play all willing to play all the time. We
travel all over New England. Yeah, we've gone as far as New York,
but like we're really like you in on Providence right now. We're doing
a lot of shows in Rhode Island. We were down there last week.
We work with a guy named Justin mccott from Voltage. It's Voltage and he
does he does a lot of the shows that used to be the booker for
and the Vault and stuff down in Bedford. He's got us some good gigs
and we're playing down there and you know, playing Rhode Island and mass in
New Hampshire, and we played up here a little while ago. Excellent,
yeah, excellent, love them oh yeah too, yeah, absolutely absolutely,
yeah, drummers. That's been a topic on the show quite a bit.
It seems like for one thing, every drummer is in like ten bads.
That's exactly. Yeah. And my theory, uh, you know, people
have heard me say this a million times, but my theory about drummers is
when you're a kid, when you're growing up and you first start getting interested
in playing an instrument, you got to have the talk with your parents.
I want to play drums. That's the first instrument they were going to try
to talk you out of. They don't want to want all the boys,
you know that or maybe the tuba would would they would try to talk you
out of that too. Probably I got his little one playing the drums.
Oh really Yeah. He's hooked on music. Yeah, good, good,
like even the oldies too, like not just like current music. Like kid
likes Elvis, Yeah, like Buck Cherry. He likes Chuck Berry, Yeah,
like all of them. He's he's got an eclectic taste of music.
He likes to sing kiss with us too. Nice. We have a barbecue
every year and he'll get up there and he was singing, Oh god,
who's like two up there singing kiss with Annie? You know, get the
little Ones in there. Yeah, yeah, very good. My favorite band.
Yeah really yeah, it's the Psycho Circuit Store with Kiss Yeah yeah,
excellent, excellent, Well we should We'll play another studio track. Actually,
the song Poison Inside I think is really good. Should we play that one?
That's a good one too. That has to do with that situation we're
talking about with the drummer and the drama. Yea, yes, yeah.
Is that the same drummer that didn't want to play any shows or is that
no? No, the drummer named Oh god. It was such a rough
It was a rough period for us. I literally had to beg my best
day, like you are not leaving music over this. This is like how
bad that situation was made play a show? It made him. I dragged
his but oh, I can say, asked well all the way down where
we're in New Hampshire, mask the Lazy Dog and did a podcast with Jeff
Royd's Yeah, Dudley did not want to. I'm like, dude, we're
going down, you bringing your guitar. I'm not letting you get out.
We're going to have a last and one day we lost like half the bands.
One of those situations and it was a bad situation all together personally.
So yeah, we got a lot of songs out of it. Though.
Well there you go, probably a whole album worth of music that situation.
Well that's good, you know, I always say, I mean, if
you can take bad things and create something positive out of them, yeah,
come on the other side of it better. So yeah, exactly, let's
give this a listen then, cool. So this is this is topical Poison
Inside and the band is a Dark Rain. Check this out s second,
verybody can see happen. Then when did you like that? Chi I gather
my boy, this thing that everything is there. The boy I never no
Vodia. Let's say black I ever no Boia. Let's say all right,
Poison Inside. The band is Dark Rain. They are here with us,
live in studio. I just got a long fade out. I like it.
That's kind of a lost art. You don't hear long fade outs as
much as you used to, But no, I dig it Dark Rain live
in studio with us. You all want to play one more acoustic song and
then we'll, uh sure, and then we'll talk a little bit more.
Plug what you got coming up, and then we'll we'll end with We have
one more studio track too that we'll play at the end. But so the
song that we're actually going to do acoustically goes hand in hand with the one
that you want to play that's recorded. So this is I am a domestic
violence survivor, as I was telling you on that little break, and I
decided to write a song about it and kind of make the story like like,
don't keep it hidden, you know, like it the more that it's
brought out there, the more will come for it and be like this is
not socially acceptable. So this is my domestic violence story in a song,
This is never More. He came out of nowhere like an angel performer.
He was a mystery, but the devil dingers guys like me like a miestro.
And I was locked inside my mind, perched like a ray van never
mobly be mine, never more. Side of sack, beside this may he
man Bede Jane s alive. I can see you right through you before the
lies brull out your mouth. Beware of casting stones when you live in a
glasshouse. Through all of your trauma, you blacken my tell tale heart.
I never felt so well day. Wish we could go back to the store
forget that never more side, sick inside, describe them snap by. If

Rain. This is called Skit and this this relates to the song you just
played, right it does. The chorus literally talks about you know, I'm
tired of playing the games. This is not a role in my life that
I want to play with you. Yeah. It's almost like the precursor to
the other song, because this is when Kelly and I are both going through
really bad parts of bad situations and I don't want to do this, but
I want. I'm still here, you know, stuck in that. How
do I get out of it before it turns into you know, the Nevermore
song? So okay, it started out with Skit and then went into Nevermore,
So it was like a precursor. Okay, okay, very cool.
Oh and thank you for the CDs. By the way, I should mention,
yeah, we're not on Facebook today so I can't hold them up for
everybody, but The American dream and The Long Road Home. This came out
before The American Dreamer. Yeah, that's our last CD. That's seventeen tracks
almost like yeah, yeah, you can buy them digitally, Like I said,
you know any of the digital retailers Apple Music, Yeah, yeah,

to get known, but we actually make money off those if they buy him
somewhere or at a local show. Yeah yeah, support to local musicians.

that's that's for sure. That's for sure. Dark Reign thank you all
again so much. This has been Thank you for having us absolutely and this

Echo's and autonogy epics have been as much of a constant in cinema as
hot, fresh, buttered popcorn. These films are lengthy in nature, wide
awe inspiring sets, fight scenes, and special effects, coupled with dynamite performances
to tell a story that spans time and leaves an undeniable impact on the viewer.
As synonymous as popcorn is to film, one genre of film is synonymous
with epics. That is the quote unquote sand in sandal films or films about
ancient Rome in this week's film is one of the best ever released in two
thousand. Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator introduces us to Roman General Maximus Deretus
Meridius Russell Crowe in his breakthrough Academy Award winning performance, who is selected by
Marcus Aurelius Western film legend Richard Harris in one of his final roles, to
succeed him. However, those plans are thwarted by his son Comedists played by
Joaquin Phoenix, who murders him and kills Maximus's family and sets Maximus through the
path of slavery in being a colisseum Gladiator. However, Maximus' popularity grows and
it leads him with the chance to avenge the death of his family and emperor
in a final climactic battle with Comedists. In our introductory clip, we hear
the great General Maximus rally his troops before a battle shortly after the film begins.
Our next clips show Marcus Aurelius with both men. First. With Maxim,
we hear the tender care and honesty he has with Maximus. This hearkens
to a father and son like relationship that two have. We will then see
his interaction with his own son Comedists, where Marcus admits his failures as a
father. As he tells Commodists he is being bypassed as successor, is giving
this role to Maximus. We hear the pain of regret. It was so
fragile, and I fear that it will not survive the winter. Maximus,
let us whisper. Now together, you and I. You have a son.
Tell me about your home. My house is in the hills above Tahila,
very simple place. Pink stones are warm in the sun, kitchen garden
smells of herbs in the day, jasmine in the evening. Through the gators,
a giant poplar, figs, apples, pears, who soil Marcus black
black like that my wife's here grapes on the south slopes alas on the north.
While ponies plain him else they teach my son. He wants to be
one of them. Remember the last time you were two years two hundred and
sixty four days, and this morning I envy you, Maximus. It was
a good home worth fighting for. There is one more duty that I asked
of you before you go home. What would you have me do, Susan.
I want you to become the protector of Rome. After I die,
I will empower you to one end alone, to give power back to the
people of Rome and end the corruption that has crippled it. You accept this
great honor that I have offered you with all my heart. Now, Maximo,
that is why it must be you. But surely a prefect, a
senator, somebody who knows the city, who understands her politics. But you
have not been corrupted by our politics. And Commoduce Commodus is not a moral
man. You have known that since you were young. Commodus cannot rule.
He must not rule. You're the son that I should have had. Commodcell
except my decision. He knows that you command the loyalty of the army.
I need some time, so by sunset I hope you will have agreed.
Now embrace me as my son, and bring an old man another blanket.
And now, Marcus in Commondas, are you ready to do your duty for
Rome? Yes, father, you will not be emperor, which why the
old the man is to take my place. My pause will pass to Maximus
to hold in trust until the Senate is ready to rule once more. Rome
is to be a republic again. Acts. Yes, my decision disappoints you.
He wrote to me once, listing the forty virtues wisdom, justice,
fortitude, and temperance. As I read the list, I knew I had
none of them, But I have other virtues for them. Ambition that can
be a virtue when it drives us to excel, Resourceful, his courage,
perhaps not on the battlefield, but that are many forms of courage, devotion
to my family, to you. But none of my virtues won your list.
Even then, it was as if you didn't want me for your son.
Commonness, you go too far. That's the faces of the god for
waste. Please, if you are to make you proud, one kind word,
one fuck where you best mean your chest an help me tight? It
would have been like the sun of my heart for thousand years. What is
this gonna mean? You hate so much? All I have wanted was to
the fty Caesar father, commodness. You are false as a son. Is
my failure as a father? F I would put to the whole world to
you, what don't Rea love me? I mentioned at the beginning of this
review that these epic films almost always have amazing performances, and this film is
certainly not an exception. As a matter of fact, it could be viewed
as the standard the aforementioned performance of pro Nonwithstanding, Joaquin Phoenix used his performance
in this film to shoot into the upper tier of Hollywood actors, a spot
he has not seeded since. Our next scene shows the bevy of emotions he
brought into this role. Lost, jealousy, anger, pride, deception,
deceit, greed, callousness, they're all here. In the first part of
the scene, Communist confronts his sister, who he has lusted over, and
callously explains how he is taking her son Lucius away from her. Then,
before his climactic fight with Maximus, he confronts him as he is tied to
a post, and in a brief moment, we are teased with a possible
love he may have for Maximus, but that changes as he coldly stabs him
in the kidneys, debilitating him for their final battle, and demands that the
wounds be covered by armor for their climactic showdown. Thanks donephew. What if
his mother? Should they share love us fate? Should that be messiful?
Commit us? The messful Lucius will stay with me now, and if your
mother so much as looks at him and the manner that displeases me, you
will die. She decides to be know and takes her owners, he will
die. As for you. You will love me. That's I love to
you. You will provide me with an air of pure blood, so that
Commodus and this colty will prove hlosity. Am I not my sphone? I'm
not hustlephone and a son I obey. Nothing happens to anyone that he is
not fitted by nature to bear as they called for you. The general who
became a slave, the slave who became a gladiator, the gladiator defied and
not striking story. Now that people want to know how the story ends,
only a famous death will do what could be more glorious than to challenge the
Emperor himself in the Great Arena. You would fight me? Why not?
Do you think I'm afraid? I think you've been afraid all your life,
unlike Maximus the Invincible, who knows no fear, And you're a man who,
once her death, smiles at us. All all a man can do
is smile back. I wonder did your friend spire at his own death.
You must know you're to your father. You loved my father. I know,
but so did I. That makes us by this, doesn't it?
Smile for me? Now? Stop on his arm Concealed Route. In two
thousand, this film took Hollywood by storm. It was released on May fifth
of two thousand, right around the time for summer blockbusters, but it not
a normal time for films looking for Academy Awards or other year end awards.
At the box office, it rked in seven point seven billion dollars worldwide.
It re emphasized the importance of summer blockbusters, and many experts have stated it's
say the fledgling DreamWorks studio at the time. After winning the Golden Globe for
Best Motion Picture Drama, it was nominated twelve Academy Awards. It won five,
including Best Picture in a Major Upset and Best Actor again for Crow.
It was nominated for others, including Best Director for Ridley Scott and Best Supporting
Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. In regards to epics, this film checks all the
boxes. Operatic esque soundtrack, on inspiring cinematography, mesmerizing performances, compelling story
and why spanning shots that blow the viewer away. This film is one of
the sand In Sandals epics that should be and must be joy by all.
I hope you join me next week when for our final review appear, and
in honor of Christmas, we will look at a young boy's quest to procure
a red rider go in nineteen or film a Christmas story of reminding kind of
ten. This has been possibilm your you are listening to wumin you come in,
don't get so greenly mad South. Welcome back everybody as we cruise into
our final segment this week on Matt Connorton Unleashed, we are live from the
studios of wm NH ninety five point three FM, inglorious Downtown Manchester New I'm
sure Jenny is here as well at the news desk presenton account of farm.
Yes yes, and by the way, so today on the show, of
course, first hour we had Tom Russo here, and then second hour into
a little bit of the third hour we had a dark rain joining us live
in studio, and then we had of course Eric Pilterri's classic film review.
Another great review this week of the the your two thousand film Gladiator starring Russell
Crowe. If you are wondering if you saw on social media we were supposed
to have another band coming in, Vices Inc. From Maine, about one
of the band members is sick, so they had to stay behind. They
will reschedule certainly. Although I was saying to Jenny off air, it kind
of worked out in a way because I had no idea. We actually we
talked about it on the way over, but I didn't realize just how far
dark Rain traveled to get here. So it was actually it worked out that,
you know, I mean, sorry we to not be able to have
Vices Inc. On the show today, but it did work out in one
sense because what I realized, but I realized how far dark Rain had traveled
to be here, you know, because we interview obviously, we interview a
lot of artists from the area, but we also interview artists from far away,
sometimes from other continents, but they usually skype in. So to have
dark Rain travel all that way to get here, it worked out that we
were able to at least spend a little bit more time with them, more
fun to have in studio. I look forward to them coming back. Yeah,
yeah, really, really great. So I enjoyed that quite a bit.
I do want to mention And we talked about this a little bit last
night too on Retrospectrum Radio with pol C, but I just wanted to acknowledge
it again today here on this show. For longtime listeners, whether you're a
regular listener of this program or the Morning Show with Peter White, you're probably
familiar with Shannon Shannon die On from right here in Manchester. She was a
very loyal listener. She called both shows on a regular basis. The other
other show here at the station that really takes live calls is Off the Mark
Sports with Kyle Heavy, But I don't think Shannon was a sports fan,
so she probably didn't call that show. But we found out, well,
it was a couple of days ago, a few days ago now Shannon passed
away. So I just wanted to say, you know, condolences to the
family and you know, any loved ones that she had in the area.
I don't I don't really know. I will miss hearing her voice, yeah,
will Yeah, I don't really know much about uh, you know,
who she had around here for for family and friends. But but yeah,
the thing that the thing that I always appreciated about Shannon was her sense of
humor. Was such that you know, she was willing to uh, you
know, let's let's be honest. Sometimes the calls could be a little strange,
but my sense of humor being what it is, I tended to want
to kind of lean into that and and make things even stranger. And we
had some very strange conversations on the air, Shannon and I did. But
you know, but I could kind of, you know, pick on her
a little bit and and take it in different directions. And she was always
willing to go for the ride, you know what I mean. She she
loved me, so she did, yes, oh, absolutely, no,
she had a but she had a really good sense of humor that way,
you know, And and you know we we pick on her, never with
malice, of course, always with affection, and uh, I think she
understood that and and she she had a really good sense of humor about it.
So so uh, the obituary online just said a sudden illness. So
don't don't really know any details beyond that, of course, but anyway,
I just wanted to acknowledge that and the passing of our friend Shannon. She
will be messed absolutely absolutely. We do have a little bit of time left
on today's show not much, but the studio line is open six oh three
two five oh sixho seven if you would like to join us six oh three
two five six oh seven. I'm sorry we're not on Facebook today. Facebook
is being glitchy. As far as I can tell, It's not not anything
internally here at the studio. Technology wise, it seems to be. I
think it's an issue with Facebook because Facebook is being Facebook and Facebook does glitch
on occasions, so we're not able to stream live on Facebook. But if
you're of course, you can listen to us on ninety five point three FM
locally in Manchester, and of course you can access us from anywhere in the
world online. I hope that Eric's listening. I want to say thank you
to your film review for last week for the Bronxtail. Yes, I watched
it and I really enjoyed it a lot, and I would not have done
so if not for the film review. So that's right, big shout out
thank you to Eric. Keep doing those reviews. We love them. And
there's actually been a number of different movies along the way that I've watched only
because of the review, absolutely being one of them. Bronxtail was definitely good.
Yes, yes, we have a call. Hi. Welcome to Matt
Connorton Unleashed. Who's this Hi Matt Gary. Hey Gary, you haven't heard
from you in a while. How are you doing? Yeah? I know
life, Yeah, all right, Yeah, I'm doing good. I just
you know, Hi, Jenny, my love, Hi sweetie. What are
you doing today? I'm relaxing. I clean my house and everything and I'll
go outside because it's beautiful and get some sun. Yeah it's yeah. I
just want to Yeah, I just want to say my condolences too to Shannon's
family. And you know, she was she was, she was fun to
listen to. Yeah, she kind of became a character, you know,
on the shows on both Oh yeah, she had a character on both in
the morning shows and rest her soul. Yeah, and you know, if
it was things you know, we do. There are people out there to
help you. And I think she just wanted to call in and have a
friend. Yeah, yeah, absolutely so. But yeah, but no,
things are going pretty good. I lost I lost ten more pounds, so
oh, good for you. Excellent and just yeah, I hadn't been able
to call for a while. I've been busy with other things. And and
then Uh, yeah, I figured out Saturdays. I said, well,
hey, i'll give Matt and Jenny Paul you know they'll be together. Yeah,
here we are. Ye. Yeah. Well, I just wanted to
wish you guys. Uh, Jenny, I've belated happy honka. Oh,
thank you, thank you very much. And yeah, and then just wish
you guys happy holidays and have you know, have some some good times and
uh, a brand new year next year with a new place to be at
and everything. I drove by there out with a friend of mine and it
looks really amazing with the big letters out there, and you know, and
looks like it's going to be really awesome there. Yeah, absolutely won't be
a secret studio anymore. That's right, That's right. No, I just
want to see how you guys are doing. And so yeah, I'm doing
pretty good, good, awesome, and yeah, I just I miss you
guys during the week, and but I get busy during the week now.
I try to do a lot of things and get myself prepared for the winter
because you know, we won't be able to do very much and just been
around and everything on. I did I did lose a I did lose a
friend Michelle to cancer this year, and it was kind of hard. Yeah,
she was my shoes. She was my neighbor from where I used to
live, and she we were real good friends. And I loved that lady
to death. She was so she was so great and sweet. But she's
in a far better place and no more hurting. No more hurting. She
h Yeah, she had. When I saw her, it ripped right through
her pancreatic cancer. I just ripped right through her. And I didn't want
to see I didn't want to see her the last day and I had called.
I kept calling for her, and her and her son called got her
phone number and said that she went into the hospital and but she died peacefully
with her family around her. And I said, well that was good.
And then I went to a celebration of life for her and we sat around
the table cried and said funny stories about her. So it was good.
And they even brought her corn She she loved playing corn hole, so they
brought her a cornhole. A lot accessories there and the and the kids would
play and everybody was you know, so it was it was a great celebration
of life, you know. And that's what I that's what I like you
know, to do you know, you go to funerals and everybody sits there.
Oh yeah, blah blah blah, and you gotta wear the big suits
and everything there. It was just totally awesome. It's just totally awesome and
it was great. But yeah, so Jenny, how are you doing.
I am good. I am doing very well, thank you. Feeling good?
Yes, I am upright, which is always good. Oh yeah,
I have Yeah, I have ups and downs. I have day he's your
body just doesn't want to work, and you know, but a little icy
hot, a little icy hot, and I'm on my way. All right,
Gary, All right, Well, I know you just don't have a
few minutes. But I just wanted to call in and say, you know,
I'm still here and you know, still listen to a lot of music
stuff and I like to listen to the people you got on there, so
but appreciate that. I just wanted to send my my condolences out to her
her family, and you know, things things get you know, you're you
just get overwhelmed and I can't understand sometimes but away from this stupid world and
and all the things. So but both of you, you know how much
I love you both, so a big, a big hug through the through
the phone and I have a great have a great holidays. Bye, thank
you Gary, bye bye. All right, very nice. Yeah, we
haven't heard from Gary in a long time, in a long time. If
you'd like to get in with a quick call, we do have a few
minutes left. Six O three two five six O seven is a studio line
six O three two five six seven. We did attend an event yesterday at
the Mosaic Art Collective above the Palace Theater about AI and very interesting a lot
of it talking about using chat, GPT and UH, which which I'm a
proponent of. You can do some cool things with it. And now what
was the part that they used to do pictures dot or dash. Oh there's
Dolly three, Dolly three, I can hold on to that one. I
was yeah, I was particularly well because you know, part of what a
big part of what the presentation was about was using AAR and AI in art
visual art, and I had used Dolly three recently uh on YouTube for when
I when I posted the uh I posted on YouTube. UH. The segment
that we did where we talked about the Daryl Hall versus John Oates lawsuit,
and I had actually used Dolly three and it was I talked about this a
little bit at the presentation when we were at the end and we were just
kind of chatting, and I said that, you know, I had asked
because there's there are some things you can ask it to do in terms of
creating visual images that it won't do. It'll it'll give you a hard time.
And I talked about how I tried to get it to create an image
of Daryl Hall versus John Oates in a boxing ring having a boxing match,
and the presenter of his name escapes me. Do you remember his name?
No, it was it was someone we hadn't met before. But he was
talking about how it seems like it doesn't it it's resistant to creating images of
celebrities and certain types of situations, like anything involving violence. Because I said,
yeah, the best I could do with it, I couldn't get it
to create an image of Hall and Oates boxing each other. The best I
could do was I got it to create an image of the two of them
at a chess board staring angrily at each other over a game of chess.
And that's that's really the best I could do, and that's the image if
you look at the thumbnail on YouTube, that's that's the best I could do
with it in terms of what I could get it to do. So you
know, it does have certain limitations, but it was a very interesting presentation.
Absolutely was actually if you go to the Mosaic Art Collective Facebook page,
the presentation has been posted up there so you can take a look at it.
He did an excellent job of really breaking down the different components and having
a really good conversation, Like we were talking about, you know, how
far, what should it be used, what is okay? And is still
art? What isn't okay? And do you consider it art if it's computer
generated but it's your designs. Like one of the things he talked about was
music, and that he fed the machine seventy seven songs that he had written
and then asked it to write a song with certain parameters in his style,
to which it did and he actually performed it for us and you can see
that there on the video which is on the Mosaic Our Collective's Facebook page,
which if you did didn't know that existed, I didn't either, Little alone
secret and it's absolutely awesome to go up there. They have incredible art pieces.
There's always something showing there, and there are some artists workshops in there
as well as that not workshops, they're studios, some artists have some studios.
Is located at sixty six Hanover Street, Suite two one, right here
in the Queen's City and you can see the Mosaic Artcollective dot com as well
for more information on them. But they have a lot of incredible pieces and
this presentation was definitely eye opening in that I don't know, It's like where,
how far will it go? And what is okay? What isn't okay?
Is it okay for an artist to use a computer or not, whether
it's an image or a writing, Yeah, it's questionable. And uh,
they're going to be here on January sixth, which actually will be our last
show in the studio before the big move. That's right for the big move.
Yeah, Liz and my friend Derek Smith, who's been booking the music
there, they're going to be coming in that day that which is awesome.
I really I like going there and I'm looking forward. I know they're going
to be having more stuff coming down the pike. We've we've gotten to go
there and see musicians, which was very enjoyable. It's like a small intimate
collective. It's like they call it collective. It's a small dress. One
of the things we talked about, though, was when my like me as
a writer, thinking, I don't want to have anything to do with this.
I don't want to go in where near it. I don't want anybody
to confuse it. You know, I want to do my own work.
But then, oh, but it's a great editor, right, so should
you use it for editing? Is it safe to put your work on there?
These are the kind of questions that started running through my mind, or
the other way around. You ask it to write stuff for you, and
then you edit it as a human. One of the podcasts that I listened
to that's been talking a lot about this is I don't know, if you
know, if you're familiar with Adam Conover. He's a podcaster. He's also
a stand up comedian. He also is a Hollywood writer. He's done a
lot of different things. But he was expressing the concern in an episode that
I was listening to about how you know because he's as a writer, he's
was part of that that whole strike and part of the concern among script writers
is, you know, is there going to come a point where just all
scripts are AI generated or and he's he didn't think that it'll come to that.
But what he is worried about, and what a lot of people are
worried about, is there there comes a point where a script is AI generated
and then a human a human writer takes that script and just punches it up
and kind of humanizing it, but isn't responsible for creating it from scratch.
And that will contribute to the devaluation of what writers are paid because you don't
need to hire you know, say you're you're going to be uh, you
know, you're developing a Hollywood film, you don't need to hire a writer
to write a script for that film. You just need to You can have
chat GPT generate an entire script and then give it to a writer who just
goes through, punches it up, kind of humanizes it. You know,
probably would have to punch up some of the dialogue. But so there are
a lot of concerns. What's interesting about Adam Conover's podcast though, to me
too, is he and some of the guests that he has on their main
concern is how does this affect art and people who make money with art.
But on the other end, they're very dismissive of some of the other concerns
because some of the concerns that people have about AI is, you know,
and we were kind of half joking about it at the presentation yesterday about AI
taking over and killing all the humans. And there's another guy, there's a
technology guy named Scott Galloway who works in this area and he's I've seen him
on Conover's podcast and some others, and you know, because some people are
sounding the alarm and some people like Galloway, his attitude about it is that's
he thinks that's completely absurd. He says, you know, in terms of
copyright and things like that, there are plenty of issues that need to be
sorted out. But he says, you know, AI systems are not going
to become sentient beings that decide to kill us all. He thinks that that's
science fiction stuff, and it's and it's crazy. But but there's a part
of what's interesting as we learn more about this is not only seeing how AI
continues to develop, but the range of opinions and what the concern like everybody
has concerns about it, but the concerns vary wildly among the people who are
studying this and and come to different conclusions about what the concerns should be.
So that is, uh is fascinating to me. But I thought, well,
yeah, I mean I worry about how do you tell the difference?
Right, how do you tell the difference between AI art and human art when
it gets better and better? Right? Does it? Does it replace?
Does it replace us? Right? I'm because when you look at AI.
Now we're talking about AI, but AI in general has already been projected it's
going to take over millions of jobs and you know in the future, and
like, I forget what there was a number I saw that. I can't
remember what it was. It was like what they thought was going to happen
to like twenty twenty five or something. But there's obviously going to be a
lot of jobs that are going to AI. But there's so you put that
there's like a category of things that could potentially or eventually be only done by
computer. Yeah, is that all of our writers can they invoke the emotion?
They can be pretty descriptive, right, I mean, we've played with
it a little yeah, oh yeah, And I mean I can't say that
it's not good because it is. Yeah, it is, But I worry
about see for me, there's an integrity thing there too. It's like,
I like the idea of being able to have an independent computer to edit my
work and not have to wait for somebody else or anything like that. But
on the other hand, if I let it touch my work, is it
still just mine? Right? Yeah, that's it. That's a natural concern
to have. I think absolutely well we are. We are just about out
of time. We gotta we got to wrap up. But another successful show,
and of course I will be back next week, which will be our
