And we've got a couple of guys with us here from a band who has

been on the show before. And I'm gonna get those get those mics up

for you guys, run like thieves is with us. Let me see here

we're still getting I'm still getting used to the new setup here. Yeah,

and go ahead, Dan Fallon is here, go ahead and say something now,

and Abe, I've got Abe set up on a mic that we don't

usually use, but it was convenient. And oh no, I do not

hear you say that again. Abe. Oh there we go. We found

you. I found you, thank you? Yes, yes, Abe Hughes

is here as well. And where so where's the running drummer? He's off

running his kids around to basketball games and such. Oh okay, that sounds

kind of important, I guess. I mean, I don't know. I

don't have any kids, so I don't know. Is that like something you

have to do not necessarily I don't have so you don't have to do it.

I don't know. I made the choice a long time. Well,

i'd say I made the choice. Hey, I made the choice when I

was like fourteen. I said I'm never having kids, and I stuck to

it. I'm just getting warmed up. I've got four I need some more.

Oh wow, I do you really have for Yeah? Yeah, but

my youngest is fourteen. Oh okay, and my oldest is a twenty nine,

twenty eighty eight, hold twenty eight. Yeah, I was twenty eight,

so yeah, our grandkid, grandson. I got a granddaughter coming.

Oh wow, bright, congratulations, thank you. But yes, but our

running drummer, that's a really good point. He's running his kids around.

If you, if anybody listening gets a chance to check out that, go

on YouTube and you can see his daughter, Athena's YouTube channel. It's bald

but Beautiful. She has alopecia. Oh wow, and she yeah, she

makes these great really great content. She actually just passed one hundred thousand subscribers

on YouTube. And it's really really fun stuff and interesting and and and just

you know the they're anti bullying too, so you can imagine what kids have

to go through. So it's it's all about that stuff. It's really really

fun, engaging for for people and kids, and it has a really good

message to it. But so it's bald but Beautiful Athena on YouTube. That's

Greg's daughter, one of the people that he's running around today. And for

people who don't know about alopecia, I know what it is because I had

a good friend who had it. But when you essentially you don't have any

hair right, including on top, So it's uh yeah, yeah, yeah,

yeah. I had a friend I haven't seen him in a long time

who had it. And he didn't have you know, no eyebrows, nothing,

just just it's it's really interesting and I can't remember though, is that

something you're born with or does that or does that happen do you know?

I don't really know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's great.

Want to have you guys back. When was the last time? Has it

been a year? No, it hasn't been a year, has it.

No, we came in I want to say December. Okay, it was

before well, it was obviously right after we finally became Run Like Thieves,

which was back in what October November? Wow, that feels like a long

time ago. Yeah, we've been doing a lot outside. Yeah, so

I want to say, like it was like December. I think it was

when we were on the show, because originally our show that's at the Banking

Newhampshire Stage wasn't going to be on January fifth, I believe it was in

it was it was it was rescheduled for single day, mayo, May fifth

coming up, and it was that's right. We wanted to come on and

promote and talk about some of the things we were doing, but it got

snowed out that day. Yep, yep, So we got the best day

of the year, I think, best Sunday of a year that you could

have a concert Sinco day mayo. Oh so it kind of worked out.

Yeah, it worked out in the end. Yeah. So we're back at

the banking New Hampshire stage in the Canoe in the Canton Room, and we're

back here at that. It's amazing. Yeah, yeah, no, it's

great. Great to have you guys back. By the way that I love

that song Teller Goodbye that we opened with. Uh, and I know you

guys are going to play a few live for us, by the way.

We're gonna play a song that we wrote. We've been writing more together,

which is really fun, and so I'll come up with like a dumb idea

and able to usually fix it. So this one's a little bit more interesting

because it started off like one way, like we went through kind of a

temporary like nickelback phase for like a couple of weeks, Like Dan was like,

hey, I want heavier guitars and stuff like that, and we're like

okay, and then it was kind of like not digging this. This is

just too butt rock. And then we still wanted to like rework the tunes

because I don't think the songs are bad. So Dan said, okay,

let's do this one more of a blues style. And then my head like

I just heard like a descending bassline and we kind of turned it into that.

So has a little bit more of like a feeling good or a portoishead

glory Box kind of sound to it. Yeah. Cool. It sounds almost

a little psychedelic when we get to do it together with all the effects and

the band, and it's really I think it might be one of our better

tracks all overall. It seems to be very getting warmly received at live performances.

Cool, okay, and uh we even had a We had a DJ

actually at the last show that we played, and he said I would love

to hear that for an hour, and I was like, you know what,

I would love to play that for now. So you're not gonna get

that right now, though, Matt, because we're playing an acoustic but we'll

do the best we can. So, Okay, before you guys rip into

a two, Dan, can you just strum strum a little for me?

I just want to make sure that we can Yeah that okay, that sounds

nice. And uh, Abe can you do the same. I want to

make sure we got your h your base in the mix. Let's see here,

Oh there we go. Cool, all right. I'll have to kind

of ride the faders as we go because we're live, but we can hear

everybody, so that's uh, that's most of the battle, all right.

Live in studio two thirds of the band. Anyway, Daniel, we were

talking about off air earlier. You were talking about what happened at the Is

it the New England Music Awards. Yes, we we just well it's the

Battle of the Bands for the New England Music Oh okay, gotcha, Battle

of the band's last band standing New England Music Awards. We just played last

week and it was an interesting thing. You know, we we don't really

do battles to the bands. Yeah, but so it was the first one,

and I don't know that was the first one I did in the last

couple of years. I did one for them a couple of years ago.

Don't know when was the last time we did a battle of the bands.

Last time I did one was with I think East is East back in twenty

thirteen for the f Nice Records. Yeah, but it was that was like

another Boston thing, and that one we did, we made it up to

like fourth place. Eventually we got to play at the Middle East, which

was nice, but we made it fourth place out of four bands. That's

past Saturday, so but we Yeah, it was it was at the Zorba

Music Hall and lowl It was kind of cool, actually nice place, and

you know, it was well done event. All the New England music events.

They're actually going to be in Plymouth soon at at the Edge of the

World Tavern, I think for the last yeo. I'm not sure what day

it is, okay, but yeah, during the set, my guitar went

out within the first kind of minute and that's when I realized how much water

I drank that day, because it all sweated entirely and it must have caused

some type of electrical circuit error on the ground because not only did that the

guitar went out, next thing, you know, the MIC's out and in

the monitor was out for for greg Ard drummer, so he was just kind

of winging it the rest of the gig. He didn't have any monitor.

The only the only thing that actually he could hear was my vocals, poor

guy, and he could near the bass, so that was tricky. But

he really did a really great job. But it was It was a nice

event. The Gray Curtain is the one that won the night and they I

think they deserved it. It was such a unique act. Yeah, amazing

vocals and in a true performance, a true performance, it was very theatrical,

the way the the singer kind of held it down. The band was

amazing. All the bands were great, though, Big Sun Band, there's

some other bands they were. They really were great. The first band was

like a seventies I think it was one of the best battle of the bands

I've ever been to. Really. Yeah, everyone there was top of their

game. Yeah, excellent. Do you remember the first band had a gone

yes, trying to remember the names like led Zeppelin or something like. Yeah,

they were. There were definitely like a throwback kind of band, like

a led Zeppelin Albon Brothers trio thing going on. But it was. It's

nice and I love that the organization because they the New England Music Awards.

They do all kinds of stuff. They have great events, but they you

know, the publicity that they try to help you with is it really gets

your name out there. And when I had started playing out again doing original

stuff, that's the first place that said, hey, we got a gig

for you that type of thing if you want to participate. Oh wow.

Yeah. So John Fleming, Lindsey Vaughn, the people that run a really

great people and it yeah nice. Nice the opportunity to network with other musicians

and things like that. Yeah, it's It's interesting though too. It's interesting

to be around the other bands at those type of events because I feel like

we're the most senior. I think I'm the only granddad. Yeah, yeah,

yeah, Well it was also good because it's nice, nice to see

what the younger kids are doing. Yeah, I can say younger kids now

too, I'm hurtle as Henry Rollins would say, I'm hurtling towards forty.

But yeah, so, and what was weird was still doing a lot of

the same stuff. There was basically metal bands, there was weird art bands,

and there was punkin reggae bands. Good to see. Yeah, so,

like I didn't hear anything like I was hoping to hear like one band

that just like did something completely new and amazing and awesome, which I didn't

see. But like I said, everyone there was top their game. They

weren't slouches. All of them came and prepared. They were really talented musicians.

A lot of the battle bands or even just you know, when I

was doing regular shows, there was usually like one or two bands that you

could just tell, like the bass player is just the guy from the local

gas station that they taught like three notes too, and he doesn't care about

like progressing any He just like, I just need to know the root notes.

That's it. And none of the bands were like that. Everyone seemed

to, you know, really care and that's it's good to see like the

younger crowd still going out there and doing that and being into it. Yeah,

so rock and roll isn't isn't going anywhere. It's where it is.

You know, you get that feeling every now and then, especially going out

a lot, you kind of wonder, like, WHOA, what's happening right

the music? But it was it was I was really just like abes that

I was really happy to see the level of professionalism and young young just really

excellent musicians top of the game. I thought a bunch of them were they

could have been hired studio musicians. Yeah, these kids, Yeah, they

were really really great. But it's fun to it's just fun to do that

stuff and to run into people and then make contacts and you know, you

make you know, ten friends that day and then they're you know, they

already reached out. A bunch of them reached out you know, for other

for things, to collab or to do a show with them. We want

to do a show with us, make sure you know whatever you know?

Yeah, yeah, but are we a little old for you know what?

Oh yeah, that's that is one of our singer that was singing with us

for a lot of the cover gigs was twenty one or something, and uh

and she's great and she was really great. But I definitely got that feeling,

like, especially like the song selection, like I don't feel old,

and you don't feel old, and we do anything, We'll play anything.

But at the same time, you know, maybe like not knowing led Zeppelin

right right, kind of weird. You're like, oh god, David Bowie,

you know what journey you have to cover? You know that song that's

in that movie? Oh that's y Yeah, you know it's kind of you

know so, uh yeah, it's kind of weird, you know, but

it's good to I don't think I'm never gonna I don't I'm never gonna stop.

Yeah, I am old. I got like I'm sitting here with my

knees all messed up from trying to jog. That's a bad idea. Jogging's

a bad idea. I don't care what anybody says. It's dangerous for your

health. Does your drummer know this. He runs, he doesn't jog.

Yeah, he's okay. I was gonna say, you're gonna have an intervention

with him. He does like a five minute miles like a lot of the

times he'll do in for like these distances, he'll do like five six minute

miles. Yeh, I'm on a sixteen minute mile, right, yeah,

them lucky. Well, what's the rush exactly? You know, enjoy enjoy

the treadmill exactly, you know exactly. Yeah. Yeah. And this week

I stopped drinking alcoholic just just yeah, just just just to see what would

happen. But yeah, boy, do you notice a change already? Wow?

The sleep is a lot better. Good. And and I I'm a

lot worse than I realized when I'm performing it was much you know, it's

like you're much more aware. Yeah, but you know it's it's you know,

it's everything else. It's time in its place just right now, it's

just time to stop, you know. Good for you. Yeah, trying

to trying to bolster some kind of self awareness in those instances. And it's

very interesting. Yeah, but after a few days, the first one was

rough, really yeah, and everybody wants to buy drinks like, hey,

you want want some, you know. And then second one was a little

bit easier. And thanks to my boys over here too, because they totally

awesomely sort of and in u but yeah, but you know, I didn't

realize it was gonna be that, no kidding, no kidding. And then

people are buying you drinks and then you just you know, I appreciate it.

I noticed. Wait, staff doesn't say that guy isn't drinking anything.

They say what they the people, I want to buy him a marguerite or

something, or buy him a shot, and they always they always add to

the until like you know, you see like a couple of beverages at the

table that are supposed to be for me, but I'm not drinking them,

you know, And yeah they just added to somebody's check. Yeah, yeah,

exactly, so that but you know, no, good for you though,

that's awesome. It's hard, isn't it hard? Yeah? Next thing

is ice cream. I'm gonna try to give that up at some point,

so we'll see what happens. It'll be tricky. It's always good to give

stuff up, replace it with something else, you know, more interesting,

give it a shot. That's what when I do. Uh, I don't

know if you know this about me, I'm a hypnotherapist. Yes, and

and one of the things that we try to do in a session is replaced

what the bad habit is, which is usually smoking. That's what I that's

the clients I get the most is people want to quit smoking. But we

try to always replace something bad with something good. So that way, it's

not like you're giving something up, you're just replacing it with something else.

Just the something else happens to be something positive for you. You know,

like you're not smoking anymore. Instead you're eating celery and carrots, and you

know what do you what do you think you could do for like sugar?

Oh yeah, that's stuff's easy. Yeah. And anything that's habitual, you

know, like whether it's smoking or eating junk food or anything like that,

that's that's easy to U attack with hypnosis. Yeah, that'd be interesting.

I'd love to, you know, sit with you. Maybe we'll talk after,

I'll after the show. We could figure out something. I'd love to

give it a shot. Yeah. Yeah, it's very difficult for me for

some reason. I don't I just love food. Yeah, No, I

hear you, I hear you. Yeah, we should uh hear the doorbell

ring. It's funny, all right, well it is. Uh, it's

Have you been up there yet? It's beautiful. I have, believe it

or not. I haven't actually been in there. It's really nice, really

yeah, and uh, it's gonna be very kind of stripped down kind of

band set for us. We are rocking, like even though we're so freaking

old, we're jumping around. We definitely feel it. I was asking at

one of those I was like, did you feel like because we were jumping,

Yeah, a very you know, physical and me too, but and

uh, I was feeling it. But this one's very gonna be stripped down

and we're gonna be kind to be able to interact with people. It's an

early show, which is really nice too. So you know, we started,

we'll probably start right at six six fifteen, and it'll be over early

so people can kind of go home or they can go out and enjoy the

rest of the night. But it's gonna be really fun get to know the

band a little bit more in a in a in a relaxed kind of environment.

Yeah, there's a lot of coaches and all the shows that I've seen

people sit this close to the whole band. Yeah, it's really really nice.

Yeah, a nice little, nice little bar. Maybe I'll have a

drink that night. I'll see how you know you're good? But this song

is Tennessee and uh, just wrote it and it has some meaning to us.

But we were the like I came with this idea and then it was

kind of crazy, and Abe and and Greg were like, actually, let's

let's bring this down to a place where it's it's, uh, what kind

of approachable. I didn't. I don't know. It kind of had this

kind of wacky kind of thing going for it, and and it's it's it's

been kind of well received. Actually I sent it to a just because of

the name is Tennessee. I sent it to a Tennessee tourism uh company,

see, and they wound up using it. Really was really cool. Yeah,

yeah, that's awesome, very very cool. But hopefully this is the

I detuned this guitar to mimic the seventh string, no kidding. Okay,

well, well this will be a this is an acoustic first for this journey.

All right. I think I'm in the right tuning, I hope.

So we'll see. We'll see what happens if the guitar drops out. Don't

about doing all the doing all the shows, you know, and okay,

a little bit of a nerdy question, but playing with a slide on your

pinky like that? Is it difficult to because I'm watching you solo. Does

the slide ever get in the way when you're soloing like you do? It

does? Okay, Yeah, it's it's it's don't try this at home,

but try it at home a lot before you Yeah, yeah, yeah,

and this is it was Abe actually was suggested we did the song this morning,

and I would I would use maybe a brass a thinner slide for this

guitar, So so many different considerations. Yeah, but this is the one

that I had with me, so I was like, you know, we're

going to do it with this one to be Yeah, but yeah, actually

a lot of the gigs, I'll bring the lap steal too, So okay,

to make it a little bit more, just give it a little of

that kind of swaggy blues edge and sometimes it's just it's just a couple of

notes with the slide just adds so much to it. Yeah, it's also

well, I mean, I'm sorry if your MIC's down a little bit.

There we go. And it's also you know, you want to make sure

that the audience always has like something they don't normally see, right, So

like having little things for production value, having you know, a slide,

that slide guitar that's in front of you that adds a different texture to something,

just visually gives you something on the stage. Little things like letting that

makes a big difference when people go out, I mean, like their time

is precious. You want to make sure that they're seeing something they don't normally

see or you know, definitely make sure that like you show them that you

put time into it and stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.

Yeah. Yeah. It's a lot of fun too. So it's just it's

fun to you know, have that interaction and and then people talking what's going

on over there right right? You know. But it's a great question though,

and the lap still you use a different type of slide. There's a

couple that I have yeah, depending on but they they are really interesting.

Like the hand position. You can actually do bends if you practice a lot

where I don't have the pedals, like I'll try to mimic what a pedal

steel does. Oh okay, and it just sounds so cool. It's like,

oh, it sounds really really good. Yeah. I've got a dough

bro for like the acoustic stuff too. Yeah, and that's something that's really

fun. So they translate really well. But there's definitely different, different technique.

This guitar is a little low for slide too, so it definitely bangs

into stuff. So yeah, yeah, this the other the other different depending

on what we're doing. I'll you know, use a different guitar for it

that has a little bit of a raised area and it just sings a little

bit better. Yeah slide so okay, Yeah, it's fun. Yeah,

Hampshire So the New Hampshire Music Collective, John MacArthur, Revertangle, Brad Merrick

are the ones that book this uh gig in promoting the gig, the Bank

of Hampshire Stage gig on May fifth, and many others many they're just amazing,

amazing, the New Hampshire Music Collective, amazing people to work with,

excellent and professionals. And they they have put another event together. It is

kind of a solo thing, but but it's at the studio in Portland,

Okay, and and they're doing some very high production video and audio. So

I'm gonna do I'm gonna do a couple of our our songs and and another

something I don't know. I don't know what I'll do. I get to

think of something, you know, just to kind of keep it going.

But as a band, not not just yet. We're kind of in that

stage where we're kind of redefining where we want to go. And it's it's

it's tricky because we do a lot of gigs and we'll do like a lot

of cover gigs and and things, and but it's coming, it's coming together.

I don't know. Like the last couple of directions, especially with like

that you put us in a it sounds really real. It's interesting, you

know, and uh, it's it can be confusing, like which way do

you want to go? Right? And like I was, I was thinking

we're going to be new metal for for a day. There where gonna be

yeah, yeah, Nickelback, you know, and the and then more country.

I do love the kind of country. I love the Americ kind of

stuff a lot. I really I really take it, you know. But

uh, you know, that's so it's interesting to see where you're gonna go

with a bunch of different people so much it's so enriching. It's it's challenging

too to work with people, especially like you know, if I'm kind of

just off doing my own thing, it's kind of it can be challenging because

you have to you you you constantly humbled because reality is it's better this way

or that way, and and uh, it's it's like, oh wow,

that's interesting. So you learn to trust the guys that you're with, which

is really great. It's great to be able to and they know they have

to they have to help help the I'll go off on it different without even

realizing it, right right, I'll I'll be singing like in a British accent

or something. I don't know if I freaked you guys out, I'm probably

I can't freak them out now. But when we did a bunch of Saint

Patrick's Day gigs, I'm like, like, we get booked early for Saint

Patty's. Oh, but we go I go hard with the Saint Patty's stuff.

You know. Yeah, sounds like I'm going to my Dublin roots there,

you know, right right, Yeah, that's cool, that's cool.
