contact info, show archives, etc. Etc. Today is a Friday,
Happy Friday, May twelve, twenty twenty three. So uh, and it
is. It's pretty warm out. It was like eighty degrees when I came
in. I like it. I like the heat. I like it hot.
You know, some like it hot in some sweat when the heat is
on. But no, it's uh, this is my time of year.
Um, and I'm a little more um. I like it better when it's
eighty degrees in the middle of May than I do when it's ninety degrees in
the middle of April. Something about ninety degrees in the middle of April.
If you remember, we had a couple of days like that in April.
That's a little alarming. Eighty degrees in the middle of May just seems more
like a normal early ish summer. Uh So that's uh, that's fine,
that's fine, I'll take it. And then you know, by June,
if it gets to be ninety, that's fine, that's all on schedule.
But when it's ninety in the middle of April, I'm going, yeah,
that's not supposed to happen, and yet it seems to happen more and more.
But I don't want to get sidetracked. It is, of course Friday
here, it's my long day at WMNH, and I do love it,
so it's my favorite day of the week. I do this show. Of
course, I'm here four to six, and then from six to seven we
have granted State of Mind hosted by the Great rob as A Veto and Pauly
Stone, and then I am back at eight pm eight to eleven PM for
Retro Spectrum Radio with Pauly C. I have the honor and privilege of being
one of Paul's co hosts on that show, along with DJ Steve and Mike
from Queen City Cabinetry, who I believe is making us triumphant return this week.
Hopefully he's had a lot to deal with, that's for sure. So
you know, if he's not there for any reason, obviously everyone will understand.
But but hopefully I get to see him tonight Queen City Cabinetry, of
course in the historic Sunbeam. Mall and Mike our friend from Queen City Cabinetry
not only a sponsor here at WMH ninety five point three, but like I
said, he's our newest co host on retro Spectrum Radio with Paulic, so
we look forward to that. Speaking of Friday, you know I love Fridays.
Joe Friday is in the chat room and says it's Joe Friday here.
Yes, Yes, Friday abounds. Remember that song Friday what was her name,
Rebecca something? Friday, Friday, No, no Friday. I thought
about playing that on the show. If I were to do so, of
course, it would not be out of a legitimate enjoyment of the song,
because the song is horrible. It would be more ironically the problem with that
is that song and all the the attention that it got that had to be
at least ten years ago, at least maybe maybe twelve years ago. So
to do so ironically in the year twenty twenty three wouldn't really work. I'm
afraid the irony would be lost. So we shan't we shan't bother. But
but we can think about it and we can all hum it. We can
hum it together. I don't I don't know the words other than Friday,
Friday, Friday. Uh. Let's see so today on the show, so
are we did have a guest schedule, but apparently he's still not feeling well,
Chris Connor, so we'll have him on soon. I'm sure I'm looking
forward to uh speaking with him, so I hope he feels better. Jenny's
gonna be calling in at any moment. She's going to fill us in on
what she's got going on next week. Tuesday of next week, Jenny is
going to Washington, d C. And uh she's going to be uh speaking
on a panel and with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont about healthcare. I'll let
her explain it, and she'll be here in studio Monday to talk more about
it too. But she's gonna be calling it. And then, of course
later in the show, because it is Friday, in the five o'clock hour,
we will have Eric Pilcher's classic film review, a very popular segment here
on the program. Eric does a great job with those, and this week
the subject is the two thousand and one film starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawk,
Training Day, which is a personal favorite of mine. So I love
that movie, and I really enjoyed Eric's review. Obviously I listen to them
ahead of time, and so I will be sharing that with you today at
five pm. But Jenny is on the line, Hello and bow fine Friday.
Yes, yes, I went to bed and I woke up in summer.
Yeah, yeah, I think it's yeah, go ahead. Uh no,
I just gonna It's supposed to say this way throughout the weekend, isn't
it. I think so. I think I thought a possibility of like ninety
this weekend. Oh that's right, Yes, yes, I think on Sunday.
Wow, excellent, not looking forward with I like seventy. Yeah,
well seven seventy is like the perfect temp. Yes, so yeah, tell
everybody what you're going to be doing. Yeah, so I was going to
sell Matt on the market. No wait, that's the other day. That's
illegal. I cannot be sold like a like a piece of meat. How
dare you? All right? I feel like I've been objectively. Yeah,
I'm super excited about this. It's a heck of an opportunity. And when
I was asked if I would do it, I was absolutely on board.
As you guys all know, everybody knows, I'm always on air talking for
years now about healthcare and healthcare we should have versus what we get, especially
because of these insurance companies and what they do to interfere. So there is
a bill being introduced in Congress in the Senate by Senator Sanders. It is
Medicare for All, and what it would do is literally get rid of insurance
companies. Let our doctors do what doctors do and what they order, and
what you need you get and we can start with the Medicare system. Because
you knows already there and have a national healthcare Why in the world do we
accept the way that we live. I mean, it's kind of mind boggling
when you think about it. These bureaucrats have Cadillac insurance policies. They never
look at something getting turned down, you know, and these insurance companies could
care less about us. I mean recently, well recently, as you guys
know, I've had a national campaign going I've had help from organizations like People's
Action and New Hampshire Rights in Democracy and we've gone to bat and they've really
fought for me to get more coverage that I should have to my insurance company,
Like you know my infusions that are six hundred dollars a month. You
guys all know about the infusions, and you know the insurance company wouldn't cover
it, wouldn't cover it. On and on and on we do this national
campaign and you know what my next infusion, which is scheduled for July is
as of right now, prior authorization has been approved for that infusion thanks to
these people. Yeah, these same people, of course, are backing this
effort to have a national healthcare policy that allows everybody, no matter who you
are, where you come from, if you need something medical, you get
it. We should we should shout out you mentioned Rights and Democracy. Heather
Stockwell, who's been on the show a few times now. She's the one
who helped with this initially, right and got you involved in all of this
this applican literally yeah, literally, she's she's literally person zero that started this
entire thing. And it's actually because our sponsor, the hop Knot was having
an event about healthcare, and they've supported my efforts and always you know,
they support the show, they support the station, they've always supported my efforts
in my advocacy for better patient care. And he called Kenny Message doing and
said, jeez, you know this lady's coming in at Heather and she's doing
this thing. It's about healthcare and access to healthcare. Would you be willing
to come in? I think that you could add to it? So it's
true. So I stewed up and Heather was absolutely phenomenal, and there was
Ryan as from people's action was there. I think he's originally I think he
lives in like Minnesota. He had come into New Hampshire for this special event.
And you know, one of the things that came out of the conversations
with them was that it's hard to get anybody to be that guinea pig,
to be the person that's willing to be open about their medical and let other
people publicly help them try and basically shame these insurance companies into doing what they're
supposed to do. I mean, let me, I want to share this
with you through this process. One of the other things we were looking for
was assistance with one of my medications that I take in a pill form,
and they put in I'm talking to this girl to put in this appeal to
try and get them to drop the medication tier down just one, right,
just one, because this drug is eighty five dollars through them. If I
use GoodRx at a grocery store, I can get it down to forty eight
dollars. But the insurance actually admonished me, you know, about using good
RX because that money doesn't count towards your deductible, which frankly is disgusting.
Right, So what I'm asking these people to do is literally give me permission
that they drop the drug from a tier four to a tier three, would
make it forty seven dollars, and I would get it through the planed pharmacy
and my money would count towards my deductible. I can show you so many
denials for this. They won't do it. They won't do it for any
reason. I have tried and tried and tried. You put in a request
to try and get them to do something, and I'm on the phone with
the woman helping me. No sooner did she hit enter. Did I immediately
get an email of denial? So somebody human looked at that computer, thought
from keyword and denied, and she's like, oh, I knew that was
going to happen, So then she's trying to find a way to get to
a human being. This is disgusting and what the heck are they doing for
my benefit? You know what really grossed me out is, you know,
here we are, we talked about this stuff all the time on the show.
We talked about all the We've talked about our friend who has trouble getting
her insulin, you know, and all these troubles that we've had health wise.
It's Oh, my gosh, I'm sorry. My brain just went um,
my brain just just got a moment. Oh gosh, I'm sorry,
Matt. That's okay. I'm having one of those foggy head moments. This
is a part of what's wrong with me. It's which is kind of sucky.
You know, I'm in a good place and trying to tell you guys
something, and yeah, that happens. They refused to drop the tier on
that drug, so I'm stuck paying the forty eight dollars with the good RX
that they admonished me for using. Or I hate cow I cow tailed to
what they're saying, and I start paying eighty five dollars because that's what they're
asking me to do. Right, right, of course you should use good
RX. Well, what I wanted to say that I slipped my brain and
has just come back, is that it really grossed me out because they announced
just a few weeks ago they're forced quarter profits, and they made eight point
one billion dollars with a B in three months. Three months. I thought
it was a year when I heard that number. Oh no, that's three
months. And now they made that profit. They made that profit off to
the dead and dying and denying care and denying services, you know, and
like, if I wasn't doing all the things that I do to stay alive,
I wouldn't be I would be gone by now, or I wouldn't be
in some kind of facility unable to have any kind of quality of life.
I go without treatment, and within months I'm bedbound, and probably within a
year I'm now stuck permanently being rolled around by somebody else, probably because I
wouldn't be able to do anything, or i'd be dead, I mean quite
frankly, but it's just it's horrendous, and the only we were going to
stop this nightmare is to get rid of them. There's just nothing else you
can do. I thought there was some way of fixing it at one point
in my life, but it's not. Just got to get rid of them.
We should be able to have a national healthcare system. You got a
USA Healthcare Card, and you decide on where you go based on how they
treat you. You're not picking a provider by price. You're picking a provider
by their quality of their care, the politeness of their staff, their bedside
manner. You're making that kind of a healthcare choice. So our healthcare system
is actually incentivized to be even better. We should be investing in the fact
that we don't. We need more doctors, we need more nurses, we
need more medical people, and we should be doing more education wise in order
to get those positions filled. Because I got news for you. You know,
when you and I are into our eighties or so, we're gonna be
hard pressed to find a neurologist. We're gonna be hard pressed to find a
lot of these specialists as cardiologists, some of the cardiology specialists, because there's
not enough of them going into the field to take the place. So we
better start investing if we invest in our own country, and we have a
healthcare system that says you have the right to walk into a hospital and get
care with this USA Health card, and we use the Medicare system that we
already have in place, and I believe we can do a lot to it
to make it way better. And then that's who pays the bills. That's
how that works. You pay one yeah, yeah, Well, you know,
as we've talked about on the show many times, it took me a
while to finally get to a position of saying I think we should have socialized
medicine. It took me a long time to get there. I've always felt
that every American should have access to adequate or preferably better than adequate healthcare.
And there's no excuse in the as I like to say, in the most
successful, most innovative, and most prosperous country in the history of the world,
that so many people fall through the cracks. It doesn't make any sense.
But I think I finally figured out psychologically what happens and sort of a
I'm speaking in a macro sense, the mass psychology of it. Why Americans
accept it the way that it is. It's because I I think back to
my own experience, you know, knock on wood. I've always been pretty
healthy and uh but when I you know, before I was self employed,
when I had a regular job where my health insurance was provided for by the
company that I worked for, you know, it was you don't you don't
you kind of take it for granted. It's like Elizabeth Warren. I don't
give her credit for a lot, but I remember something she said during one
of the twenty twenty debates. She said, you know, everyone says,
but I like my health, my healthcare. I like my health insurance the
way it is. I don't want to change it. I like it the
way it is. And she said everyone likes their health insurance until they actually
have to use it, you know, and then when something, you know,
when something catastrophic happens, and you start getting these denials, and you
realize that the insurance company would actually rather you die because now you're costing them
money instead of contributing money. Uh. You know, then then all of
a sudden, you're health insurance that you thought you loved so much doesn't seem
so great. But I think I finally figured out the mass psychology of this
and why people accept it the way that it is, because I used to
think it was just because, well, you know, we're a capitalist,
you know, and hey, I'm a capitalist, you know, I'm a
free market capitalist. But obviously with certain exceptions, health healthcare being one of
them at this point. But but I used to think that was the reason.
But then I realized, no, I think what it is is when
you're young and you're working for a company that gives you a health insurance.
I mean, well, they don't give it to you. It's taken out
of your paycheck effectively. But but but where that health insurance is provided for
you? And I think back to my time when I was in that position,
and if I did have to go to the doctor, you know,
I was generally pretty healthy. But if I did have to go to the
doctor, you know, I would go to the doctor. I would pay
the co pay, usually not much, ten fifteen twenty bucks at most,
right, and that was it. I'd never even see a bill. I
just I'd cover the co pay and that was in And then you don't forget
about it. So you kind of get lulled into that, into into you
get used to the idea that that's just how it is. You have health
insurance, you just go, you deal with the copay, you never see
a bill, it's easy whatever. And then, uh, you don't realize
that. You know, first of all, as you get older, more
things are gonna go wrong. That's just how it works. And yeah,
and then you're gonna you're gonna have to actually start using your health insurance in
ways that you didn't have to before. And I remembered something recently. I
didn't tell you this, but it was just a memory that I had from
back when I worked for that company and I had that great health insurance.
I was having a conversation with another employee, a manager from another location,
and we were talking about the health insurance that we had through the company,
and uh, I was. I had said something about, yeah, I'm
glad we have really good insurance here, and uh my friend uh said to
me, well, actually, you know, I used to think so too,
but his wife was on his policy and she said, uh, I'm
sorry, he said. My wife, Laurie and I were fighting with the
insurance company, you know, because she had surgery recently and it was it
was not elective. It had to be done and now they're trying to weazzle
out of pain for it, and they're coming up with excuses not to pay
for the insurance, not to pay for the surgery, so that we get
stuck with the bill. And I filed that away somewhere in the back of
my mind because that specific memory, it didn't even occur to me until just
recently, but I was thinking about it. I was like, yeah,
that's interesting. So back then, there I am, you know, young,
healthy, you know, if I had to go to the doctor,
I paid the co pay whatever, and that's it. But here's here's my
friend who also works for the company, whose wife just had jury, and
they're having a fight with the same insurance company that I think is so great.
And when I when I finally access that memory, when it occurred to
me the other day, I was like, oh, I didn't even know
at the time. You know, hindsight is twenty twenty. But I was
catching a glimpse of of it how it really works. But when you're young
and you have a regular job that you know, you just sign up for
the insurance and then you don't really have to think about it much. I
think as a society, we all get conditioned to just thinking that's how it
works, that's how it's always going to be, until the day comes that
the reality of how it really works in this country comes and slaps you in
the face. Well, you know what I say, you're one cancer diagnosis
away from being me. Yeah, and I mean that. I mean I
was fully functioning EMT. I ran an ambulance, I worked in an er,
I ran, I could physically run. Know, my doctor didn't like
my coffee intake and wanted me to be better about my vitamins. That was
the worst thing that right, And then one day you've got cancer, and
then cancer surgery didn't go right, and now you lost your job, and
now you lost your healthcare, you know, And it's it's it is exactly
that you are one hundred percent correct. And she was one hundred percent correct
when she said it. It's great until you need it, you know.
And now here I am, and I'm stuck with a meticare disadvantage plan,
and it's awful. There's so much they won't cover, Like they won't cover
compression socks unless you have an all Star. They won't let you wear them
to prevent one. But they'll cover it if you get one, and that's
basically to cover the bandage, not because you should have proper compression so you
have better blood flow so you don't have problems to begin with. You know,
it's it's disgusting how much they nickel and dime every one of us,
scream every single penny they can squeeze out of us, and when it comes
time to give it back to us, what we've paid in, what we
you know what we've purchased this insurance we've purchased. Oh no, you know
what my insurance company, United Health likes to do is they'll say, not
approved by the FDA for the treatment of CRPS, complex regional pain syndrome.
But here's the kicker. The disease was discovered over two hundred years ago and
the FDA has yet to improve as single treatment for CRPS, so they get
to use that as an excuse. Wow, you know, it's not approved
by the FDA, so we're not going to cover it. Nobody's been,
They've never approved anything. If I'm waiting for these guys to get off of
their butts, I'm going to be old dead and turned into dust before they
get around to approving anything for CRPS. We need this bill to happen.
We need we as Americans need to dislike tell the politicians, I don't give
a care of what. Let us after your name. I'm done with you
people. We need a national healthcare system and you're going to be the first
people on it. Yeah, and it would it would actually, uh,
it'd be good for the be good for the country. You know, the
country as a whole would be better if the people living in it are are
just generally healthier. And as far as cost, you know, uh,
people get wrapped up in well, won't you have to raise taxes and our
taxes we'll have to pay for it. Well, I'll tell you what.
If you're if your employer doesn't have to shell out the money for health insurance
anymore, then you're either going to have a whole lot more money in your
paycheck or you know, or maybe less, but you know, they're not
having to pay for it anymore. Um. And don't don't forget though,
if the premium goes up a little bit, So what you're getting rid of
all the co pays? Yeah, you're getting rid of the forty all is
every time I walk into my doctor's office, forty dollars every time I,
you know, need a prescription filled whatever it is. If I need to,
oh, I'm in my coinsurance part, so I get to pay two
hundred dollars of this MRI. You know, you don't get hit with that
anymore. My mom is stuck in Massachusetts with Romney Care, and she got
handed the entire MRI bill because the way their insurance works is you have to
satisfy the full deductible first, so you get all of the bill, all
up front, all when you're in the middle of trying to not lose your
job and get your care that you need. And yeah, and that's what
you're facing. And that's what you're facing, though any increase in premium will
be worth it. When I was in the Netherlands, these guys pay one
premium and I know one of my friends, I think it was like one
hundred and fifty bucks or something like that. Granted their country is a little
smaller, so even if it's two hundred whatever, it was all of your
medical, all of your dental, and third party insurance. Because over there
everybody rides a bicycle. You have to have personal insurance, so if you
run into somebody, you can get you're responsible for the damage, so you
make a one payment and that's your insurance all around. That is your full
coverage, and they require everybody to have it, including when you come into
the country. You're not supposed to be traveling in there unless you have travelers
insurance, which you should be doing anyway. I mean I always did,
but you're required under their law if you're going to travel to their country legally,
you have to come in with full coverage insurance. Yeah. Ah,
I don't know. That sounds like communism. I watch my buddy. My
buddy has stage four breast cancer. He's a male breast cancer patient, one
out of every hundred breast cancers or male. He lives in the Netherlands.
The doctor has come to his house many times. Wow. They had to
put in a drain into his lung. They had people coming to the house
morning and night to help him do everything. He needed something, they got
it. They doctor wanted him on cannabis. He ordered a cannabis infused water
for him. Like every medication he needed, it's ordered from the pharmacy.
The pharmacy delivers that. You are not having to mucket up, you're not
having a warry it, you know it, Oh geez, how much is
it gonna be for this frigging mad you know. I mean I've walked in
and gotten sick of shock, and you know, you get up to the
counter and it's like, oh, this med's two hundred and fifty dollars now
part of your deductible. That happened to me once. I just I walked
out of the pharmacy crying. I was like, I can't believe I just
had to spend that. But I'd never a choice. It was, there
was no choice. What are you gonna do? You can't say no,
you need, you need what you need in order to live. We should
I'm tired of it. Every how, many people in America are medically poor,
Like they'd be fine if they didn't have such incredibly high medical bills,
right, but they're poor because the medical So you know, if anybody in
America should be, we should be. I mean, we have the best,
We have some of the arguably best medical care in the world. People
come from other countries to get care here because we have some of the best.
But the American who's living next door to the house next to CMC is
gonna die. That could have lived or could have had a better life if
they'd only been given access to the medications sitting on the shelf inside of CMC.
Yeah yeah, I know. So we either take it back for ourselves
and get rid of these bringing insurance companies, or we let them keep making
profits off of us. So let's let's let's circle back to what you're doing
Tuesday, U And is that going to be Is that going to be on
C space in or is this going to be required this panel or I mean,
I would assume I think it might be live on Senator Sanders YouTube.
I'm not sure where else, but that's a good question, and I will
inquire about that. I know it will be recorded. So on Tuesday night,
I'm attending town hall with Senator Sanders and Representative j Ball and a number
of physicians. I'm actually honored to be the patient on this panel, and
we're going to talk about Medicare for all and what it would mean for us,
you know, and what would change, what could happen, and what
we're living with right now. You know, this is an opportunity for these
people that are elected to actually hear us to actually I'm going to actually say
I'm a patient. I'm not getting the care I should be getting. I
can't get the care I helped give when I was in medicine, you know.
And I'm just one voice, but at least it's a voice, and
that's what all of us need to be doing. We all need to be
in our representatives and senators ears about this. It's time to do away with
the stupid insurance companies that literally bring nothing good to tell me one I would
like one person to give me one example of something the insurance does for me
that makes my care easier or better or more access because I can't think of
a dang thing nothing, you know, So we get rid of them.
So this panel is going to be talking about all of that, and we
aren't. There'll be I'm doing opening We're all doing opening remarks, There'll be
a question and answer period and so forth. And then on Wednesday, the
bill will be officially introduced in Congress, and after shortly thereafter, there will
be a press conference which I will be attending talking about the launch of this
bill. I'm really hoping to maybe get a chance to see Senator Shaheen or
maybe Congressman Papist. I'd like to see them get involved in this, you
know, and be our voice, you know, and co sponsor this legislation
and work towards making sure that every American gets a USA American Health Card and
gets taking care of No child goes without they're antibiotic, and no elderly person
like the people we know and love are rationing their insulin. Because even at
thirty five dollars a bottle, if you need seven, that's a lot of
puts a lot of money if you haven't even eaten yet, And how many
of us our rents have gone up. Everything's insane. We don't have enough
money left. You're making choices between medication and food. You know that nobody
should have to be able to do that in America. This is America.
Why do we accept that we're better than this? We should be and it
would be a great We could do it, and we could do it.
We totally could do it, especially if Americans in general just basically tell powers
that be poundstand. I don't care what side of the aisle you're on.
You need to get behind keeping me healthy and having a wonderful life like I
deserve, I deserve dignity, I deserve compassionate care, all of us do
There are children with my disease that don't get access to the care that I
am paying for out the nose, and I'm barely holding onto it. And
there are people that could absolutely benefit by so much if we just get rid
of it. Damn insurance companies, they deny things without even talking. I
mean, they have computers now that look for keywords and then batch denial,
just denial it. No human being even looked at who you are. They
don't know you, that they care about you. It's just a computer reading
your number, reading a keyword, reading the wrong code. Like wouldn't it
be amazing if we had a medical system that if the wrong code was used,
one department calls the other depart artment and they fix it instead of denying
it and sending it back to you and stressing you. I mean, I
can remember walking in on my grandma, just in tears, with all these
medical bills, all these horrible medical bills, and the way that people would
talk to her on the phone, demanding her payments and getting on payment plans.
And you know, I can remember years ago, in my twenties,
living in Kentucky, I had got brought in emergently. I had passed out
and I ended up needing it bluecoath and I had this huge bill because I
didn't have any healthcare. Those healthcare in Kentucky's really bad. And I ended
up getting put in collections. And I can remember being on the payphone because
I didn't have a phone, being on the payphone calling about this bill I
got. And I know lie to you. I swear the person literally said
to me, if you couldn't afford the bill, you shouldn't have made it.
Literally said that. Yea literally said that. And this is the system
that's still in play today, and it's never going to get any better until
we say enough, we have to demand it. Not going to happen unless
we start demanding it. And we could have it, We could have it.
It would be something so monumental, amazing for this country. There would
be so much more. We saved, such a healthier economy just for the
simple fact that people wouldn't be medically poor anymore. Right, Oh yeah,
yeah, the whole country would be doing better in that regard. Absolutely,
absolutely, absolutely gonna get the profits out of medicine and get medicine to where
it belongs. About medicine, about people. It's a human issue. It's
not a democratic issue, it's our republican issue, breaking human being, decency
issue. All right, Jennie, Well, thank you for thank you for
calling in. I wanted wanted to make sure everyone knew what you were doing.
And you know, we'll talk more about it on Monday, of course.
But yeah, absolutely, this is a great opportunity, so proud of
you. Absolutely, do my best. Thank you. I'm gonna do my
best, all right. I got a lot of hope that I've not held
in a long time, so I know, I know there's where we're going.
Yes, yes, all right, you have good shows. I will
be listening. I'm looking forward to retro later on this evening too. Yes,
me too. I will see you in the chat room. Okay,
thank you, bye bye bye, all right, Jenny leaves us. That
does open up a line for you six zo three two five zero six z
seven six Z three two five zero six z seven. You can also text
me at six one seven nine one seven four or four seven six. I'm
on social media at Matt Connerton. You can interact endo opine in the Facebook
live chat, of course, and we'll say a load everybody in there in
a moment. But The best thing to do so that we can hear and
enjoy your Dulca tones is give us a call at six o three two five
six seven, and coming up at five pm, of course, we'll have
Eric Pilter's classic film review and this week the subject is the movie Training Day
with Denzel Washington and and Ethan Hawk, which came out in two thousand and
one. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but yeah,
it really was. It really was. So but uh, yeah, Jenny's
very excited about her trip to DC on Tuesday. Uh it's um, yeah,
it's she she didn't she didn't see that particular opportunity coming, you know,
getting involved with um rights and democracy Heather Stockwell her organization there or she's
part of it. I don't know if she if she runs a whole thingers
she's just a part of it. But um, but she Jenny did not
expect that that is where this would lead. Where you know, she'd be
going to Washington, d C. To sit on a panel and uh talk
to Bernie Sanders and it's uh, it's a big deal, so very exciting
and uh and hopefully it uh you know, she can be a part of
some change that we definitely need. Here. Um, let's see, let's
uh say hello to everybody in the Facebook live chat. It looks like a
busy, busy chat room. Jenny of course is in the chat room and
says shalom peeps. Also, Mariam Banish joins us and says, uh drag
ron Yes a song from Rocky Mountain Mike, there's one of the songs I
opened with today. The video has a picture of him and his white his
white boots that he wore, and there was a flooding. Let's see,
our friend Shannon is on the line. High Shannon, So good afternoon,
afternoon. What's up sunshine? Yeah, we never got the crowding up this
afternoon? Did we never got what I think I believe they said, possible
send this to him later this afternoon. They could still be coming. But
oh yeah, I don't know. I didn't pay any attention to that.
It was pretty clear skies this morning. But anyway, one thing I wanted
to mention, well, first of all, I'm proud of Jenny two yes,
and happy Mother's Day to her as well. I wanted to say that
before Sunday. Yes, uh, but like medicare and medicates what I have,
they won't cover hearing it. Yeah, it's incredible. I mean it's
um. And you have to get on the doctor, not the doctor,
but the office whoever does the job to call in for prior authorizations. You
know, you have to get on them because I mean I had a mirageous
ones that one woman's job. Her job was to call insurance companies for prior
authanizations. Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's the whole tangled web.
Yeah, shouldn't be. But if you didn't hear the Morning Show, just
listen to it another time. But um, John Hopwood said he had maculate
degeneration, and I just want to I want to give a heads up to
any person of a certain age older than sixty seventy that gets a diagnosis of
age related macular degeneration. You might start seeing things. And if you tell
your family or whatever, hey, I'm seeing not not cousin Bob from the
past, but two shapes or colors or two different things. If you're not,
I'm afraid that a lot of people of the baby bloom or generation and
a little bit of mine are going to be put either not believed or just
not listen to too because if if they're parents or whatever, says I was
looking over here and then all of a sudden, I see this and this
and this. Yeah, don't jump to the conclusion she's she's going up to
be then we've got to get her into a home or whatever. It is
a syndrome called Charles Bonnet syndrome. When you are actively losing your sight,
you may or may not start to see things, what kind of your eyes
open with your eyes close, just like you know, because I don't know
how optimologists or traumatrists handle that when when they give a diagnosis for rmb UM,
I don't think they that. You know, by the way, if
you start seeing things, don't panic. But it's called Charles Bonet syndrome.
It's in the book. It's the christ chapter in the book Hallucinations by doctor
Oliver Sax Shannon. What if you see something and the thing that you see
begins well, no, I hope not. I'd better not see that guy.
Ever, what happens if you do see something and the thing you see
begins speaking to you and it says, come with us, Shannon, Come,
come with us, where are we going? Really? Wow? You're
easy? No, no, no, I it's very strange. When I
go from my three am walks in the dark m the lights on the houses
and the street lights illuminate stuff enough to where when I get home, I
can still see houses and cars and street lights. And it's kind of is
that's meat? That part is meat for me? It is it's I don't
know, I'm alone and only child. It's entertainment, yes, you know,
But what do you think is going on in those houses with the lights
that you seem hopefully something strange is going on in those houses? Shannon's the
strangers going on this house? I I and this is this is well?
Never mind, just ne min. Why are you going out for walks at
three am? Shannon? Because the sun hurts the chatteract part of the program.
I see, I have two types. So do you carry a taser
or a pepper spray? All right? Just my cane and cigarettes? All
right? And I keep my ears. I walk in the middle of the
road because there's no cards about. I don't walk on main street. Yes,
okay, good, I don't walk on main streets. I did,
yeah, I mean I the last time I went for a walk, I
thought I'd missed a turn because there wasn't a street light on, and it
was just dark for a while. But no, it's it's just interesting because
my neighbor happened to have a RMB and she was telling me. You know,
I came out here into her living room and I was downstairs talking to
her. She says, all of a sudden, I see these these shapes
and colors, and I said, don't worry about it. That's that's Charles
Bonnet syndrome. Okay, So just you know, yeah, yeah, because
I would assume him. If I'm an older person and I start seeing stuff,
I'm going a panic. Right, Well, what's the syndrome? Did
you say? If you start seeing Charles Barkley everywhere? Is that what you
said? Yes, Oh it's Charles Barkley, M Bruce Springsteen, everybody.
Okay, all right, Well it's good to know in case that ever happens
to me. So John Hopwood probably see Charles Barkley everywhere. Well, that's
that's what made me think of it, because you know, someday he might
say, you know, close his eyes and see some weird things. What
the heck is that? Well, that's what it is. Joe Friday wants
to know if you have a life alert. Joe Friday is very concerned about
you walking around at three am. Oh no, I could just take all
the bridge that boils up every week that I have to deal with just on
my own understand somewhere. Well, that's that's good, okay, all right,
Well I believe you be good outcome, but I'll give my best.
That's what counts. To listen for footsteps? Yeah, fine, because it's
very quiet also at three am, that's true. Have you ever heard footsteps
and then turned and there's no one there? It's fruitless to me for me
to turn, because if there was someone six feet behind me, I would
see right. So or so you think, No, I just uh,
guys, I don't know. I just keep talking. It's what's really neat
is when you when you start um lucking east, if you keep going east,
yeah, beast. Do you hear what ge the mocking birds starting up
all of these different families. It's neat to hear them start to go from
east to west. Have you ever determined if they chirp in any sort of
a pattern, Shannon, A pattern that might be trying to communicate something something
about. Yes, the favorite one is the curler do they do that because
they're alerting you to an alien invasion of sorts? No, they're they're alerting
me that they're the angels for me, Shannon, What if there's an alien
race of Charles Barclay's waiting to pounce and this is all part of their plan.
I realized nothing I'm saying makes any sense. But what if? What
if that is what it is? Shannon? I missed part of Trump Berkley
book. It doesn't matter, Shannon. It was a really lame joke that
I made and I already regret it. But what if, Shannon, what
if? Hey, it's a good country sun. What if Shannon, the
name of the name of the sun is what if it's good m hmm.
Well, all right, Shannon. Now, strange things are happening, and
strange things are happening, that's for sure, and I promise I'm not going
to bring it up at the time. But the thing is that I said
it on the Morning Show, that's not enough flying people out and about.
It's not that there's not enough flying people. This is not enough that are
that are out in public right and people don't just use common sense. I
was ignorance, stupidity, beyond belief. I mean just just I don't know.
So you want you want blind people? You want there to be more
blind people out and about. It would be nice. Yeah. Um,
do you ever just uh, do you ever just walk into a place and
go where all the blind people at? No? Okay, I was wondering.
No, I know that I've come across. It wasn't two the three.
Um I saw one or two Jmax that I was on his way to
a guide dog school. Let's get some new cloth. Yes, I was
at the bank of years later and I had my guide dog and I saw
another guy something with a dog because he said, what school did you go
to? So I knew what he was talking. I knew what he was
saying, and I knew he was talking to me. But anyway, Shannon,
how do you know how do you know that the dog? How do
you know that the How do you know that the dog was not actually a
shape shifting Charles Barkley? It very well could have been. After all,
his name is Charles Barkley. See what I did there? Yes, I
did. That's why I'm an afternoon drive. Yeah, we're approaching the top
of the hour, Shannon. But I've enjoyed our conversation here today, and
uh, let's let's get more blind people out there. No, it's oh
sorry, A lot of them just stay home. Yes, you know,
I don't know, but there's not enough people of importance of you know,
high power that are visually impaired. So you want you so you're ad I
like where you're going, Shannon. So you're advocating for the elite, the
one, the one percent, if you will, in the sky country,
the ruling class to go blind. I like it. I'm with you,
power, power of the people. I wish everybody would be struck blind for
a day, maybe a week in in they I pray for this. Where
does it sound, Shannon, strike everybody blind and make them speak? All
right, Shannon, listen, I'm not I'm not a religious man myself,
but and I haven't been, to the chagrin of my dad, I haven't
been to church in a very long time. But I will tell you this.
I will tell you this. I did learn a few things going to
Catholic school from grade two to grade eight growing up. And uh, I
I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that the I don't
think theologically it is necessarily a sound idea to be to be praying for people
to go blind. I don't think you're supposed to pray for any day to
go blind day and English that way, there would be no problem with race,
because you wouldn't know. I don't know if you're even supposed to to
pray for people to go temporarily blind. I just don't know if that's a
thing you're supposed to pray for. But I don't know. I don't know
that because you no one would be able to do much of anything. Everything
is a mhm hm. Anybody to get into an accident today and be blinded
for the rest of your life if the accident happens to a certain way and
you bust structimitable. You know what if what if everyone were blind and they
were given a bust and they were told not everyone will get the joke,
and they were told that it was a bust of Lionel Ritchie from the Hello
video, but it turned out to actually be a bust of the face of
Charles Barkley. As long as it's a fun bus part of us, it's
not a bus, it's a bust, oh bust. See my hearing.
I don't Shannon, Shannon, is it possible that you're having difficulty hearing because
somebody somewhere prayed that everyone would be deaf for a day? Everything about that?
No, see see see that. It's not so much fun, is
it when people pray for bad things for other people. I hope you've Shannon,
I hope you've learned an important lesson here today. But I want hopefully.
I know you're joking and stuff, but you do understand my point,
right I do. I don't say please Jesus, I beg of you loose
No, but if that did happen for a day, people might have to
communicate with each other and tough instead of texting and whatever, and they wouldn't
be able to step away from this person because you know, I don't know,
Shannon, I'm going to confess something you here on the air and to
the audience, of course. Uh. And I'm not I'm not proud of
this. But remember remember what was it? Maybe? Uh, if I
don't know, maybe five six months ago there was the news story that Vladimir
Putin had had had fallen down and soiled himself. Yes, because he didn't
get it in the suitcase quick enough. I'm going to Uh, I'm gonna
admit something. Uh. And again, I'm not proud of this. I
h I prayed for that to happen to him. Yeah, you probably probably
didn't, but he loved it when he did. Don't judge me. Only
God can judge me. Couldn't happen to big guy. Well, it could
happen to a few of those, but all right, Shannon, all right,
you have a nice show, and thank you that that book also talks
about Parkinson's and all the other In other words, the people who all these
diseases are named after Alzheimer's. Yes, you know, Charles Barkley disease,
Charles Barkley disease. Yeah, yeah, TBD, TBD, Charles Barkley disease.
I thought you so, oh CBD sorry, yes, yes, yes,
all right, Shannon, Well, thank you for the call. All
right, and get Jenny's a nice pretty flowers for Mother's Day. Well perhaps
I shall, all right, all right, Shannon, thank you, bye
bye. All right, that was our friend Shannon, and we are at

Denzel Washington, that name alone draws such reverence from film fans. His
performances are legendary, and time and time again, he is wowed filmgoers with
his wide range of abilities. Before two one, there were questions if Washington
could be one character that was the quote unquote bad guy or villain. This
week's film answered that with one of his greatest performances. Directed by Antoine Fuqua
and released in two thousand and one, Training Day gives us the story of
idealistic cop Jake hoy ethan Hawk in his resurgent role, who is wanting to
become a narcotics detective or a narc He is selected by officer Alonzo Harris Washington
to go through a training day to try and make his squad. As the
day evolves, we see Harris's facade as a decorated, well respected in feared
cop fall apart in the ruins of corruption, greed, and lawlessness. Our
first clip sets the stage for this day. Our next clip is the first
meeting between hoy and Smith in a coffee shop. We hear the coldness that
Harris has in the eagerness of hoy This is important because as this film progresses,
the Harris coldness evolves into ruthlessness and Hoyt's eagerness turns into helpless despair.
I'm trying to read my paper. Please shut up the last you would mind
not roasting a hot black and white Olson. Tell me a story like my
story. No, not your story. A story. Since you can't keep
your mouth shut long enough for me to read my paper, tell me a
story. I don't think I know any stories. You don't know any stories,
all right, I'll tell you a story. This is a newspaper,
right, there's ninet. But it's entertaining. That's why I read it.
Because it entertains me. You won't let me read it, so you entertain
me with your boy tell me a story right now, go Well, it
was a DUI stop, a dui stop. Let me load up my gun.
Uh oh, listen, all right, it's kidding. We were on
to watch. Oh, me and Debbie. Who's Debbie? I'm sorry,
Debbie Maxwell, my training officer had a female training lasser, yes, sir,
okay, all right, so what would you black White's wife? It's
pretty good, pretty good, Debbie made watch? Go right? All right?
Well, so it was a real quiet boom. You never know,
that's the point. Go all right, Well it was. It was quiet
night. We're rolling on vand when I'm driving this accurate just a beautiful car
comes out of side street all over the media in excess. I lighted up.
Hit the whaler. Guy drives on like I'm invisible for ten blocks before
he pulls over. All right, he plays run clean, and so I
feel tasked and arrest and I'm I'm belting him in our unit, and Debbie's
tossing his car. She calls me over to the vehicle and shows me slump
thirty eight and two shotguns, fully loaded and mocked. So she calls her
supervisor, and I keep searching. I find five hundred grams of meth in
the dash. Turns out this duy is unbailed for distribution on his way to
smoke his ex partner before trial were prevented the murder you got him. It's
amazing. It is that you could be out there or the final for a
year and the most entertaining story that you can come up with to tell me
is a drunk stop. But I don't believe you. You tapped that,
you know you tapped that, you put in the backseat. Bam, cold
X man. I got a wife. You gotta do you do have?
Yes? Okay? It lines up straight like that. Right to the right
of it and to the left of it a pockets right in those pockets of
money looking one of them made a bill. With most cop films, there
is corruption either right in front of our eyes or it is heavily implied.
What makes this film different is it is not over the top. It is
painfully real and drives this story. Our next two clips are examples of this.
First, Alonso has to meet a group of officers that call themselves the
Wise Men because of their ability to use corruption to get whatever they want.
In this meeting, we hear the trouble Alonzo is in after a disturbing and
disgusting story. Then, after Alonso kills someone to take millions hiding in his
own home, his relationship with Hoyt begins to unravel, but not until Alonso
makes one more attempt to convince Jake that what they are doing is acceptable.
Let you see you, John, it's my new guy who works on my
squad, Jake hooy Captain Luke Jacobs. You ever need to talk to the
Fed, you talk to him first, good man, and can take it
back for you. Stan gerd Skill over here, he runs the DA shooting
team. You think about him before you pull the trigger, because you're wrong.
He'll snap nuts out. Use him for dice, detect him. Doug

crowd. You know if you lose a Picasso, he'll find it for your
diet. Fine, he's a good man. Please meet you, good man
boom shoot. Get yourself a baseball steak or something. Yes, I don't
know why I'm meeting you. I don't talk to dead man. Ain't that
Jackie quite a long faced? Doug huh Bet sees your house or something told
him the story. Come on, tell the story. You think it's so
funny. You're talking no, no story, you tell it all right,
all right, this is cereal burglar, tracing him for twelve months and real
slicks that gave up nothing. Captain's riding my ass the entire time. Sensing
was today Judge's female, that's right Landers, Yeah, I know Lander's shop

and he's standing tall before the bench and he's waiting to give a statement.
So he shoves his hand down his pants, comes out with a gob a
extra chunky chief. Payliffs won't come near. Now. He's looking to judge
right in the eyes, licks his fingers way. So Judge says, uh,
oh, this poor man's insane. He can't go to prison, orders

Times she found out it was sandwich spared. The order was signed that
God had been transferred, proceedings closed, got freckled. Six months in the

his freedom. Yeah so or not. I'll tell you what. I'm gonna
find this guy on the straight and I'm gonna do him. You better take
his bullets from him, staying, Lonzo, he had an expensive weekend in
Vegas? How did you ever screw up so bad? Nothing? It's nothing,
forget it. You know, I didn't know. It's not my town.
I'm not a mission. But Russians don't care. If you have that
hatch whack you You're to hYP jet out of here? Why? It's an
easy fix. It's cash in an account. Oh yeah, yeah, who's
one of my old ones? My first one. It's not a problem.
Look, the guy's a high security risk anyway, I'm not around. Who's
gonna keep him off the radar? Are you? I'm just taxing? That's
okay, that's your call. I do not want you to I do not
want to see you on the front page like those others. Yeah, I
understand. Who's driving me Mercedes? Okay? And now hoit? Questions Alonzo
later? It wos you're not the Browns justified brown side the line? It
to be okay, now what happened? What happened was the murder and armor
robber. Oh, we had badges, so it's different. Son, kill
for your eyes? Can't you see that man was your friend and you killed
him. Come my friend because he knows my first name. Sudden, this
is the game. I'm playing his ass. That's my job. That's your
job. Rogers sold though to kids. The world is a better place without
him. Hey, this man was the biggest major violator in Los Angeles.
I watched that Tucker operate with impunity for over ten years, and now I
got it the ship. Yes, it ain't check us. What do you
think we're gonna do? Roll up in a black and white huh? Slap
the cups on them. You're under arrest. That's a high roller. Dog.
Take the money, you know, Harry told you I'm not gonna take
this. Take. I'm not gonna take that. You don't just burn it
barbecue with fish fried. I don't give it. But the boys don't feel
better, but their feelings, Jake, you're not making them feel like you're
part of the team. It's a team. You guys are insane. All
right, I'll go back to the valley. I'll cut parking tickets. You
know he can't be like this. It is this way. Man, I'm
sorry I expose you to it, but it is. It's ugly, but
it's necessary. I became a cop to put away drug dealers, the poisoners,
the criminals, not to be one. It sounds just like man and
I bought what you're going through. I know what you're feeling. You're scared.
I'm not scared as you want to terrified. Everybody goes through that.
The first time I went through him the sona. You can match us in
your head. That's what's going on in the real world. The better you're
gonna feel in this business, you're gonna have a little gut on you for
anybody to trust you. I'm gonna all this is behind you. There's gonna
be a hoomb on the world that opens up for you. I walk a
hiad and past sun. I can give you the keys to hold the doors.
But it's talking. My guys are pretty good. But then I leave
this inn. Clowns. You're lead and you want my job, You've got
it. I'm una lock up poisonous. This is the best place to do
it. But you gotta just you don't take your time. You may detective
and play the game and grow wise and then you can change things, but
you gotta change him from the inside. So let's go down down to the
station. You talk to my guys staying and it will walk keep through what
you gotta say to the da guys. Okay. This film has many great
performances and cameos from the aforementioned Hawk, Tom Barringer, Doctor Dre Macy,
Gray, Snoop Dogg, and Eva Mendez. But no mistake, the performance
that is not just the top in this film, but one of the greatest
ever, is that of Washington. In our final clip, the unraveling of
Alonso is complete when men that Alonso allows to illegally operate in a local neighborhood
do not take Jake out when he commands them too. He loses all control
and gives a speech that many, myself included, feel is one of the
most memorable in cinema history. Oh you mother, okay, all right,
I'm putting cases on all are you? Huh? You think you can do
this? Jay? You think you can do this to me? You'll mother
will be playing basketball in Pelican Bay when I get finished with you. Shoot
program twenty three hour Lockdown. I'm the man up in his You'll never see
the light of dude. Though you think you I'm the police, I've you'll
just live in Yeah, that's right, you better walk away. Gone walk
away, because I'm gonna burn this down. King cong Ain't got on me.
This film marked a major turning point for Washington. As I stated before,
it proved he could play the villain and do it well. It gave
him an added dynamic to his already awe inspiring range, so much so he
has went on to play other unscrupulous individuals in their films. While they are
great performances, they do not match the verocity and powerhouse performance he gives in
this film. This film was a hit. It was the second highest October
opening in cinema history, at twenty four point two million its opening weekend.
The only reason it opened in October is following the September eleven attacks, the
film was delayed by a month. It finished with one hundred and four point
nine million grossed worldwide. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Supporting
Actor for Hawk and Best Actor for Denzel Washington. Rightfully and Deservingly Washington one
for Best Actor. It has spawned a since canceled television series and a prequel
of the film is currently in production. It is timeless and its realness,
rawness and unabashed power. I would recommends Filmed to anyone, no matter what
films they like. With my highest recommendation, I hope you will join me
next week when we will look up to the sky and answer is it a
bird? Is it a plane? Well? Maybe, but one thing is
for sure. It is the first comic book film blockbuster. We will look
at Christopher Reeves in the nineteen seventy eight film Superman. The movie for WMNH

By the way, so thank you to our friend Eric Pilcher from Cedar
Rapids, Iowa for another great classic film review this week. The subject was
training Day and I don't always let the song that he plays at the places
at the end play out, but I had to let that one go.
I love that. You can't go wrong with dre and Snoop. By the
way, so while that was happening, so that was probably the quickest thunderstorm
I've ever seen in my life. I'm not kidding, So I'm sitting here.
It was about when the song was coming on and all of a sudden
I can hear it outside. The wind is just you know, on Elm
Street. It becomes kind of a wind tunnel anyway. I can hear the
wind just whooshing. I look over out the windows and I can see,
you know, the traffic lights here at the intersection. I can see the
traffic lights moving, so I know the wind is blowing really hard. And
then it's and then the rain comes and it's just and then I swear like
it was it was a severe thunderstorm outside for maybe two three minutes at most,
probably about two minutes. For about two minutes, it looked like just
torrential outside, and then it just and then the sun came back out.
That was probably the quickest storm I've ever seen in my life. And now
it's bright and sunny and right back to being a beautiful day. Although I
do enjoy a good storm is as long as i'm you know, somewhere,
I don't like being stuck like dry having in it. That's terrible. You're
out driving and all of a sudden, the sky opens up and it just
starts pouring and you can't see where you're going. But no, as long
as I'm indoors or in under some sort of shelter, I love a good
uh. I love a good thunder storm, But that was quick. That
was a very very quick storm. Six h three two five six Z seven

Sometimes on Friday, you know, you get to the end of the
week and it's like, um, I remember in everything, Friday is a
busy day. So I got a lot going on in my head because Friday
is my long day here at the station. Because after this show, well
after this show, we have Grant State of Mind hosted by Rob as a
Veto and Polyc I mean no poly Stone. See we have too many Pauls
pauly Stone. But they now now that we're in the summertime weather. They
actually record the show every week at Pembroke City Limits and then they send the
show to Peter and he plays it from six to seven. But then I'm
back from eight to eleven pm for retro Spectrum Radio with Pauly c and I'll
tell you what we've got tonight on the show. This is what Paul put
on social media. Friday Night on retro Spectrum Radio will be presenting an evening
of dance and dubstep versions of classic rock tunes by the original artists. Some
of them had dance versions upon their original release that were rarely, if ever,
heard outside of a nightclub, and others will be classic original rock tunes
that have been reworked into modern day dubstep and low five beats. This is
something you don't want to miss and do join us tonight on Spectrum Radio.
And of course, like I said, I'm one of Paul's co hosts on
that show along with DJ Steve and I believe this week we are expecting the
triumphant return of Mike from Queen City Cabinetry, where you can bring your kitchen
to life at Queen City Cabinetry, of course, in the historic Sunbeam Mall.
Mike is not only one of our great sponsors here at WMH ninety five
point three, but one of our co hosts on Retrospectrum Radio as well.
He became our official co host, and then he he was here for a
couple of episodes, and then he got injured. He suffered a terrible injury,
and then but he's I think he's supposed to be back tonight. We'll
see, but it'll be great to see him. But six three two five
six seven, if you'd like to edit one with the call before this show
concludes four of the week six two five six seven. I do want to
say hello everybody in the Facebook live chat. We didn't get to any everybody
yet. Um, let's see Joe Friday is in there. Hello. Joe
Friday was expressing some concerner earlier about Shannon walking around at three am. U
Joe Friday said, I will go walk with her. Makes me nervous for
her. Uh. Jay Feted, of course is in the Facebook live chat
from the great state of Vermont. Isaac Banks joins us and now Isaac Banks
I believe, I believe is from Greensboro, North Carolina. Isaac had a
question for Shannon. Unfortunately I didn't see this. While Shannon was still on
the line, Isaac said, Shannon, what's your favorite the outfield song?
I can tell you my favorite outfield song. Is well, they're big hit
that. I don't want to what is it? I don't want to lose
your love. Tonight. When I was a kid and I took guitar lessons,
this is true. That was the first song I ever learned on the
guitar. I learned how to palm, mute and do that. I could
probably I could probably still play that today. Let's see, Isaac Banks says
Shannon, what's your favorite pizza? I wish I had seen these earlier.
Let's see Jay Fed's trying to arrange a three way ice bath. I'm sorry,
Joe Friday's trying to arrange a three way ice bath. Jay Fed points
out blind people can't see other blind people. If you don't know what these
are referring to, you'll have to go back and listen to the first hour
of the show. Let's see, Isaac Banks says hashtag Matt Connerton. Yesterday,
I was watching my favorite eighties karate movie of all time is No Retreat,
No Surrender. I can't say that I've ever seen that film, Joe
Friday, says Jay Fed for president. Jay Fed says, sometimes I feel
like I'm going blind. It's probably Shannon's curse. Yes, Joe Friday said
mel would be the first lady, first l at the bar. Melanie Lie
Liberty is in the Facebook live chat, of course, Hello mel of course
from the great state of Vermont. Let's see. I'm gonna skip some of
these. A lot of these refer to just the the Shenanigans. During the
first hour Shenanigans, Isaac Banks says, hashtag Matt Connerton, check out of
my Facebook like page? Is Isaac Eichman Banks? Oh? Or old friend
Rocky Hubert is in the Facebook live chat. I haven't seen Rocky in the
chatwoman, while he says, Hi, long time listener, first time in
the chat? What goes in here? What goes in here? Melanie said,
What is up with Eric picking out a movie with such naughty language?
I'm so offended. Well, there's no need to be offended, Melanie.
All the bad words, all the naughty bits, if you will, are
bleeped out for terrestrial radio of course FCC compliant. Rocky says, is that
Alex Jones guys still talking about his ice baths in Vermont? Isaac Bank says,
hello, hashtag Eric, how are you? And good afternoon? Oh,
Let's see Melanie said there there are more bleeps than actual words. That's
not true. That's not true. Jay Fed says, I didn't use clips
with such foul language in my review. I have a feeling Matt didn't get
it. No, I did not get I did not receive your version of
the review, Jay Fed. We could have done a side by side comparison,
but I did not. I did not receive it. Shannon is back
on the line. High Shannon, Melanie's right that one part that he played
that there were more bleeps and words. Well, you know, uh,
some people just have potty mouths. What can you do? But that's what
makes the movie good too. Well, it's realistic people talk. Yeah,
yeah, but yeah, anybody wants to take it for your am walk great,
if you're roping awake, there you go. If you're up at if
you're up in awake, go find Shannon. She'll be good. She'll be
the one walking rock. Okay. Nobody knows my luck. But with my
luck, if I've got a candid spray base, i'd spray myself. Well
that wouldn't be good, you know, or I wouldn't really at least I
remember to check the wind, the luss where the women's going before I sprayed
it though, Yes, very important. So okay, I've heard my name
a couple of times, so I heard that he'd go for a walk with
me, right, yeah, Joe Friday says. Joe Friday is up and
awake, so apparently m the visor peaceful time of the day. M hmm.
I said, it's a peaceful time of the day. Oh, yes,
yes, absolutely, all right, right, all right Shannon and j
Steve. Yes, you got it all right, Shannon, thanks, Michael
be able to get there hopefully, Yes, that'll be wonderful, all right,
right, Oh yeah, a couple times, a few times. Yeah,
all right, have a good all right, Shannon, you too,
Bye bye, hope. Joe Friday says, yes, three am. Well,
if you're driving around out there and you're happen to see a woman walking
in the middle of the road, that's probably Shannon. Isaac Banks says Training
Day is a good movie. Um, Isaac says, oh lord, he
is a good actor. Is Denzel Washington? Superman? Awesome? Yes?
Next week Eric Pilcher will be uh reviewing Superman. Jenny says, three AM.
Good band three AM, I can't think of who that is? The
band six am Isaac Bank says R I P Tony Lewis and John Spinks.
Uh rit, uh, let's see. I guess we're about caught up in
Oh. Jenny says, oops, that was an album. Yeah, there's
a band six Am, which is of course the other band that Nikki six
has is a side project from Motley Crue. Oh. Also, I see
Karen Cubit is in the chat. I haven't heard from Karen in a long
time, so nice to see you in there. If you're still in there.
Six three two five six seven is the studio line if you would like
to join us on the program six two five six seven. Um. Obviously
there was a lot going on this week, but we might have to just
uh, let's look at this. Well, we'll end. Uh, this
will probably take up the rest of the show. We'll see. But um.
Yeah, So there's more debt ceiling news as we as we continue to
barrel toward economic calamity. There was supposed to be another meeting today, I
believe, with the White House and Kevin McCarthy, and that got scrapped.
But it might actually be a good thing because people from both sides who are
not President Biden or Speaker McCarthy are apparently sitting down and working on working on
working out some sort of a compromise here. Oh, Joe Friday says,
by the way, r I p two Snickers, my tenants cat of eighteen
years. Robbie O sang a nice or Robbio sorry, rob Dion sang a
nice attribute to snickers, attribute song to Snickers. Okay, that must have
been on the Morning show yesterday. Oh, sorry to hear about that.
Yeah, Jenny and I lost a cat a couple of years ago, Molly,
who passed away. And it's hard, you know, they're they're part
of the family. So this is from the Hill dot Com. Here are
the top four areas of debt ceiling compromise that the GOP is eyeing. I
want to I want to look at this, and I didn't really get a
chance to preread this, but I'll look at this and I'll kind of give
my thoughts on these, and if you'd like to chime in and give your
thoughts on the ease, you can in the little time we have left today.
But it says here. With negotiations in the White House underway this week,
House Republicans are getting more candid about what compromises they consider most feasible,
and a debt ceiling deal. Representative Garrett Graves, Republican of Louisiana, a
deputy to Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He is Garrett Grave. I don't I don't
even I don't know anything about this Garrett Graves. I can't even picture the
guy. But apparently he's important. He's a deputy to the Speaker McCarthy.
Wow. I don't know how he got by me. I know nothing about
Garrett Graves, but it says he was central to outlining the House GEO P
debt limit bill. Told reporters in a lengthy pen and pad discussion Thursday that
the lowest hanging fruits for agreement with Democrats are permitting or permitting reform work requirements
for public assistance programs, spending caps, and resending unspent COVID nineteen funds.
Graves said, quote, if I were the person that we're trying to lead
a successful negotiation, I would grab those four and start with those. Other
House Republicans echoed those expectations, but some in the conference will likely expect more
in the final agreement, and they point out that Democrats have not yet outlined
any alternative to their own plan. McCarthy also said yesterday the talks between the
White House and Republicans have not been productive so far. McCarthy said, quote,
the President does not want a deal on this. He just wants to
have default. Unquote, I certainly hope not. House Republicans debt Bill,
which was intended to be a starting point for negotiations, paired a one point
five trillion dollar debt ceiling increase with about four point eight trillion in spending cuts
and policy reforms. But they knew that much of that was a non starter
for the Democrats. And by the way, that is obviously how you That
is obviously how you start a negotiation. You know, you start on opposite
ends and you work toward some sort of a mutually beneficial agreement. In addition
to capping spending at fiscal twenty twenty two levels, climb back unused COVID nineteen
funds, blocking President Biden's student loan forgiveness program, and rescinding a boost in
IRS funding past last year, the legislation included the entirety of Republicans HR one
energy bill that would boost production of fossil fuels. Here are where Republicans are
optimistic about reaching a deal. Okay, So there's four points here, So
we'll look at these, and again we don't have a lot of time left,
but I'll give you my quick thoughts, and like I said, feel
free to chime in. Efforts to streamline regulations and procedures for building new energy
projects have been a priority in both parties, though they have disagreed on the
details. Graves highlighted comments from White House Clean Energy Advisor John Podesta about the
need for permitting reform permitting, it's not permitting, it's permitting. I need
to I need to put the amphosis on the correct salable or it completely changes
the meaning permitting reform at the Bipartisan Policy Center this week, Permitting another word,
the act of issuing a permit, not permitting, which would be allowing
something. Okay, and the White House is supporting Senator Joe Mansion's recently reintroduced
permitting reform bill. Graves said, quote, I think that Dems need permitting
reform more than Republicans do. Unquote. Graves thinks it's doable to strike a
deal. Quote we could perhaps do some permitting reform now and come back even
in months and do some of these other things that need to be done.
Unquote, even House Minority Leader Hakim Jeffreys, Democrat of New York, did
not rule out the possibility of supporting permitting reform when asked about it at a
press briefing Thursday. Okay, that sounds promising. Can I do just a
quick side note though, that's something people don't realize, and I didn't realize
this for a very long time. You know, when we talk about permitting
in terms of oil, really it's about in this case that we're talking about
fossil fuels, it's about drilling for oil, you know. And like my
dad likes to say, drill baby, built a drill baby, drill and
all that. Although personally I don't like to ever quote anything that came from
Sarah Palin of all people. But there's something people don't seem to realize.
It doesn't have nearly as much to do with how much oil we drill.
A big part of the problem is refinery capacity. We don't build new refineries.
Now there's reasons, and I don't want to get too sidetracked with all
of that, but you have to you know, you can drill for more
oil but you have to have somewhere to put it. If you don't have
anywhere to put it, then you're stuck. We don't have refinery capacity to
put the new oil that's being drilled. That's really a huge part of the
problem. Then nobody bothers to talk about. But people who actually know something
about it will tell you. I heard someone who actually knows something about it
explain it, and then I said, oh, okay, so that's where
the issue is it. It's not nearly as much about you know, people
just there's there's this, uh, this mass misunderstanding about this. It's not.
The problem is not that we're not drilling for enough oil. We don't
have the refinery capacity to put it. We have to build more refineries if
you want more oil, not necessarily drill for more oil, or build the
refineries and then drill. So anyway, a little bit of just a side
note about that. But people don't people don't know this. I didn't know
that for a long time. Okay, Next thing, Number two, work
requirements. House Republicans Debt Increase bill beefed up work requirements to twenty hours per
week for recipients of supplemental nutrition Assistance program often referred to by the acronym SNAP,
which is also a food stamps. It's the same same as food stamps.
That's what we used to call it, but between fifty and fifty six
years old, there were also changes proposed to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
program, we're often referred to by the acronym TANT. In an outline for
work requirements for Medicaid, quote the lowest hanging fruit are those areas where common
sense Democrats in the past have had robust support, and work requirements are certainly
among them, said Representative Dusty Johnson, Republican of South Dakota, the chair
of the Republican Main Street Caucus, who has spent a lot of time on
crafting work requirements. Johnson said, quote, we don't live in a world
with unlimited resources, and so for those who want to increase SNAP benefits for
the most needy Americans, I would say, work requirements are one way that
we can make sure that we prioritize resources for people who need it most.
Unquote Okay, I mean they should be able to find some agreement there.
I would think, Okay, next one, this is where I think it
might get dicey, but we'll see. So this is the third thing.
Spending caps, a centerpiece of the GOP's debt limit bill, was putting a
cap on discretionary spending at fiscal twenty twenty two levels while allowing for one percent
annual growth for ten years. Graves said that the White House is quote certainly
pushing for a shorter window unquote on a spending caps agreement. Cutting spending has
been central to the Republican wish list for the debt limit and was a major
issue in McCarthy's drawn out speaker election. Representative Tom Cole, Republican of Oklahoma,
chair of the House Rules Committee, said, quote, my guess is
the president would have to spend less than he likes. We would have to
spend a little more than we like unquote. Biden said following his meeting with
McCarthy and other top leaders at the White House on Thursday, that quote,
I'm sorry that not quote, but that rescinding noun spent COVID nineteen relief funds
is on the table, giving Republicans reason to believe that a compromise there is
possible. Um Johnson said, quote the fact that within twenty four hours at
the end of the meeting, they've they're already stepping forward. Acknowledging Republicans strengthen
those areas is exceedingly good news. Unquote. Okay, oh, I skipped
something. I'm sorry that that last thing about Yeah, that was the fourth
thing. I'm sorry. I forgot to clarify that as I was enumerating these
that was the fourth thing, rescinding unspent COVID nineteen relief funds. Yeah.
That seems like that. That seems like the easiest one. Um, okay,
so maybe maybe I've been overly pessimistic. We'll see. Now, Look,
they can find they can find common ground on these things, and they
can hammer out a deal. But that doesn't mean that House Republicans that you're
going to have enough House Republicans voting for a bill that includes these compromises.
So whatever agreement they come to, Kevin McCarthy then has to take it to
you know, again, we call them the House Freedom Caucus. They used
to be the the used to be the Tea Partiers back in the day,
back in twenty twenty thirteen, when I first became really aware, hyper aware
of the debt limit and how it works, and my concern over the issue
and the stance that we go through every time it comes up. But you
know, they can come to an agreement, but McCarthy then has to sell
it to the House Freedom Caucus members. And listen, let's be clear.
There are some House Republicans who are going to vote no on raising the debt
limit. Hopefully it's a small group. I'm not sure, but there are
some who have said they will vote no on any debt limit increase, who
would actually like to default. That apparently is Trump's position again the CNN town
hall the other night, he said, and this is something in the past
I had given him credit for, he used to have the correct position on
it. When he was president. His position was, no, we don't
risk default. We don't use the debt limit as a negotiation wedge. We
don't do any of that. It's too dangerous, it's too risky. Now
his position, apparently from what he was saying at the town hall, was,
you know, he doesn't think a default will happen necessarily because he thinks
Democrats will cave. But if it happens, great, let's get it done.
Let's go ahead and default. We're in a default eventually, Anyway,
let's do it now. It'll be bad for a day or maybe a week,
and then it will probably be fine, which is insane, but apparently
that's his position. And again I would argue no offense. If you agree
with that, you're probably insane. Seems pretty nuts to intentionally destroy the American
economy. I mean, I guess it's an option. But um oh,
Joe Friday says, thanks, Jenny, enjoy your time in Washington. Yes,
yes, yeah, if you missed it, Jenny called us in the
first hour and talked about what she's going to be doing in Washington, DC
next week on Tuesday, she's gonna be flying down and but she'll be here
on the show Monday too and we'll we'll talk about it more. But yes,
very exciting. Um all right, one word, just quick thing because
because we're out of time, so we gotta do something not quick. Our
Governor Chris Sinunu was asked about out speaking of Trump's town hall. Our Governor
Chris Sinunu was asked what he thought about people in the audience there who were
laughing and applauding some of Trump's comments about Egan Carroll and uh, you know,
Snu seems to be opposed to Trump, probably because Sinunu is considering running
himself. But yeah, he had he said something interesting though here. So
we'll just do this quickly because we're almost out of time. This is from
media. New Hampshire's GOP governor rips his own voters who cheered Trump laughing at
sexual abuse victim on CNN. So it says here Governor Sinunu tore into pro
Trump audience at CNN's town hall event with the former president and leading twenty twenty
four GOP presidential candidate on Wednesday night. Sinunu is considering challenging Donald Trump for
the nomination, and he spoke with MSNBC's Jen Saki for a lengthy interview which
will air on Sunday. Saki, President Joe Biden's former press secretary, previewed
part of the interview on MSNBC Friday morning. So she asked, well,
actually, you know what, I can just play it. I'll play I'll
play the clip you spoke with New Hampshire Governor Chris Sunu after former President Trump's
town hall in his home state. Let's take a look at a clip from
that. One of the things that struck me was the laughter in the audience,
particularly when Trump was talking about aging Carroll Simon and Jerry says he's sexually
abused a famed and now has to pay her fifty five million dollars. Now,
you were not involved in making up the audience, but these are these
are people in the audience from New Hampshire, Republicans in New Hampshire, undeclared
voters in that room. I was curious just what your reaction was. But
laughing right now, I can understand at the camera pan through that audience,
I knew pretty much everybody in that they're all Trump supporters, right, So
the audience was absolutely filled with Trump supporters. So I wasn't surprised to hear
the support. But when you're talking about a serious issue like that and laughter
and mocking and all that, that's it's completely inappropriate, without a doubt,
and it doesn't shine a positive light on the Hampshire. But again, understand
what the audience makeup was large percentage of Trump supporters. Oh, I would
say almost all of them. Yeah, I think I have to go back
and look. But to Caitlin's credit, I think should say this is so
and so, and this person voted for you in sixteen and twenty or whatever.
Maybe they're undeclared voter, but I believe every single one of them had
voted for Trump at some point. So I don't know, I mean,
I don't know who they how they determined that and set that up. But
obviously was a room full of Trump supporters. So nope, I thought it
was interesting. He said, you know, when he saw the camera pan
across the crowd, that he recognized a lot of the you know, he
knew most of the people who were there, and so based on knowing them,
he was not necessarily surprised. I guess that they would applaud Trump's mocking
and his his jokes and whatnot about Eegene Carol. And part of why that
struck me that way is because when I heard him say that, I thought,
and Jenny might have thought this as well. Uh yeah, we would
probably say the same thing. If we looked at a shot of the crowd,
we would probably say, oh, yeah, yeah, these these of
course, these are people who think that that kind of thing is hilarious and
they're gonna laugh at Trump mocking and joking about Eegene Carol. Of course,
you know those are trust me. Uh, those are people we would know
as well. Um oh uh. Fredo, also known as I like to
say his full name Alfredo and Rique Benavitis, is in the chat room and
says shameless plug. Dank Sinatra is next on Granted State of Mind. I
did not realize that wonderful. So tonight on Granted State of Mind, which
of course follows us on Fridays at six pm here at WMH ninety five point
three, the guest is Dank Sinatra and Fredo. I assume you guys played
live at Pembroke City Limits for this show, so that is coming up next.
Excellent. I'm really glad I didn't know you were the guests this week
on that show. I'm glad. I'm glad you chimed in. Fredo also
said, also Trump is now a convicted sex offender, just saying, I
don't think that's how it works, Fredo, because it was a civil case
and he was not. Yeah, I don't think that. I don't think
it works that way. I think if it were a criminal case you could
say that, whereas it was a civil case, I don't think that's technically
legally accurate. Fredo says, love your brother always listening. Thank you,
my friend. I appreciate that. We need to we need to get you
back on the show soon. Isaac Banks Us says, by the way,
hashtag Matt Connerton. My friend Luca Huntley is from Atlanta, Georgia. Now
she lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. Oh wonderful. All right, let's
just hear the rest of what our governor had to say in this clip.
No one should have been surprised to hear the support. But again on that
issue, it was I would call it embarrassing. So Jane Governor Sun,
all right, yeah, that's it. Yeah, I agree, I agree,
And apparently now I'm not surprising, of course, but yeah, embarrassing.
And now I guess Eegene Carroll is already talking about suing Trump again because
she successfully sued him for one of the things was, of course, uh,
defamation, and then he goes on national television and continues to defame her
colin, her a job, and this and that. So she's she's actually
threatening to sue him again. It's like, dude, what are you doing?
All right, we should wrap up. We are about out of time,
but thank you all. Of course, Friday is very busy around here.
If you are listening live on Friday, coming up next at six pm
here on WMH ninety five point three FM, it is Grandst State of Mind
hosted by the Great Rob as a Veto and Polly Stone and they're featured artist
this week is Dank Sinatra, so check that out. Great band and I'm
sure it'll be a great show. And then I will be back tonight eight
to eleven pm for Retro Spectrum Radio with Paul c along with DJ Steve and
Mike from Queen City Cabinetry if he's able to make it, and really looking
forward to that. If you miss any part of today's show it we'll be
up in just a little bit at WMNH radio dot org and in my website
Matt Connerton dot com. And um, that's gonna do it for us for
now. Oh, I remember the other thing I wanted to mention, don't
forget Kevin Horren will be playing live at the Hopknot tomorrow night from seven to
nine pm. So Olfredo says in the chat he literally tried defaming her the
night after he was already convicted of defamation. Yes, he he simply doesn't
He's incapable of learning or evolving or growing as a person. Or Hey,
but at least, if you, at least if you're voting for him in
the near future, you know exactly what you're getting. You're gonna get exactly
what you what you always got. No one's no one's gonna be voting for
him blindly, that's for sure. Right he is consistent Old dj T.
All right, we gotta go. I'll talk to y'all a little bit later.
By everybody,
Podbean
