4:33 guitarist from the band Boston Yes, and his new band, I say new

4:38 band. He's been winning the loup. But Barry Goodrow's Engine Room is the

4:41 name of the band, and they've got some awesome stuff. But they actually

4:44 do some Boston tunes as well. So you know, you come to a

4:46 show like that, you get some new stuff and you get some some classics.

4:50 It's gonna be a fun one. So we're looking forward to it.

4:53 That'd be weird if you didn't do some Boston songs. It would make it

4:56 would be really weird. But I'll tell you what, Boston's not easy to

4:58 cover, right, I mean, obviously dope is along with Yeah, I'm

5:01 not easy to to cover some of those students. But the guy, forget

5:04 the singer's name, I can't remember, but he's been with him for a

5:06 while and he does a great job and they do some cool stuff. I

5:09 know that at one point they had Michael Sweet from Stryper singing with him,

5:13 but I don't think. I don't think that's still the case, is it.

5:33 be a jerk, which isn't which isn't true. But can you imagine how

5:36 angry people will be they want to see Colin Hay disappointed and he didn't play

5:41 you know, down Under or something. I did see Colin Hay and yeah,

5:44 and I was looking forward to that too, and unfortunately he did it.

5:46 Although I think he waited at the very end. So really, oh

5:47 really, is he really going to play it? Oh wow? Oh no

5:50 kidding. Yeah, they had a bunch of hits men at work, but

5:53 that's the one everybody remembers. Yeah, probably the one thing he probably probably,

6:48 they brought us to the green room in the back and it was like a

6:51 really stormy day. The waves were crashing up against the side and I literally

6:55 thought like we were gonna it was gonna break the windows, we were gonna

6:59 get watching in a like you feel like, I don't want to say the

7:00 Titanic, but it feels like you're in a boat and the waves are just

7:03 smashing up against the side of the building and you're wondering if you're going to

7:06 live through it. Totally for some vitamin c oh I hope it's low tide.

7:13 You can actually you can walk right out out of the beach and you

7:15 know, go ten minutes early and check out the beach. Get there early

7:17 because and there's a restaurant right next door called it's called Sea Glass, right

7:21 or fig Glas Sea Glass. You should definitely go there for a drink or

7:25 something because the view is extraordinary. Really okay, cool, fun, Wow,

8:01 reached out to those guys. They decided it would be a good fit.

8:05 There's some crossover between us and Barry because Barry's kind of played this circuit,

8:13 some musicians that we've played with that have played with him. Sure, neutral

8:16 and so, uh anyway, they decided it would be a good fit,

14:43 we released it, I think twelve years ago. No, what's the world

14:46 radio premiere of a song that's twelve years old? Wow? Yeah, No,

14:50 we just never did anything with it, and I figured that would be

14:52 kind of fun. You play it live. Not right now, no,

14:56 because no one really knows it, you know, it's just on it.

14:58 It's I think it's on our first album that we ever put out, and

15:01 it was just sort of one of those tracks that we put on there.

15:03 We wanted to do something with it, and then we sort of just moved

15:05 on. But yeah, at the time, I was just Carlo had me

15:09 thinking. There's a guy in the band at the time named Scotty. He's

15:13 infamous in southern New Hampshire. Scotti Hollywood is his name, and he had

15:18 a video planned for this song and literally, this is no joke. Down

15:22 at the Manchester the Mill here, so we used to practice down the street

15:26 in one of the in the mill building and he rented a room. He

15:31 had a bed, right, He bought a bed and he built a round

15:35 It was like a round bed with these little platforms on the side, and

15:39 this was this bed was going to be part of the scene for this video

15:41 and the room was all decked out with different colors and murals on the wall.

15:46 We never shot the video, but Scotty probably is still paying for that

15:48 room over there. But I was waiting for the video to be I think

15:52 I'm glad we never shot that video. I think that's probably why I pulled

15:54 the plug. I was like, this is going the wrong direction. Yeah,

15:58 oh wow, wow, so you got But you guys don't currently play

16:00 that song live. We don't know. I think we've maybe played it once.

16:11 one. It's it was sort of it so we uh, the band was,

16:15 you know, we sort of started in Manchester and I remember there were

16:21 a bunch of bands around at the time and none of them really had any

16:25 chance of making it, but everyone thought we were like the next big thing,

16:29 right, So this is sort of like, well, even if we

16:30 don't make it, we can pretend right, right, and these are the

16:33 things that might happen, right, but sort of poking fun at ourselves.

16:37 Yeah, it was a fun tune. It would be a good video.

16:38 We just never got to it. Yeah. Yeah, well there's there's still

16:45 got best not broken here And we've been talking about the big show coming up

16:48 on April fifth at Blue Ocean And is that in Salisbury, Salisbury, Mass,

16:55 be there and you get to see Barry Goudrou's engine rooms. Have they put

16:59 out music as do they have out? Yeah? Yeah they have does it

17:04 if you listen, does it kind of sound like Boston or does it sound

17:07 different? No, it's got a different sounded. I wouldn't say Boston because

17:11 the vocals are not. Oh yeah, you know, and certainly the layered

17:14 guitars are different. But it's it's very listenable. It's very good. Yeah,

17:18 all right, very good. Yeah, it's it's I would consider similar

17:21 to a similar genre to Boston, you know, like some guitar harmony stuff,

17:25 perhaps a little more uh bluesy, yeah, a little more soulful,

17:33 have to check that out. And well, of course then we're gonna hear

17:34 them live on the fifth, so that's very cool. Have you guys been

17:37 playing out a lot? Have you been doing a lot of shows? Are

17:40 just kind of we're kind of getting back in the game. So winter is

17:41 usually a little slow for us and kind of ramping up for the summer season.

17:45 But we've been we've been doing some cover stuff, you know, and

17:49 and having some fun and uh, kind of getting ready to launch launch the

17:52 summer. Yeah, you got a lot of shows playing for this enough.

18:52 anybody else as far as I know. But Paul used to see this apparition

18:56 or whatever really in the Yeah, yeah, it's pretty weird. Kind might

18:59 have just been a homeless person who got into the building. But sure,

19:02 but I but I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. And here

19:07 we have dogs. Yes, yes, I have a new friend. Apparently.

19:11 We sure it's a real dog and not a ghost. It could be

19:14 it could be a ghost dog. I did pet it. It felt furry.

19:17 Yes, he just wants everybody to be his friend. This dog is

19:23 adorable. We have a very loving, loving puppy in the studio. That's

19:29 distracting me because it's very lovely and we're all we're all animals. He lost

19:34 his owner, his own his owners back, his owners out, his owners

19:40 adoring him conveniently so he can try and go from human the human for extr

19:45 right, Yes, exactly. They got to make new friends. Probably,

19:51 that's that's all right, that's all right. The dog's adorable, loggy paw

20:00 or she, We don't know. Yeah, if it was a male or

20:02 female, I didn't know. Yeah, sure what to call right? Right?

20:07 That was adorable, very cool. What's the current situation as far as

20:11 releasing new music? Do you guys have anything new you've been working on or

20:15 well, we've been talking about it a little bit. We're kind of putting

20:18 our twenty twenty four recording plan together right now. But we have we have

20:22 an album and a half of material that's in the kitty and almost ready to

20:27 go, a number of older tunes that some of them are sort of partially

20:32 recorded, we just haven't finished them yet. Yeah, we got to get

20:33 in to get those done. And then I've got a bunch of newer ish

20:38 stuff that's that's ready to go, So we got to get that polished up

20:42 and get into the studio. So we're trying to figure out how and where

20:45 to do that and see if we can get out as soon as we can.

20:47 It's going to be a busy summer. Yeah, yeah, good.

20:49 When you do record, you're going to be recording Where did you record the

20:53 material that we have for it on the show? Where where did you record

20:56 that? So most of it has been recorded at Woolly Mammoth Sound down in

21:00 Walltham with Dave Minihan. Oh, right, right, right, I remember

21:03 we talked about that, yeah, and this so the most recent album was

21:08 recorded at Willy Mammoth with Dave and then he did some pre engineering and it

21:15 came up here to Matt Blanchette, who's a Manchester guy. Yes, I've

21:22 interviewed Matt. Yeah yeah, and he's got Revelry Studio and he's got his

21:25 own little thing going on and he's a he's a great guy. So yeah,

21:27 he did kind of the final editing and production with us and on the

21:32 last batch of tunes. But the make Believe Celebrity that you heard was all

21:34 Dave. That was you know, ten plus years ago, and that was

21:37 all Dave wille Mammoth. Okay, so yeah, we'll see. I mean,

21:41 technology is changing, which has allowed us to change the way we record,

21:47 and uh, you know, it's interesting because it's you'd think you'd think

21:52 that it would allow people to do more home recording, and it has,

21:56 right. So a lot of these albums that here, a lot of the

21:57 stuff is being done in home studios, fixed somewhere else. But Dave down

22:02 at Woolley seems to be getting busier, right, So we're just trying to

22:06 figure out what's the most efficient way for us to do it right. Right.

22:08 It's often a mix of things. Yeah, no doubt, Well,

22:12 we should play another track? What should we play? Next. I don't

22:17 know if you remember what you sent me, but oh you know what,

26:41 I'm sure we talked about all this before, but for people who didn't

26:44 hear your previous appearance, what's the process like in terms of songwriting in the

26:48 band? Do you guys all write together or how does that work? Uh?

26:52 You know, I think it's sort of song by song. There are

26:55 many that uh, well, Low starts every song really yeah with the drums,

27:03 right, I start with the drums, and then I delete the bridge

27:07 and then and then we've got to hit this is sounding familiar? Yeah yeah,

27:11 yeah yeah, so uh but seriously, so you know, uh,

27:15 I kind of started as sort of a singer songwriter, kind of you know,

27:19 the acoustic guitar, and that's how a lot of my tunes start.

27:22 So uh and Mark who does some writing as well, same kind of deal.

27:25 So we'll we'll come up with sort of the core of the tune and

27:27 then at some point we bring it into the band and everyone sort of does

27:30 their thing, and sometimes it's really early and the whole thing is more of

27:33 a combined effort, and sometimes it just so happens that it's almost done when

27:37 we get it in, it's like, let's just fill in the pieces but

27:41 that that song had been around for a really long long time. That's the

27:45 way she likes it, and I always kind of wanted to do it.

27:47 Yeah, you know, the band, the sound of the band has evolved

27:49 a bit over the years, and it sort of felt like now is the

27:52 It was sort of a now or never in terms of getting it in.

27:53 And also, you know, I think the sound of the band has evolved

27:56 a little bit. You know, when we started off, it was,

27:57 uh, it was in the days of like you know, where Green Day

28:03 was still having hits like well their later albums, Yeah, and so like

28:08 you know, it was a little rockier and we've become more diverse, I

28:11 think, and so it felt like a good time to bring that tune in.

28:15 But uh yeah, so that's they often start that way and then then

28:18 we get together as a band and we sort of polish him up. And

28:21 truth be told, Carlo always cuts something and you know, insists on something

28:26 in the beginning of the end and cuts the bridge down or writes the bridge.

28:29 Well. You know, there's a lot of ideas in a song though,

28:30 you know, when you when you first start out creating a piece of

28:33 music, there's a lot of things that get thrown at you sure, and

28:37 not being you know, if Eric's coming up with the with the vibe of

28:42 what the song is like, you know, he's got a lot of things

28:45 in his head about how he feels it should sound. And then it's kind

28:48 of nice sometimes to get a fresh look at it, because you know,

28:52 you're just seeing so many things. But to be able to take out a

28:56 few pieces, you know, the whole lesson is more. Yeah. Times,

29:00 sometimes not all, but sometimes can make a difference in the tune,

29:03 and so it becomes very collaborative, you know, at that point, and

29:06 then you put a little frost thing on it. Next thing, you know,

29:07 you get a song. Yeah. I mean that song in particular,

29:11 as I recall, for a while had a very different groove to it actually

29:15 really yeah, And I don't know exactly when it happened, but at some

29:19 point in time we tried a different a different feeling toward it. And that's

29:23 what you that's what you just heard on the record. Yeah. Actually,

29:26 I think I think in the studio we played it two ways. I think

29:29 Dave had us play it two ways. That sounds familiar, and we think

34:13 Ocean in Salisbury, mass and Jenny and I are going to be there as

34:16 well. And of course you guys are opening for Barry Goodrow's engine room and

34:22 uh, looking forward to really looking forward to that. That's gonna be a

34:24 that's gonna be a cool night. Who else have you guys played with?

34:28 Who's uh? Like, is there anyone who really stands out bands that you've

34:31 shared the stage with? Yeah? Sure, Carl, what do you think?

34:37 Well, you know what just came Actually at this same venue we did

34:40 a show with what are you thinking? Uh? The one with the uh

34:47 Jefferson Starship start No, the other one, the recent one. Who oh?

34:52 The guests who yeah? Who oh? You guys played with them?

34:54 Yeah? Yeah, And you know what was interesting was I mean they're a

34:58 little be kind, they're a little older than us, but but there you

35:04 forget how much music they have. Yeah, their music is iconic. Oh

35:10 yeah, like it defined an entire generation. And it was really wild to

35:15 see them play that live. I mean it was yeah, that was that

35:17 To me, that was a you know, I don't want to say it

35:20 was like hearing the Beatles, but you know it was damn close. I

35:22 mean it was. They've got some really big, big songs that really lasted.

35:27 Well that was the sixties, right, yeah, sixties, early seventies.

35:30 Well, I know what you mean though, because they're a band that

35:32 they've got some some big hits that you probably most people probably don't realize who

35:37 it is really, you know, they hear that, they hear the songs,

35:40 and they know the songs. But if you were to ask them,

35:43 you know, if you were to say, you know, guess who that

35:45 artist is and they be like, you know, you could make a whole

35:50 uh sort of who's on first? Uh. That was a fun show we

35:54 we actually did. We did that one a little differently too. We didn't

35:58 do like a half acoustic kind of thing. Yeah, quasi acoustic, which

36:01 was cool. So I had a different, different feel to it. So

36:04 it was kind of it was kind of fun, but well, you know,

36:06 speaking of Blue Ocean. The other one, we did a Blue Oshan

36:07 which was recently just one and we might have mentioned this when we were here,

36:10 but we played with Kevin Bacon and the Bacon Brothers, and that was

36:15 like a full acoustic show because Kevin's more he's got a he's a pretty It's

36:19 kind of an eclectic mix of like, you know, country, jazz,

36:22 folks, blue grass, like the whole you know, a little bit of

36:25 rock, but just like all over the map and they so we were sort

36:30 of trying to be kind of in the in the same genre. So we

36:34 were mostly acoustic. Yeah, and some of the Unfortunately some of our tunes

36:37 translate pretty well acoustic. But that was a fun one too. And and

36:42 the thing that stood out to me though was the security. It's amazing.

36:45 You know. You think you go to a rock and roll show or a

36:47 music show and security is usually pretty tight. But you get a movie star

36:51 right and rights like you can't like, you know, they're tight here with

36:55 the coffee. I mean, it couldn't go like five feet down the hallway

37:00 and they're giving us a hard time. Oh no, kidding. Yeah,

37:02 we did give him a bottle of wine, which he was very appreciative,

37:07 but we couldn't hand it to him personally. Oh that's funny. It went

37:10 through the people, right through the people. But he gave us a nice

37:14 shout out. And that was a fun show too. That's an interesting dynamic

37:17 when you've got a band like that. That's you know, they're not like

37:22 the Bacon Brothers as an entity, is not like, uh, you know,

37:27 an arena act, you know what I mean. But on the other

37:31 hand, one of the guys happens to be an A list celebrity, so

37:35 that's interesting. Yeah, how does his brother feel, I know, well,

37:38 you know, his brother knows that they're getting gigs, right exactly.

37:42 Yeah, his brother is probably just fine with it, you know what I

37:45 mean. I mean, it's amazing to it because I think they sold out.

37:47 It's amazing they sold out. It was they actually put on a good

37:52 show that they had a list musicians. I mean, the cats that were

37:55 playing with them were top notch and they did a great job too. And

38:00 of course you know what you're waiting for when you're seeing the Bacon brothers,

38:04 and sure enough, you know, for the encore. I mean that was

38:07 that was the tune that they did Footloose, So which was I gotta say,

38:12 you know, having seen the movie, right, pretty iconic to see

38:15 Kevin Bacon singing Footloose on stage. Did he dance a little bit? Maybe?

38:20 I think he did a little bit a little someone up there. Because

38:23 he's going to go back to the high school that was filmed in I can

38:27 go to their last proms, for their last prom I think it's awesome,

38:34 so cool, right, Yeah, he seems like a really good guy.

38:38 Yeah, he seems human. He does exactly, and he stays pretty active

38:44 on social media too. He's I think he's doing regular, regular posts and

38:46 sort of like a glimpse of hit into the real life of Kevin Bacon.

38:51 His wife's a movie star too, Yeah, they both. I can't remember

38:53 who's he married to. Oh okay, yeah, okay, yeah, I

38:59 forgot about that. Wow. Well, yeah, I've heard that they're that

39:02 the Bacon Brothers are really good live. Who else, if any anybody else

39:09 our first big show was with Pat Benattar. We did a couple of

39:13 shows with her, I think. Yeah. We did a string of shows

39:16 with the Gin Blossoms, which was cool. Yeah. Vertical Horizon Yeah yeah,

39:22 yeah, that's really good. That that massive from the movie what does

39:30 was That was their follow up, which wasn't as big, a really big

44:43 this video in a day. We just missed it. We had to do

44:45 one slice of it live in a different, different venue, but most of

44:49 it was shot in a day in a high school with a cast, and

44:52 it was It was a lot of fun shooting it, and we got pretty

44:55 close to what we wanted. It turned out to be very entertaining. Nobody

44:58 got hurt. No one got hurt. That's what counts. That's that's the

45:00 important thing. Very very good. Well we've been talking about of course,

45:05 these guys are going to be live on Friday, April five at Blue Ocean

46:55 ugliest Subaru ever. It had fake wood paneling. Those are the best kind.
