4:18 Speaker 4: Yeah, we woke up to a winter wonderland that was just total not good. And today it's gonna be eighty degrees. So we're excited about that. Absolutely, let me get these mics up here because we've got the band The Doldrums here with us live in studio. Welcome, guys, what's going on? What's up? I love that song, pretty Girl? You know it's I really like your sound because your songs are they're very, very catchy, but also heavy, and not everyone can do catchy and heavy at the same time, you know what I mean.

5:01 Speaker 7: My name is Rob O'Neill. I am the lead singer and guitarist.

5:06 Speaker 8: Welcome, what's up, everybody? My name is tom Na Koja. I play bass and do backing vocals.

5:16 Speaker 9: Hello, I'm Brendan Lacenti. I play guitar and do backup vocals as well.

6:38 Speaker 4: Okay, okay, I don't know. I don't know Still Sleeping or Birds in Theory, but very cool, very cool. And then you guys playing out a lot, you're doing a lot of shows or what's what's kind of the live live situation?

6:49 Speaker 7: Like, I feel like we haven't been doing many shows as of recently. We've been kind of focusing on recording new music. Yeah, we got a music video coming out somewhat soon as well. Oh, we've had a lot of focus on writing and everything. But yeah, we're probably gonna try to book a lot more shows for the summer.

7:10 Speaker 6: It's for Why for Why?

7:11 Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, okay, and we're gonna play that. We'll play that in a few minutes. Yeah, very cool. Is this gonna be your first video as a band, your first music video or yeah.

7:22 Speaker 7: Yeah, we have some like teaser videos, but this is gonna be the first full one.

7:25 Speaker 4: Oh very good. Is it a concept or is it just you guys playing live or I don't know how much you want to divulge about it.

7:32 Speaker 6: Oh no, it's it's all good.

7:33 Speaker 7: Yeah, there's some concept we have who we call kind of our fifth member of the band, Devin Perry. He does our videos and he does our photography. Okay, so he also comes up with creative ideas for for videos. So it's kind of a little bit of an abstract idea. Yeah, we got a cool place over like in the Mills that we recorded in.

8:30 Speaker 11: Actually, I have one neighbor that's a little odd that will just spread them witches walk in the house and come down and hangs.

8:40 Speaker 4: Yeah, that's cool though. That's validation, right, Like to have a neighbor who wants to come and check out what you're doing, that's pretty cool.

8:51 Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. Now, the the tracks that we're playing today, are these from an album, from an EP or they just singles or because there's so many different ways now that artists are releasing music.

9:03 Speaker 6: Yeah, they're gonna be on an upcoming EP.

9:06 Speaker 4: Oh, so the EP is upcoming? Any idea when any kind of an ETA?

9:11 Speaker 7: So we we plan on releasing a single next Friday, and uh we we figured that, you know, may as well start plugging it here on the radio show.

9:22 Speaker 6: We haven't really talked about it much.

9:25 Speaker 7: The EP is going to be called the lunch Box EPA. And yeah, we're gonna be putting a single out. We don't have a release date quite yet for the actual EP itself. We're gonna start we're gonna start pushing that. What's the single, the single It's Gonna be Freaking Me out?

9:43 Speaker 4: Oh right, right right, okay, yes, yes I have I have a version of that are prepared that we can play on the show YEP.

9:51 Speaker 6: Version. Yeah, very cool.

9:55 Speaker 4: When I was listening to these, like I said, you know earlier, like I said at the end of Pretty Girl, you know, your songs are heavy, but they're catchy. And I really like that because, like I said, you know, most bands they try to kind of be one or the other, you know, and and so you got I mean it sounds like, you know, really a lot of effort, Like who are the songwriters in the band? Because it's it's it sounds like you really put like you think about the craft of songwriting and it shows in your music, Like who writes the songs or do you all write together?

10:22 Speaker 6: Yeah?

10:22 Speaker 9: Yeah, all this stuff on the EP has been pretty much written by everybody at the same time.

10:29 Speaker 4: Yeah.

10:30 Speaker 6: Yeah, we have a pretty big hand in it.

10:32 Speaker 4: No, that's great, that's great.

10:34 Speaker 3: I do.

10:34 Speaker 8: I will give credit where credit is due. Rob comes up with incredible melodies right out the jump. We we we come up with a riff idea and the rest of us are jamming it out and he just sings gibberish the first time around, but he always gets an awesome melody right out the jump. So we always where we we videotape ourselves practicing. Yeah, so we can come back to that and make sure we don't lose that melody.

10:57 Speaker 1: You know.

10:58 Speaker 4: That's that's a smart thing. I was in a band. This was a long time ago. I was in a band called First Shove, and we had we had a couple of songs that we were trying to work on one day at practice and like we we found ourselves actually forgetting parts to one of them. And it was a conversation. There was a conversation about maybe we should start recording, you know, because we would tend to write at our rehearsals. It would kind of be you know, we'd practice if we had shows, but we'd also write stuff at the same time, and and uh, yeah, there was a point where we were actually forgetting things and it's like, oh, that's really bad.

11:27 Speaker 6: Yeah.

11:27 Speaker 12: Yeah, that's why we always do some sort of a video.

11:31 Speaker 8: Yeah, And we have a shared Google drive too, so we we always post up those. Every one of the songs that we've ever written has like fifteen different versions on video of the progression towards you know, the finished product.

11:44 Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a really good idea. Yeah, that's really smart. It helps. Yeah, definitely. You guys want to play another song, another track? Yeah? Yeah, so what should we do next? We want to go why next?

11:55 Speaker 6: Yeah, we can do Why.

11:57 Speaker 4: Okay, that's a good one we had talked about. Now, was this the first single?

12:01 Speaker 9: Yeah, that was the first one that we released at the beginning in like February or March of twenty twenty four. Okay, the version that we're hearing now is going to sound a little different than the one that we were released.

12:13 Speaker 12: Oh really drums, oh entirely.

12:15 Speaker 10: Oh, no, credit recorded some stuff.

12:18 Speaker 4: Oh cool, okay, okay, And I'm just I'm always so curious about this kind of thing. Well, why did you decide to do that? What did they just not come out so well?

12:26 Speaker 10: The songs with Eric at Blackhearts sound.

12:29 Speaker 4: Oh Erics So his name, Yeah, his name comes up on the show almost on a weekly basis.

12:35 Speaker 8: Literally one of the coolest people on the planet.

12:37 Speaker 4: Absolutely, Eric.

12:39 Speaker 11: Yeah, but we did three songs with them, and then we're like, you know, maybe let's go back and do a couple more and then when we started doing the other three that are going to be on the EP, the drum sound was just so different, really, and it sounded so much better, and we were like, you know what, let's let's make it that way. It's all consistent. Yeah, and it just came out so much better.

12:57 Speaker 9: We learned a lesson there, which would be, if we I think we're not going to just do three songs, we might as well just do it all at once. And then that way, folks, ye to do it to day here, day here, day here. You just get a week and do it all at once.

16:18 Speaker 4: I love it? That is so good? That is called Why. And by the way, that is why not just the letter why if you're wondering. The band is the Doldrums. And we've got the band the Doldrums here with us alive in studio on this Saturday morning here at w M n H. And uh yeah, I love that track. That is really good, really really good. Do you guys how many how many songs do you guys have? Like, do you have additional songs that you play live that that are not yet recorded or not yet recorded?

16:48 Speaker 8: No, there are additional songs that we do play live. There was actually, well, there was a previous release from the band before me, Tom and the drummer Rob were in the band. They had a a I think it was what a four track of five track?

17:05 Speaker 9: Yeah, we had a there was a previous iteration that were me and Rob singer Rob, and we released a four song EP with a couple of guys back in twenty twenty.

17:18 Speaker 7: Yeah, twenty twenty. Yeah, we started the band of twenty eighteen. That's before we had these new handsome gentlemen here Tom and drummer. Uh yeah, so twenty eighteen and then like we kicked out a couple of members because see not good people.

17:34 Speaker 4: Oh, and then we.

17:36 Speaker 12: Had a hiatus sound for a while.

17:38 Speaker 4: Sounds like there's a story there.

17:39 Speaker 6: Oh, there's definitely a story there with a long story.

17:42 Speaker 4: One you can tell or probably not. Probably I would I would go with probably, yeah, probably.

17:48 Speaker 15: I'm always looking for the dirt always maybe not on air, yeah, always looking for the for the dirt, but you know, off air dirt is the next best thing, yeah selfishly.

17:58 Speaker 4: Okay. By the way, so where does a name come from? The Doldrums.

18:04 Speaker 6: It's like a I came up with it.

18:07 Speaker 7: I mean like twenty eighteen when I started the bands, I like heard of the word and I was like, that would make a cool band name. It's like the the meaning of doldrums is like the part of the ocean where like boats like can't there's no wind.

18:22 Speaker 6: There's like no wind, so they kind of sink stuck in place.

18:25 Speaker 4: I didn't know that was the etymology of the term. Yeah.

18:28 Speaker 7: So it's kind of like people say like I'm in the doldrums, meaning like you know, they're almost like being like depressed, no progress yeaheah okay, which is.

18:36 Speaker 10: A bunch of sad boys.

18:37 Speaker 9: Yeah yeah, yeah, a fitting fitting name.

18:41 Speaker 6: Yeah yeah yeah.

18:42 Speaker 4: I mean, well, I don't know. The music's pretty high energy now. It's not like I didn't. I didn't know quite what to expect when I saw the name of the Doldrums. I thought it might be punk. I thought it might be like, you know, kind of more stoner metal. I don't know, how do you guys describe for people who haven't heard heard your sound, Like, how do you how do you describe it?

18:58 Speaker 12: That's really I don't think we know any difficulty.

19:01 Speaker 7: That's why it makes it like, Yeah, I at least personally have a lot of like garage rock influence. Yeah, so I kind of like try to show that in the band. I think we have some of that sound in there. Yeah.

19:13 Speaker 11: Yeah, it's really hard, but it kind of like started off as like surface supposed to be.

19:17 Speaker 10: Like when I joined the band, I was kind of metal drummer.

19:23 Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm a very heavy drummer, and they were looking for that. And I think when I joined the band, I kind of got away from the surf punk thing, and I think we just kind of meshed.

19:32 Speaker 8: Yeah, so I do think we still dip back into the surf punk surf punk roots every once in a while.

19:37 Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, I mean I can hear that. I can hear that mix of influences, and I can actually imagine you guys doing a surf punk song, you know. Yeah, yeah, I can hear that.

19:47 Speaker 11: And I think that's why it's it's so like, you know, we have some tracks that are very heavy and then they're very melodic. Yeah, like we we kind of just thrive off each other with that.

19:55 Speaker 4: Yeah. So is there anybody in the area that you guys play a lot of shows with, you know, it kind of happens organically sometimes fans a lot of shows.

20:05 Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, definitely Geers Okay, Yeah, but I mean, honestly, we haven't played that many live shows overall. Yeah, it's it's we we We've spent a lot of time on this EP.

20:21 Speaker 16: Yeah.

20:22 Speaker 8: Yeah, going into the studio and getting these recordings.

20:25 Speaker 4: Yeah. What's interesting about you guys doing a lot of shows with the Regels is obviously they have a very different sound than you. Yeah, but but they're interesting too, and that they've got like a real like you can hear a lot of different influences in their music as well. Absolutely great and it's but yeah, they are so good. It was just the well we had them on the show. It was just the two guys came in and played live. But it was it was so good, I bet. But we saw them. We met them at the Shasking Jenny and I did, uh originally right, it was that was the first time we'd met them, right, the Shasking that night.

20:55 Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, because Jenny's son, Jesse was playing there Jesse Coffee, and uh that was Yeah, that was the first time we'd met Regals and it was like, wow, I don't know if it was the full Oh no, wait, didn't we meet them before that at Mosaic Mosaic Arts Studio. That was the full band that was playing that night. Yeah. Yeah, but they're uh, they're really really good. What are what are kind of the long term plans as far as you guys, are you looking to tour? Like do you were? I know you haven't played a ton of shows yet, but are you looking to to kind of get on the road or what's what's really talked about touring?

21:28 Speaker 8: We are submitting for a contest with this music video that we just made, and I mean the prize being a stage at Warped Tour like playing at war So I mean fingers crossed obviously a.

21:42 Speaker 4: Little bit of a try.

21:46 Speaker 6: I believe we can do it.

21:47 Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I believe you can too. That would be cool. I can imagine you guys have warped to her definitely. Yeah, you want to play the what do you want to play next? We should play another one?

21:56 Speaker 8: We should play the single out for Friday. Yeah, so this will this will be the first time anybody's hearing.

22:37 Speaker 8: Freaking me out? Probably heavier than every other one of our songs.

22:41 Speaker 9: Definitely weirder, definitely also considerably weirder, kind of all over the place.

22:46 Speaker 8: But a little bit of a Latin beat in there, a little bit of a circus gem Okay, yeah, yeah.

22:55 Speaker 6: It's got a little bit of everything, to be honest.

22:58 Speaker 12: Okay, definitely a strange one.

23:00 Speaker 4: Okay. And what went into the decision to make this the next single? Any any method to that or do you just really like the track.

23:06 Speaker 10: It's how it always happens.

23:07 Speaker 11: We were in the studio and I get done with my parts, and all of a sudden, they go, well, we.

23:12 Speaker 10: Got a little bit of time, you want to maybe try to lay down some drum tracks for this, And I'm like, oh, we'll see if we do. And then all of a sudden, it just became like our favorite.

23:20 Speaker 8: Every yeah, yeah, yeah, every song becomes our new favorite song.

23:25 Speaker 9: Right right, Yeah, But we're also like pushing what like the envelope of what we've been doing with each new song, Like everything's been getting weirder and crazier. We're kind of finding our sound a little more, especially with the songs that we're working on now, Like I'm starting to come into place, and so this one definitely we all were like, this rules all.

Yeah, his Like I said earlier, his name comes up on the show all the time. How did how did you guys come to work with him? Or had you worked with him before the CP or Yeah?

29:47 Speaker 9: So the first in the original uh iteration back in twenty eighteen, me and Rob had gone to him when he basically just first opened Black Heart in the building that he has now, Yeah, and we did, we started recording a whole album, and then we took that little hiatus and we came back did the four songs that we actually released with him. Yeah, and then I mean, since then, it's just yeah, it's just we're always gonna go back.

30:14 Speaker 4: Yeah. I was gonna say, like, why would you even want to work with anybody else?
