Field Dispatch
Matt Connarton Unleashed: The Mighty Suicide Squirrels
We've got a great band with us in studio. We've got the guys from
the Mighty Suicide Squirrels live in studio with us. How you doing, guys?
Happy Halloween? Yes, Happy Halloween. Why don't we start with you,
sir? And just if you can each tell us who you are and
what you do in the band. How's it going, guys. I'm Jared
Palmerlow. I'm the drummer for the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. It's a pleasure to
be here, all right. I'm Trevor laes On, the singer. I
also play guitar. I write all the songs, do all the talking.
I annoy all the people. There he is now, I'm Kevin Bastin.
I'm the bass player. Do some little singing here and there too. Yeah,
yeah, a little bit, very good, very good, very simple,
very as simple as you can be for a band. Have you,
guys always been Has it always been the three of you for this band?
Yeah? Yeah, Me and him have always stuck together for his lines has
been music. It's been me and him. Oh. So you guys have
been in a lot of bands? Yeah, not a lot, just one
other one. Yeah, like the last eight years. Yeah, yeah,
okay, Yeah, this is more of a new project for us. It's
only been going on for about a year and a half. Yeah, we're
a little bit, but we're pushing it. We're pushing it hard. Yeah.
I already made a bunch of music, so we're ready. Yeah,
we got a we got a bunch of tunes we're gonna play today. Really
looking forward to sharing these with everybody. By the way, so I have
to ask this right out of the gate, where does the name come from?
Uh? Started out, they just started out as a joke, and
then we had this really ongoing long name, and then it was just like,
let's just cut it down. We'll just be Yeah, we'll just be
the Squirrels, and we're ready to go with that. It just was really
added nothing we didn't expect to be doing anywhere. Might I was gonna say,
you didn't cut it down that much, not that much just now and
talking easier to say the squirrel right right. But yeah, it just came
as a joke. We didn't expect to be playing anything nearly as my whuch
as we are. We're playing way more than we thought would be really.
Yeah, yeah, so we're pretty much every weekend we're out. We really
tried this year to push ourselves and get ourselves out there, and it really
showed everything just even just being like everywhere from wester to Boston to Nashua,
Connectian, Rhode Island, Maine. Ya been all over the place. Yeah,
Ohio, Ohio next month. Yeah. Yeah. Started as a joke,
just trying to just keep the music going for me and him. Yeah,
and we taught him a bunch of cover songs and then just kind of
make short songs. So it was just here we go, let's make a
bunch of short songs and then just punks just rock yea, the simplest songs
you can imagine, you know. Do the songs come pretty easy? Yeah,
they're not bad. It depends on how I feel. For the most
part, a lot of like like my emotional like journal coming coming to life
type deal. So it's it's pretty good. None of them are really like
positive, so it's all, you know, it's like dismal, miserable,
you know. I mean, we do have happy and happy. It sounds
happy, but it's not. But yeah, I don't know. If I
have something to be happy about, i'd write a happy song. There must
be a happy one in there somewhere. I mean, you're not happy about
it. There's a couple, Yeah, there's a couple of good there's a
couple of ones, but they're like a skew and astray, you know,
they're strange or inappropriate. Yeah, you know, just about your lifely,
your daily struggles and daily struggles in life is what we're really hitting our songs.
Besides like the few fun ones. It's yeah, it's just all about
life. Where are you guys from? Are you from around here? Are
you from here? We're from athol Masks Okay, yeah, we're all uh
like branched apart, you know, but we practice an athought so we're pretty
much not too far from Atho, you know as Alost, like an hour
and twenty minutes from here. About that. Yeah, it's not It's really
not that bad to get no bad. I'm just laughing because that for the
name of a town or a city. I've always thought that's such a funny
sounding name, at least like a river, a river, rat race,
and everyone calls it rat hole, you know really Yeah, yeah, we
used to call it the rat hole. Yeah, going to the rat hole.
That's what I've always known it you're not really going anywhere pleasant. There's
there's nothing good there. Hey where it's a little better, a little better.
I mean, we do have to say we go for those listening we
are probably at all premiere punk rock band. There you go, there you
go. All right, you know we are probably the elite of the elite
out there. You might be other than the rats in the sewer, you
might be the premiere band from there. You know, you're right, maybe
an original band, but there's probably you know, the cover band's probably got
but an original band's cover band. Right, We're not here for covers.
We're here for originals. Is that a it's a city? Is it a
tower city? Is it considered a town? Say it's a town. It's
an up and coming town. It's very close to a city, I would
say, almost, well probably now yeah, but close, it's very close.
Yeah. Well, all right, they got enough to do with all,
like the new stuff they've put into that. That's all I know.
I got more than winching in, that's for sure. Uh, Isaac Banks
and the chat room is asking the mighty suicide squirrels, who are your influences?
Oh? Oh, A lot of It's like bart relusion Misfits, definitely
miss Its, yeah, Dedans, descendence effects, you know, Offspring,
I definitely we've got a good offspring sound, operational, just for the simplicity,
insane. I don't know. I feel like we relate to a lot
of bands just because we're very simple all over. A lot of it's really
three or four chords. Yeah, yeah, you know, so it's very
simple. Yeah. How many songs have you guys recorded? Twenty? That's
pretty good. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, we're just like they said,
they really were just released our second album October twentieth. Oh yeah,
our second album just came out. Yeah, oh very cool. Wow,
that's that's very album modify whatever called nuts in your face? Yeah and squirrels.
Yeah that that makes sense. Yeah, that's what they eat, right
yeah yeah when when when I thoughd that? What's that first one called the
Greasy Potato? Oh yeah yeah yeah, yeah you forgot I did, Yeah,
don't. I don't know what that means, but it sounds like something.
If I looked it up on Urban Dictionary, I would find something horrifying.
Maybe, well yeah, to do that, but I'm sure if you
did look it up, yeah, something cool actually something we're all missing out
on. Yeah, I don't know. Well, let's, uh, let's
play a track. What do you guys, I'll let you guys pick of
the uh well, who's who sent them? You know, so you know,
you know what you sent of the the tracks. So I don't know,
let's go falling Apart, Falling Apart? Okay, kick off? I
like, yeah, that's probably the best one to listen to. All right,
we'll give this a spin. So this is uh, the Pride of
athol Mas. I'm I even saying that correctly. Yeah, say the other
way I was gonna say. I'm kind of afraid to mispronounce. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, you want to say that way. But I don't got
a list, you know, because I want to be able to come back
tomorrow. But no, but yeah, I've always thought that was a funny
name. All right, So let's give this a listen. This is Falling
Apart from the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. Well, we'll listen to this and then
we'll come back and talk with these guys some more. Check us out.
Say no cat wag and not wag starting the boor doun can today, So
say today die man, when my way, when fog say the blaze,
I'm flog the what a time flag? When the time slave you right Noway?
What happens in the bag? What my name is? Something that is
not gast that happy away? Why God go to working today? I mean
so so the progress they say, I'm gone that hold my rock it up?
What a way do Sonny makes five? Fun? A way? Does
it may be better? Sign? He done it? Fill up? Got
me? No, well that's done? You met walla way you until you're
rating? Thanks and then drum Walloway so on the ball and every day Yeah
what what sn like? Get gotten a game? I'm doing sun Red that
is falling apart. That is the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. And we have them
live in studio with us. By the way. DJ Reckless never came back.
But but you guys, you guys Ran I think he was like,
I don't want to deal with those. He's not what we were doing.
He was like, last time there was someone drunk on there, we don't
want to deal with them. It was like, we have Trevor, Kevin
and Jared from the band here with us in studio. By the way,
so I'm looking at your band camp and uh, there's another gentleman here,
mikey Lemire back up vocal. Oh yeah, he came to the studio with
us. He did one song. It's on band camp, isn't it the
one song? Isn't it right? Yeah? Yeah, like every song.
I can't help filling there, but yeah there. So he's not an official
member of the band, obviously good. It's awesome when he's around. He's
a really good singer. He's awesome. Yeah. Yeah, he just makes
this sound better. He does what I can't do. He does. He's
good to sing with. He knows the songs, he does, he does
the work. It's just it's hard to get a hold of him. He's
one of those kind of people I understand. Yeah, And where do you
guys record? Choose it? Be doing it? How to watch us?
To recording studio with Princeton Mass with a Roger. We have a call,
we'll grab this. I think somebody wants to talk to you guys. Turn
down your radio please. Oh I think they hung up a click Hi,
anybody there? Nope, they hung Well that's probably that's probably the best thing
that we got. That's probably good. It's probably like Mike. It's probably
like my grandma, my sister, I hope be like hello, same person,
trying again, let's se what we get here? Hi? Welcome?
Hello? Who's this like? Oh my god, I'm sorry. Hold on,
I'm trying to Okay, here we go. Hi, who's on the
one? I don't know what? I don't know? Show my support?
Thank you? Who are who are you? You know these guys? I'm
Jared and Mike Lemire's fiance. Yeah, all right there right now out trick
or treating. Well, no, not yet, we're about to be.
But my brother told me I wouldn't call, and I said, watch me
here. You are there you and I'm also representing from Athol. I'm there
currently. We've heard a lot about that that place already today. Yeah,
yeah, lovely right right. I mean it's come a long way. We
all have to say. That's what we all have to say. It's only
come a long way because it was a rat a rat hole it was,
yeah it was. But now win is the worst? Throw it out there?
Pretty bad? When is that like a couple of towns grew up?
Okay, they're not missing much. There's like farms and don't even have a
grocery stuff there not anymore? Well they don't need a grocery sources farms right
there. Yeah, you would think you would think, Wow, yeah,
we got five pizza places. You're not missing much. It's typical town.
It's funny. It's a travel town. That's the thing though. No matter
how small a town is, there will always be hats. Yeah, if
you don't have pizza, you have? What do you have? I think
that has like seven of them. They have a McDonald's cafe we got yeah,
yeah, but you go to Wendy's. Hey, where's Mikey. He's
at work. Do you got anything to say about Mikey? Give him?
Give him something for Mikey Amy. We all love Mikey. Dude, Mikey
is the most amazing person I have ever met. And he, Oh my
god. I wish he did have more time to be able to play with
you guys more so do we Definitely? No, he and he Oh my
god. I love seeing you guys perform live, especially when he's with you.
It's great. He really knows how to work the crowd. Yes he
does. Does he do more than one song with you? Or if us?
Cool? He plays most okay? Yeah, he's just the perfect element
to like, you know, he's like the spice. You're like, oh
we got Mikey tonight. There's a Littlerazi dazzle. If we don't, well
then you just get sorry, but you just get us. We're gonna kill
it, but you just get us. But yeah, he just's he's very
very talented at singing. So it's like when he's with us, it's just
like, oh yeah, next level. Yeah yeah, it just really yeah,
And I don't have to sing so much, so it sounds that much.
The less I sing, the better we sound, you know. But
that but I sing it. I sing it all. So you know,
you don't have a choice. This is what it is, you know.
Yeah, but you know what, at least you're good on the guitar,
So that's all right. Say that. No one else is ever going to
save that. Say that. Take that, take that You're welcome are yeah
yeah yeah, yeah, yeah right, I'm all lubed up. That's that's
for a different that's a different show. I love it. Well, we
appreciate the call. Anything else you want to say about these guys or to
these guys, or I think that one of their biggest fans just want to
say hi, real quick, go ahead, hey, guys make up.
Oh very nice, very nice, which is also he's got the talented up
and coming drum he's up and coming drummer. Yeah, making me proud.
I love it. Very good. Yeah, excellent. Well all right,
but yeah we have to head out to trigger treating anyways. But lots of
candy kids. Oh yeah, Amy, all right, thank you for the
call, Amy, be safe, no problem, all right, by all
right, very nice, cool nice one. The family supports that. Yeah.
Yeah, So I started to ask about where you guys record because everything
sounds really good. So what's the recording. It's in Princeton, mass Okay,
uh, engineers Roger Lavalley. Excellent guy, does great work. Yeah
yeah. Prices are good, very fair. Yeah, it's nice. It's
like you're just basically going into someone's house. It's kind of like just like
a studio apartment. Okay, yeah, right behind the santique shop. Yeah
it's nice though. Yeah, he's got a ton of equipment, he's got
everything you can eat. You don't really even have to bring anything if you
don't want to show up and play. A very nice place, really good
pizza place right up the street. I will say, yeah, Now,
how did you get connected with him, working with him. How did that
come about? Honestly, just Google recording there. Yeah, we know a
couple of bands we know also, I believe went there. Yeah, Michael
came in the morning after, so I don't know if anybody's ever heard of
them. Yeah, out of Western and then and he lashly did some stuff
there too. You know, a couple of people it's like I can think
of off the top of my head. Yeah, but yeah, it's worked
out really well. It's very easy going, very fair price. Yeah,
very good guys, very easy going. Yeah, and he obviously understands what
you guys are. Yeah. You just sounds a general idea, even if
you're not sure, you just be like, we kind of want to sound
like this band, or we want to kind of sound like this band.
Yeah, sound that, and he'll he'll get you there. Yeah, you
know. Yeah. Because it was so often a you know, a recording
engineer, it kind of becomes like a de facto producer too. You know,
in a way you kind of gotta especially if you're kind of just like
throwing the music at him, you got to have someone who's kind of like,
we got to build it. You need someone to build the music for
you if you haven't like fully constructed it. It's a good way of thinking
about He did everything, he recorded it, he mixed, he mastered it.
Yeah, pretty much everything was a song album, one one, one
day. Yeah, our first album as one studio take. Yeah, by
time we done it was fully mastered. Yeah. Wow that's fast. Yeah.
But we don't want yeah experience. We don't want to be like overdubbed
and sound like something that we're not. Yeah. We want our music to
sound like us when we play. Yeah, yeah we're not. We don't.
We don't you know. Yeah, we're what we are. Yeah.
Yeah, we're just human. Simple. I don't know if you're human.
We're just simple. Yeah. And the studio is harder for us, I
think because we're not really a studio band. We're just we're more of a
live band. We need the energy or for the fun and each other.
We just go for it. We have a blast. We're just here for
the entertainment. We don't necessarily play perfect, you know, but we just
have fun and that's what we're there for instead of like trying to nail every
single. No, that's definitely not happening. You know. There's reason you
can have fun and joke with each other with it. That's that's all.
Yeah, we get we get the people going and engaged in the show and
have Usually we have more crowd engagement than most, you know, And that's
what we're there for. It's what I'm there for. There for the fun.
Let's just have fun. Yeah. Now, when you record, do
you got do you go in and play live together? We play all together.
Yeah, we go in and usually what we do before we go record,
we'll go to Jared's house and we'll practice for a month without singing any
work. Oh yeah, yeah, we have a silent practice because there.
Yeah, you just play the music first and then then you go to the
studio with bang them out one or two takes. Yeah, right, it
feels really good. Yeah. This time we had Mikey saying in a separate
booth in a different room and that went really well. Yeah, that helped.
It's if you get on the vocals, it's key because half the times,
after a while you kind of tune out from the music and your you're
more focused on the words of of what's going on. So you focused on
a couple of words of all right, now I should make the change right
here. That's why I'm changing. And when you take that out, you're
kind of like you're a lost all because yeah, you're like, this part's
happened. I was expecting this, or I was expecting that right now.
You guys, prior to this album, you've recorded other things. Have you
recorded everything? Uh? At that the same studio, everything's been done with
the same studio, the same engineer for the Squirrels. Yeah, the same
person, same studio, same place. Cool like him, Yeah, he's
good. He's right near us, so there's no reason to go somewhere else.
Although now they say that they are making a place and I think Roger's
going to be moving there and withst there, so we'll be doing it like
in his backyard. Oh wow, like in a barn or something. I
think it's the barn in its backyard. Yeah, so you know, it
makes more sense for him. You can just do right at home. So
that'll be cool. But well we'll still be going to the same person.
A lot of a lot of bands in that area too, in Worcester,
so that makes sense. Yeah yeah, well yeah exactly. Yeah, you
got to go where the music is, yeah, absolutely, Yeah, he's
in a decent place to get to everybody. But it's not like it's easy
to get to everybody. By the way, the Prodigal Son has returned.
DJ Reckless is here back. I got locked out? You did? Yeah,
I didn't give you the code? How'd you get in? There was
somebody else coming in? No. I looked at my messages, found the
code that was spent to me like months ago. Okay, there you go,
there you go. Yeah. I was checking my phone in case you
had gotten locked out. I was like, I wonder if he messaged me,
But I don't don't know why I didn't think too. But well,
we were worried that because I heard you ran into the band scaredy off?
All right, until them at my stomping grounds. Yes, yes, at
the six o three six three, Yes, yes, indeed. Well,
I think we should play another track. What should we uh? What should
we hear next? Gentlemen, I kind of feel like listening to my baby,
Let's do it. But you gotta just blur out that one where this
one's a little bloozy. Well he sent me a clean version, Yes,
the one, the one, oh, the one we talked about earlier.
Yeah, it'll be all right. It's in. It's in the lyrics.
I'm not I'm not too worried. So yeah, he's not worried. We're
not worried. I mean, if, h if for some reason I'm suddenly
worried, I can always hit the delay. But I don't. I don't
think. I don't think it'll be a problem. I don't think it'll be
a problem. I don't either. All right, so let's check this out.
This is my baby, and this is the mighty suicide squirrels. I'm
sus hey, my baby, you love me? Yet? Tell me the
god? She said up to see you later, suca. Yeah, see,
don't money anymore? Son, me on my hat up me, I
mean nothing testing hummies and now dad not molly, Ya caught you not to
go man to look at me? Yes, fluck that door. That boy,
I can't take you no more. Now I've got I'm gonna house that
covered inside. He's got none everything called me. You have a prime mine,
man of my big honey? What ut man? My mother? Honey?
But take it all back out? They call you. You have my
baby, don't love me? You not springing me down? This be ug
lady. Man, you gotta call me right out. So no, man,
I'm about because singing mumbling while I'm in rementing you with pleas ac on
you. Yes, that is my baby by the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. And
we've got the guys from the band here in studio with us. CJ.
Reckless is here as well at the news desk. Yes, yes, and
you guys are getting some love in the Facebook live chat Adam Jocelyn from the
band Able Blood. I don't know if you know. Yeah, we're playing
with them soon. Oh very good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
we're playing with them in December the seventh or something. He also Ralph.
He also owns some bake goods, so just be paying. If you
guys go to Raus there's gonna be bake goods brought to you by Adam.
Oh very nice. Nice yea. He made a post saying who do I
got to bake for? We answered the call. Very good. The Squirrels
will be looking forward to some bake goods by Adam. Definitely all right.
Sometimes you know, we make a lot of things happen. We don't even
don't even mean to. If you just manifest me make some shows, just
just work for people to be like, oh, we want to play here,
we want to play here, and it's like, do will make it
happen? We'll just do it and then here we go. Let's just let's
just send it excellent. We'll be in wester on Friday night at the Raven.
We're gonna be at the Raven. Yeah, yeah, we don't we
don't play up here too much. In Manchester. We don't know too many
venus or places, but we'd love to. Yeah, I love yeah.
If anyone knows, help us out a lot of good places. Yeah,
yeah, he says. Adam said, uh, squirrels are awesome, so
he's yeah, he's digging, digging you. Yeah, it's gonna be a
good show. We got a bunch of our that's like all our friends,
a bunch of friends. Yeah, so that's gonna be cool, excellent,
it's gonna be cool and forward to it. And our friend Ronda Faverro from
California, she was saying, let me back up to that. Whoa listen
to that kick ass riff? Oh yeah I like that too. Yeah,
absolutely, Jenny says, baking that's my language. Oh yeah, yeah,
yeah. Sometimes that's all you need a little warmth and you get to show,
you know, there you go. I'll take some brownies there, some
banana bread. Adam says they're getting muffins. Oh all right, I like
I'll take some muffins. Yeah. Yeah, I'm not yeah, yeah,
but I'm just happy. Yeah. That's more than we normally get for shows.
Let's go. We're gonna be hungry. Oh I'm gonna be dipping them
in soy sauce at ralph Really we come downstairs Jared and I from Ralph's one
night, those kids downstairs at the bar dipping hot dogs and barbecue sauce and
soy sauce and eating them And that's awful. Why would you do that?
We were in a moment. Oh god, we're here for the moments.
We're here at a party. Oh boy, that's yeah. Alex the salt
is is Oh yeah Alex, Yeah, Alex Tombstone. I'm sorry, Is
that just say I don't even know read my son? Yes, he says,
Hi Trevor from your son, Yeah yeah, my son, Yeah yeah,
trading Tombstone like them? Yeah yeah, yeah. I'm gonna see them
Saturday at Swarmy Fast, I believe. Yeah. Yeah, that's a big
thing going on. Hell yeah, absolutely. Yeah, they're They're one of
my favorites from around here. I love Alex. Alex is good. Yeah,
yeah, there are people my son. Yeah, no, no,
where's my banana? Alex? Oh? Yeah, yeah, the banana.
You're lucky. The banana's not here, Alex. He's listening. I know
he's listening. What does everybody give you guys? Food? What do you
mean? No? Noa this big ball banana? Yeah, okay, yeah,
that's my friend. We had We had to sign a binding contract not
to touch the banana anymore. Sure. Sure, well that's uh, that's
good. Considered it broken? Yeah yeah, help or So we had a
good inflatable party the other day with him. It was good, it was
good. And why is how did he become your son? It was just
kind of like a joke at first, but there was just like I forget
where, but like I talk. I ended up talking to Alex a lot.
I'm pretty sure it was. And then it was just like I'm older
than him. So he called me like his some one day and was like,
well, I'm old in you, I can't be your son. So
I was like, you gotta be like my son now. So now he's
my son. Yeah, yeah, and it works out good because like sometimes
we'll talk a lot and then it's like we'll go a very long time and
then we don't talk. So it's like a dream relationship with you. You
know, I remember, I'll remember his birthday next year. I promised him
that, so we'll see about that. You don't have to pay for him
to go to college or anything. I don't have to do anything. I
mean he's past college. Ok. Yeah, yeah, he's older now.
You know, Mom did good, Thank you mom. Yeah, you know,
this is what we're doing. He's following, following my my steps.
You know, he might be in the studio the radio station soon here.
Yeah, ninety's going to be here soon. Maybe he said he was in
the talk, So yeah, I hope. So what better to see to
see? Get the young the young buck? You know right, right,
you've you've paid, you've paid the way for him to write, right.
I made it easier for him to get here with my steps through the snow.
You know, I broke down the bank and that's right, that's right,
boy, he says, I love you guys. Yeah, we always
have good fun. Yeah, yeah, it's been good. We've only really
I've only hung out with them a few times. But he's like one of
those few people that like when you meet him, yeah, it just clicks
and it works. I still keep in touch. I've been talking to him
all the time. I was talking to him earlier yesterday, know a lot
about this, even just being on here. Yeah, because he's from here
too, so it's like, yeah, yeah, you had to hit up
the people who Yeah, the one time we played New Hampshire, we played
with him. Oh okay, oh yeah Hampshire, get us back. Where
where was that at the National Garden? Oh okay, yep, I guess
it's no longer playing music really. I feel like lay the last show there.
I guess. Oh there's one spot down there that's doing live music,
like now sure, yeah, yeah, I'm not sure they're gotta be everywhere.
You just got to know. Oh yeah, yeah. We just played
at Top Shelf with Andy Ryan. Yeah, right down the street, Ragged
the Stitches, yeah, and out in the basement no kidding, yeah,
the base. Yeah, we guess we're ran late. The old guy Sales
came down, started screaming at it and we went to Yeah. Yeah,
we had a big party. It was so much I've seen those parties man,
and I'm like, wow, yeah, yeah, we're supposed to be
don It was like elaven. The guy come downstairs screaming at us, what
do you want? I mean, we're everyone's having so much fun that the
night was so good. I remember when Alehouse was right next to there.
Oh man, it was ruthless times, roofless times. Man. Yeah,
I don't know, especially on the weekend. It's just like you need some
tattoos. Go see, yeah, you need tattoo. I don't know anymore.
Man, we're gonna everybody. So what happened when the when the guy
came down and started what was he like, just an upstairs neighbor he owns.
I'm not too sure, but I'm pretty sure that's what supposed to be
a ten o'clock curve oclock curfew. And it went by, but it ended
fine. Everyone to stop. We were there. We smoothed it over.
Yeah. Yeah, I came running. I came running downstairs and I was
like, guys, guys, we gotta stop. This old guy's gonna want
to shut down the next day. And then it was good to go next
next day and they Andy said he was like I ran tight ship. I
made sure that that went down ten o'clock. No, nothing, nothing past
it. Yeah, which you gotta do that. You know, you got
to have the respect of the course. You always got to have respect for
where you're playing. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, Well we should play another
song. Let's do it. What happened we played yet? What do you
guys want to Oh? We got happy at home. Let's play some happy
happy Yeah. Now you were saying, now, is this actually a happy
song? Because you were saying earlier you don't really have a no, you
can tell me, but yeah, sounds good. All right, here it
is. This is called happy from the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. I can't remember
the last time I was happy it see so long ago. I'm struggling.
Then I'm overloading. I feel like my minder be drown like a boodoo doll
while my wife everyone coped me. Look the bucket man said, that's me.
Question like I got good? I will see all maybe alone, and
I say ame, I'm all blatned up with doctor Jill. I'll say it
d dot again. No PROGRESSI in the boltings. I send it out again.
Her can't remember the last time I was happy it see so long ago.
My Brosper and at the end of my road man on the fucking boy
something Ball then all of this happy less why why drawn back? Definitely who
I am I have that is happy by the Mighty Suicide Squirrels, who are
here with us in studio, hanging out with TJ, Reckless and I and
uh yeah, it's funny. So before the song we were talking about you
know is it is a really happy song, and then I think the first
line is I can't remember the last time I was happy. Yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, it takes right. But the funny part is we're
all happy when we're making music. Yeah. Yeah. Music is the best
way to like to hide those kinds of things. You can have upbeat,
sad song and everyone's just like this song is great, and then you're just
like, oh wait, wait, you're saying, but yeah, the music
can be sad, but it's not like we're mere for We're here for a
fun time, right right, Yeah, absolutely if you're dealing with the reality
of life. We do have another song that we're gonna play at the end
of the show from these guys, but we are hanging out with the Mighty
Suicide Scurols here with us alive in studio. Did you guys have a lot
of shows coming up the rest of the year or not a lot, but
enough we're keeping busy. You don't like they're in the winter. I'm not
a fan of like booking a lot of shows unless they're really gonna be worthwhile.
I just you never know what the wind with the winter. You could
be like, oh, all week, it's gonna be pristine, you got
a show coming up, and then well we got a blizzard that day,
so it's canceled anyway. So it's kind of the winter is good just to
make music and just kind of hang out and hit the important shows. But
the most part, I'm not really looking. We are playing Bristol, connect
on Sunday. Excellent, Yeah, we got so we do. We do
have Friday Sunday. This weekend coming up, We're doing wester in Connecticut,
and then we got we got on the next weekend we're going to get Tattoos.
We're playing then we're getting Tattoos, And then we got a Palmer show
which is Western Mass and then we got a December seventh show in Worcester again
at Ralphs, and then I forget uh, then we're on the road day
after Thanksgiving. Day after Thanksgiving, we're in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Excellent.
Yeah, Jimmy West birthday party. If anyone can go, go to
Jimmy West Gerrants to punk check them out. We're gonna go. We're gonna
go hang out with them. It's his birthday. It's gonna be great,
it's gonna be fun. I got we got a couple of good bands,
a couple of bands from uh oh one Ding come from New York. We
got Quiet coming from New York. So I go. We've been helping out
Torn Band. We're gonna be playing with the Torn Band when we go to
Connecticut. They're going from Connecticut to our New New York to Connecticut. We're
gonna play a Bleachers in Bristol, and then right after Thanksgiving, they're coming
to Rhode Island doing their New England tour and they're gonna play with us at
the News Cafe and pot Tucket with I Forget. We've been playing with so
many bands, but I think it's the Jenner, the Punk. It's gotta
be the d op Sammy West Birthday party. So it's got to be the
donners to check them out. They're great. Yeah, they're good friends.
We've made a lot of good friends this year. We've really made our way
into like the circle of punks, I guess you could say, or just
the of the circle of our music that we're playing. Yeah, we really
fell in and have really grasping a hold of Yeah, a lot of what's
going on is in our Facebook live chat and says Booking shows in New England
during the winter is always like rolling the dice. Yeah, it is very
hot doing anything in New England. New England this summer we get a lot
of like these sports fest out in Boston. Yeah, it's like people's houses
and stuff. But we did like a lot of Saturdays and every Saturday this
year just rain rained this thing playing outside of the rainy. Yeah, it
was annoying. We made the best of it. People still came out.
A lot of people came out. Sports Fest was was a huge thing for
us this year. Any band out there trying to make an aim for yourself,
sign up for these Porsch fests. Yeah. They helped out parties.
Yeah, small and it's a town wide thing. The town wide thing,
it's approved. Yeah, you get lay out in the streets and the crowd
is just you get everything. You get everybody, the older people that you
know everything. Yeah, it's yeah, more people can get you out there.
You lose the label of a bar, so more people go. A
lot of people are are just not interesting because it says bar or you got
to go to a bar. Yeah. I lose so many people when I
when I market twenty one plus when it sucks to have to pull off the
whole age of show because where do you play It's so hard to do.
You do this on the side of the street though, and there's tons of
people. Oh yeah. I even played two blocks away from Fenway, right
on the main strip right on. It really turned down. Yeah, they
can almost turned down. But we were We're like outside of like some fancy
like coffee cafe thing, like high rise. That's probably why right there,
right apartment building right behind you. And then I started down that looks like
blue Man. Yeah. I was growing waters flying up. It got to
a boy where all of our stuff got soaked and we were like all right,
there was watertill it was too much and I was like, all right,
we're gonna be done. It was good, but but we still had
the best of it. You know, we had people pulling up on the
sidewalk in their cars just filming us doing this and nowt of it. There's
another band. You go a couple of blocks hour, there's another band.
It's always a good time. That's awesome. Didn't you guys say something earlier
too about you went out to Ohio? You played in December. That's gonna
be pretty much the height of our winter. Now why has that happened?
Like like that's all what a friend of ours name Dave Strong. Check him
out from Maine. Dave Strong, Maine, great guy, great music.
Helped us out a lot. But he's going on on tour okay, out
through Pennsylvania and Ohio, and we're jumping on with him for a show.
Yea, he got this very couple couple hopefully two shows to try and get
it more than one show. We got all these dates in the road,
so we're gonna try and we know some people along the way, so we're
gonna hopefully. Yeah. Strong, he's he's supported us a lot through from
from the beginning. Guys. It's awesome. So anybody can check them out,
like Dave's Strong. Dave Strong, check it out. Is he solo?
Artists or what he does both he does he's not a full band,
but does does do solo. Yeah, okay, all right, cool.
Yeah, he's heavy into it. A lot of the people that we've met
are pretty heavy into I feel like a lot of it. It's like you
got you got a couple, We got a couple of guys that are just
like in everything, like, yeah, a lot of it kind of is.
Yeah, it's like just one person doing a bunch of things. Someone's
gonna have the ideas, you know, someone's gonna be making the ideas to
the music. Steps in the chout says, you guys are so right.
All ages shows are invisible evidence why some younger people have a tough time relating
to human generated live performances. This is true. Yeah, I know,
go ahead, sorry. A lot of it's just tough to find a venue
or like a lot of people come from small towns and it's like you can't
go play a venue unless you rent it, and nobody wants to rent the
venue because then you're hold a thousand bucks a room, right right, right,
then if you don't fill it, and if you don't even make your
money back, then whatever you spend it's just kind of a waste. That's
why, Like I thought about doing under twenty ones, but it's like if
I'm putting a thousand bucks to put this room and I need to sell at
least one hundred tickets, and there's no way. Yeah right, you know
it's not going to happen. And a lot of people are interested in yeah,
the Dropkick Murphy. Right, if you're not mainstream, then it's like
you're kind of like nothing, which is said because a lot of the so
cool, so cool, it's just a lot more interesting. Support your local
guys. You know, a lot of bookings wanted to do though, All
Ages initiative from when I heard I talked to I talked to them a few
a few weeks ago at the Justin Clancy show. Yeah, I played yeah,
which I think would be huge. Definitely, I don't definitely help everybody,
it would help everyone. You need a place that would just want it.
But you need a good place that you gotta have a place that has
food. If you're gonna have a place that's gonna at least be underage,
you can do all the eighteen plus. You got to have food and you
got to have obviously a bar, but you can just you just got to
have the right place and just have someone who wants to deal with like the
responsibility of Hey, we got underage kids here, but we also are serving
adults as well. There used to be I don't know if any of you
guys remember, because this was a while ago, the Sad Cafe in Plastow,
you guys all, yeah, right, but right, yeah, yeah,
they used to do all ages shows. That was a great place.
I mean, I grew up in Fitchburg and we always had the Club four
ninety. Yeah, I'm not familiar with that. That was all ages place.
It was an all age's place. I didn't even serve alcohol, yeah,
you know, and you know, like Matt Kelly from the Drug Kicks.
Old bands used to play there for abuse. You know, like I've
seen so many bands there, so I can't even remember them all so many
beers. He doesn't remember, that's the beers, is it? Sam Blackchurch
played there? Oh really yeah back in the day, you know, like
it was. It doesn't exist anymore because the scene's gone. But yeah,
well that's a big thing too. The scenes. Just I feel like we're
in the most unappreciated scene. It's just there's no one that's really stuff to
play punk rockety yeah, I feel like it's stuff to play punk rockey these
days, no one, no one's interested in what you're doing unless you're big.
I feel like that's the toughest thing. That's always a struggle. No,
I feel like all the other genres people pay attend. Yeah, well
it's it's like a big local metal scene, yeah, scenes yeah, yeah,
yeah yeah. I just feel like the punk rock scene it's just really
underappreciated, undervalue. But we'll get it back. Yeah. It's it goes
on always, everything just trying to get something to the show. So it
just seems like it's very mm hmm coming from like DJing and booking, booking
DJs out here, every things coming go like right now, right now within
his Spanish and Latin right now. Unfortunately, I mean fortunately, but like
not unfortunate. But I'll put you in a box too much. That's just
like us. We'll play a show for two people, then we'll play a
show for decent I go for thirty people and you're like, all right,
this is awesome, Like but right, all depends. You gotta do the
grind, you know. That's what we've been doing all year. We probably
played over fifty shows this year. But a lot of it is just to
get out there up. Yeah. Yeah, sometimes you're just playing for the
other bands and everything's right now. That's when I went on Like that's like
when I went on tour Austin, Texas, we sold two tickets, but
Nashville we sold two hundred. Yeah. There's also the connections you make along
right right. Yeah, we've seen a bunch of touring bands, you know,
and it's like we used to play Monday Tuesday nights. Yeah, you
do that again any night of the week. Yeah, at that point,
I'm mad. I'm bad, was at that point though first. But you
know, when you're first starting out, even even just to make the connections
with all their bands, and you got to get yourself out there, play
the Monday night shows exactly anybody Tuesday do you say yes to? Never who's
going to be there either exactly? Never say no. You never know who's
going to be there, and just going to that one show could lead to
you getting onto it instantly. Just be in there. It just makes you
could you could be on another show that same night, just like hey,
now, yeah, we've played shows and all of a sudden, we leave
that night and we got three more shows right just because talking like I'm running
into that now with like with like weddings and stuff like that. I'll play
play clubs and they'll be like, hey, we have a wedding for you
down the line. I'm like, well, we gotta start to wrap up
and then we're gonna play We're gonna play Home. That's the one we haven't
played yet in a moment to finish up. But uh, guys, thank
you so much. This has been great for having us. Absolutely, absolutely
the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. Very easy to it with a name like that,
it's very easy to although, you know what's funny, So it's easy to
google you. But when I looked for the Facebook page, Yeah, answer,
you got the warning? You got the warning? I did? I
did? Yeah? Yeah, Hey, but you're all right right, I
don't know, I'm here, I'm here. Uh but uh no, I
appreciate you guys coming in. I love your sound, I love what you're
doing, and uh what what's uh? Obviously people can find you online easily.
Do you have a website specifically that you want to mention? No,
we're on Facebook. Typical stuff Instagram. Yeah, and the and the tunes
are on this the streaming platform, and you can think whatever you got,
we're on okay, and we will leave you at this. One more track
from the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. This is called Home. I'm coming home.
I'm coming home. I'm coming home. I'm coming home. Coming. Have
