0:15 what you do in the band. How's it going, guys. I'm Jared

0:18 Palmerlow. I'm the drummer for the Mighty Suicide Squirrels. It's a pleasure to

0:23 be here, all right. I'm Trevor laes On, the singer. I

0:28 also play guitar. I write all the songs, do all the talking.

0:32 I annoy all the people. There he is now, I'm Kevin Bastin.

0:38 I'm the bass player. Do some little singing here and there too. Yeah,

0:42 yeah, a little bit, very good, very good, very simple,

0:45 very as simple as you can be for a band. Have you,

0:48 guys always been Has it always been the three of you for this band?

0:52 Yeah? Yeah, Me and him have always stuck together for his lines has

0:55 been music. It's been me and him. Oh. So you guys have

0:58 been in a lot of bands? Yeah, not a lot, just one

1:00 other one. Yeah, like the last eight years. Yeah, yeah,

1:03 okay, Yeah, this is more of a new project for us. It's

1:06 only been going on for about a year and a half. Yeah, we're

1:08 a little bit, but we're pushing it. We're pushing it hard. Yeah.

1:11 I already made a bunch of music, so we're ready. Yeah,

1:15 we got a we got a bunch of tunes we're gonna play today. Really

1:17 looking forward to sharing these with everybody. By the way, so I have

1:19 to ask this right out of the gate, where does the name come from?

1:23 Uh? Started out, they just started out as a joke, and

1:26 then we had this really ongoing long name, and then it was just like,

1:34 let's just cut it down. We'll just be Yeah, we'll just be

1:37 the Squirrels, and we're ready to go with that. It just was really

1:41 added nothing we didn't expect to be doing anywhere. Might I was gonna say,

1:47 you didn't cut it down that much, not that much just now and

1:51 talking easier to say the squirrel right right. But yeah, it just came

1:55 as a joke. We didn't expect to be playing anything nearly as my whuch

2:00 as we are. We're playing way more than we thought would be really.

2:02 Yeah, yeah, so we're pretty much every weekend we're out. We really

2:07 tried this year to push ourselves and get ourselves out there, and it really

2:13 showed everything just even just being like everywhere from wester to Boston to Nashua,

2:21 Connectian, Rhode Island, Maine. Ya been all over the place. Yeah,

2:25 Ohio, Ohio next month. Yeah. Yeah. Started as a joke,

2:31 just trying to just keep the music going for me and him. Yeah,

2:35 and we taught him a bunch of cover songs and then just kind of

2:39 make short songs. So it was just here we go, let's make a

2:43 bunch of short songs and then just punks just rock yea, the simplest songs

2:47 you can imagine, you know. Do the songs come pretty easy? Yeah,

2:53 they're not bad. It depends on how I feel. For the most

2:57 part, a lot of like like my emotional like journal coming coming to life

3:02 type deal. So it's it's pretty good. None of them are really like

3:06 positive, so it's all, you know, it's like dismal, miserable,

3:13 you know. I mean, we do have happy and happy. It sounds

3:16 happy, but it's not. But yeah, I don't know. If I

3:21 have something to be happy about, i'd write a happy song. There must

3:24 be a happy one in there somewhere. I mean, you're not happy about

3:27 it. There's a couple, Yeah, there's a couple of good there's a

3:29 couple of ones, but they're like a skew and astray, you know,

3:32 they're strange or inappropriate. Yeah, you know, just about your lifely,

3:38 your daily struggles and daily struggles in life is what we're really hitting our songs.

3:43 Besides like the few fun ones. It's yeah, it's just all about

3:47 life. Where are you guys from? Are you from around here? Are

3:52 you from here? We're from athol Masks Okay, yeah, we're all uh

3:55 like branched apart, you know, but we practice an athought so we're pretty

4:00 much not too far from Atho, you know as Alost, like an hour

4:04 and twenty minutes from here. About that. Yeah, it's not It's really

4:09 not that bad to get no bad. I'm just laughing because that for the

4:13 name of a town or a city. I've always thought that's such a funny

4:16 sounding name, at least like a river, a river, rat race,

4:21 and everyone calls it rat hole, you know really Yeah, yeah, we

4:27 used to call it the rat hole. Yeah, going to the rat hole.

4:29 That's what I've always known it you're not really going anywhere pleasant. There's

4:34 there's nothing good there. Hey where it's a little better, a little better.

4:40 I mean, we do have to say we go for those listening we

4:43 are probably at all premiere punk rock band. There you go, there you

4:46 go. All right, you know we are probably the elite of the elite

4:50 out there. You might be other than the rats in the sewer, you

4:55 might be the premiere band from there. You know, you're right, maybe

5:00 an original band, but there's probably you know, the cover band's probably got

5:02 but an original band's cover band. Right, We're not here for covers.

5:06 We're here for originals. Is that a it's a city? Is it a

5:11 tower city? Is it considered a town? Say it's a town. It's

5:15 an up and coming town. It's very close to a city, I would

5:18 say, almost, well probably now yeah, but close, it's very close.

5:23 Yeah. Well, all right, they got enough to do with all,

5:26 like the new stuff they've put into that. That's all I know.

5:30 I got more than winching in, that's for sure. Uh, Isaac Banks

5:41 Oh? Oh, A lot of It's like bart relusion Misfits, definitely

5:46 miss Its, yeah, Dedans, descendence effects, you know, Offspring,

5:54 I definitely we've got a good offspring sound, operational, just for the simplicity,

5:59 insane. I don't know. I feel like we relate to a lot

6:01 of bands just because we're very simple all over. A lot of it's really

6:08 three or four chords. Yeah, yeah, you know, so it's very

6:11 simple. Yeah. How many songs have you guys recorded? Twenty? That's

6:15 pretty good. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, we're just like they said,

6:18 they really were just released our second album October twentieth. Oh yeah,

6:23 our second album just came out. Yeah, oh very cool. Wow,

6:26 that's that's very album modify whatever called nuts in your face? Yeah and squirrels.

6:36 Yeah that that makes sense. Yeah, that's what they eat, right

6:40 yeah yeah when when when I thoughd that? What's that first one called the

6:46 Greasy Potato? Oh yeah yeah yeah, yeah you forgot I did, Yeah,

6:51 don't. I don't know what that means, but it sounds like something.

11:33 mikey Lemire back up vocal. Oh yeah, he came to the studio with

11:39 us. He did one song. It's on band camp, isn't it the

11:46 I can't help filling there, but yeah there. So he's not an official

11:56 member of the band, obviously good. It's awesome when he's around. He's

12:01 a really good singer. He's awesome. Yeah. Yeah, he just makes

12:05 this sound better. He does what I can't do. He does. He's

12:13 good to sing with. He knows the songs, he does, he does

12:16 the work. It's just it's hard to get a hold of him. He's

12:20 one of those kind of people I understand. Yeah, And where do you

14:43 It's funny. It's a travel town. That's the thing though. No matter

14:46 how small a town is, there will always be hats. Yeah, if

14:54 that has like seven of them. They have a McDonald's cafe we got yeah,

15:01 yeah, but you go to Wendy's. Hey, where's Mikey. He's

15:05 at work. Do you got anything to say about Mikey? Give him?

15:18 is the most amazing person I have ever met. And he, Oh my

15:26 god. I wish he did have more time to be able to play with

15:30 you guys more so do we Definitely? No, he and he Oh my

15:35 god. I love seeing you guys perform live, especially when he's with you.

15:39 It's great. He really knows how to work the crowd. Yes he

15:43 does. Does he do more than one song with you? Or if us?

15:48 Cool? He plays most okay? Yeah, he's just the perfect element

15:52 to like, you know, he's like the spice. You're like, oh

15:56 we got Mikey tonight. There's a Littlerazi dazzle. If we don't, well

16:00 then you just get sorry, but you just get us. We're gonna kill

16:04 it, but you just get us. But yeah, he just's he's very

16:10 very talented at singing. So it's like when he's with us, it's just

16:12 like, oh yeah, next level. Yeah yeah, it just really yeah,

16:18 And I don't have to sing so much, so it sounds that much.

16:21 The less I sing, the better we sound, you know. But

16:27 that but I sing it. I sing it all. So you know,

16:30 you don't have a choice. This is what it is, you know.

16:33 Yeah, but you know what, at least you're good on the guitar,

18:00 Yeah, So I started to ask about where you guys record because everything

18:06 sounds really good. So what's the recording. It's in Princeton, mass Okay,

18:11 uh, engineers Roger Lavalley. Excellent guy, does great work. Yeah

18:17 yeah. Prices are good, very fair. Yeah, it's nice. It's

18:22 like you're just basically going into someone's house. It's kind of like just like

18:26 a studio apartment. Okay, yeah, right behind the santique shop. Yeah

18:30 it's nice though. Yeah, he's got a ton of equipment, he's got

18:33 everything you can eat. You don't really even have to bring anything if you

18:36 don't want to show up and play. A very nice place, really good

18:38 pizza place right up the street. I will say, yeah, Now,

18:44 how did you get connected with him, working with him. How did that

18:45 come about? Honestly, just Google recording there. Yeah, we know a

18:51 couple of bands we know also, I believe went there. Yeah, Michael

18:55 came in the morning after, so I don't know if anybody's ever heard of

18:56 them. Yeah, out of Western and then and he lashly did some stuff

19:02 there too. You know, a couple of people it's like I can think

19:04 of off the top of my head. Yeah, but yeah, it's worked

19:07 out really well. It's very easy going, very fair price. Yeah,

19:11 very good guys, very easy going. Yeah, and he obviously understands what

19:15 you guys are. Yeah. You just sounds a general idea, even if

19:18 you're not sure, you just be like, we kind of want to sound

19:19 like this band, or we want to kind of sound like this band.

19:22 Yeah, sound that, and he'll he'll get you there. Yeah, you

19:26 know. Yeah. Because it was so often a you know, a recording

19:29 engineer, it kind of becomes like a de facto producer too. You know,

19:33 in a way you kind of gotta especially if you're kind of just like

19:37 throwing the music at him, you got to have someone who's kind of like,

19:40 we got to build it. You need someone to build the music for

19:42 you if you haven't like fully constructed it. It's a good way of thinking

19:45 about He did everything, he recorded it, he mixed, he mastered it.

19:51 Yeah, pretty much everything was a song album, one one, one

19:55 day. Yeah, our first album as one studio take. Yeah, by

20:00 time we done it was fully mastered. Yeah. Wow that's fast. Yeah.

20:07 But we don't want yeah experience. We don't want to be like overdubbed

20:15 and sound like something that we're not. Yeah. We want our music to

20:19 sound like us when we play. Yeah, yeah we're not. We don't.

20:26 We don't you know. Yeah, we're what we are. Yeah.

20:30 Yeah, we're just human. Simple. I don't know if you're human.

20:37 We're just simple. Yeah. And the studio is harder for us, I

20:41 think because we're not really a studio band. We're just we're more of a

20:45 live band. We need the energy or for the fun and each other.

20:49 We just go for it. We have a blast. We're just here for

20:52 the entertainment. We don't necessarily play perfect, you know, but we just

20:57 have fun and that's what we're there for instead of like trying to nail every

21:02 single. No, that's definitely not happening. You know. There's reason you

21:10 can have fun and joke with each other with it. That's that's all.

21:11 Yeah, we get we get the people going and engaged in the show and

21:17 have Usually we have more crowd engagement than most, you know, And that's

21:22 what we're there for. It's what I'm there for. There for the fun.

21:25 Let's just have fun. Yeah. Now, when you record, do

21:27 you got do you go in and play live together? We play all together.

21:32 Yeah, we go in and usually what we do before we go record,

21:37 we'll go to Jared's house and we'll practice for a month without singing any

21:40 work. Oh yeah, yeah, we have a silent practice because there.

21:44 Yeah, you just play the music first and then then you go to the

21:48 studio with bang them out one or two takes. Yeah, right, it

21:51 feels really good. Yeah. This time we had Mikey saying in a separate

21:55 booth in a different room and that went really well. Yeah, that helped.

22:00 It's if you get on the vocals, it's key because half the times,

22:03 after a while you kind of tune out from the music and your you're

22:06 more focused on the words of of what's going on. So you focused on

22:08 a couple of words of all right, now I should make the change right

22:11 here. That's why I'm changing. And when you take that out, you're

22:15 kind of like you're a lost all because yeah, you're like, this part's

22:22 happened. I was expecting this, or I was expecting that right now.

22:26 You guys, prior to this album, you've recorded other things. Have you

22:30 recorded everything? Uh? At that the same studio, everything's been done with

22:34 the same studio, the same engineer for the Squirrels. Yeah, the same

22:40 person, same studio, same place. Cool like him, Yeah, he's

22:45 good. He's right near us, so there's no reason to go somewhere else.

22:49 Although now they say that they are making a place and I think Roger's

22:56 going to be moving there and withst there, so we'll be doing it like

23:00 in his backyard. Oh wow, like in a barn or something. I

23:04 think it's the barn in its backyard. Yeah, so you know, it

23:10 makes more sense for him. You can just do right at home. So

23:12 that'll be cool. But well we'll still be going to the same person.

23:17 A lot of a lot of bands in that area too, in Worcester,

23:18 so that makes sense. Yeah yeah, well yeah exactly. Yeah, you

23:22 got to go where the music is, yeah, absolutely, Yeah, he's

23:27 in a decent place to get to everybody. But it's not like it's easy

23:30 to get to everybody. By the way, the Prodigal Son has returned.

35:07 night was so good. I remember when Alehouse was right next to there.

35:15 I don't know, especially on the weekend. It's just like you need some

39:15 fun time, right right, Yeah, absolutely if you're dealing with the reality

39:21 of life. We do have another song that we're gonna play at the end

39:22 of the show from these guys, but we are hanging out with the Mighty

39:27 Suicide Scurols here with us alive in studio. Did you guys have a lot

39:30 of shows coming up the rest of the year or not a lot, but

39:35 enough we're keeping busy. You don't like they're in the winter. I'm not

39:39 a fan of like booking a lot of shows unless they're really gonna be worthwhile.

39:47 I just you never know what the wind with the winter. You could

39:50 be like, oh, all week, it's gonna be pristine, you got

39:52 a show coming up, and then well we got a blizzard that day,

39:55 so it's canceled anyway. So it's kind of the winter is good just to

40:00 make music and just kind of hang out and hit the important shows. But

40:04 the most part, I'm not really looking. We are playing Bristol, connect

40:09 on Sunday. Excellent, Yeah, we got so we do. We do

40:13 have Friday Sunday. This weekend coming up, We're doing wester in Connecticut,

40:17 and then we got we got on the next weekend we're going to get Tattoos.

40:22 We're playing then we're getting Tattoos, And then we got a Palmer show

40:27 which is Western Mass and then we got a December seventh show in Worcester again

40:35 at Ralphs, and then I forget uh, then we're on the road day

40:38 after Thanksgiving. Day after Thanksgiving, we're in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Excellent.

40:51 go hang out with them. It's his birthday. It's gonna be great,

40:52 it's gonna be fun. I got we got a couple of good bands,

40:57 a couple of bands from uh oh one Ding come from New York. We

41:00 got Quiet coming from New York. So I go. We've been helping out

41:02 Torn Band. We're gonna be playing with the Torn Band when we go to

41:06 Connecticut. They're going from Connecticut to our New New York to Connecticut. We're

41:12 gonna play a Bleachers in Bristol, and then right after Thanksgiving, they're coming

41:17 to Rhode Island doing their New England tour and they're gonna play with us at

41:22 the News Cafe and pot Tucket with I Forget. We've been playing with so

41:30 many bands, but I think it's the Jenner, the Punk. It's gotta

41:32 be the d op Sammy West Birthday party. So it's got to be the

41:37 donners to check them out. They're great. Yeah, they're good friends.

41:40 We've made a lot of good friends this year. We've really made our way

41:45 into like the circle of punks, I guess you could say, or just

41:51 the of the circle of our music that we're playing. Yeah, we really

41:54 fell in and have really grasping a hold of Yeah, a lot of what's

42:00 going on is in our Facebook live chat and says Booking shows in New England

42:05 during the winter is always like rolling the dice. Yeah, it is very

42:08 hot doing anything in New England. New England this summer we get a lot

42:14 of like these sports fest out in Boston. Yeah, it's like people's houses

42:19 and stuff. But we did like a lot of Saturdays and every Saturday this

42:22 year just rain rained this thing playing outside of the rainy. Yeah, it

42:30 was annoying. We made the best of it. People still came out.

42:32 A lot of people came out. Sports Fest was was a huge thing for

42:37 us this year. Any band out there trying to make an aim for yourself,

42:39 sign up for these Porsch fests. Yeah. They helped out parties.

42:43 Yeah, small and it's a town wide thing. The town wide thing,

42:46 it's approved. Yeah, you get lay out in the streets and the crowd

42:51 is just you get everything. You get everybody, the older people that you

42:54 know everything. Yeah, it's yeah, more people can get you out there.

43:00 You lose the label of a bar, so more people go. A

43:02 lot of people are are just not interesting because it says bar or you got

43:09 to go to a bar. Yeah. I lose so many people when I

43:13 when I market twenty one plus when it sucks to have to pull off the

43:16 whole age of show because where do you play It's so hard to do.

43:21 You do this on the side of the street though, and there's tons of

43:22 people. Oh yeah. I even played two blocks away from Fenway, right

43:27 on the main strip right on. It really turned down. Yeah, they

43:30 can almost turned down. But we were We're like outside of like some fancy

43:36 like coffee cafe thing, like high rise. That's probably why right there,

43:42 right apartment building right behind you. And then I started down that looks like

43:46 blue Man. Yeah. I was growing waters flying up. It got to

43:52 a boy where all of our stuff got soaked and we were like all right,

43:54 there was watertill it was too much and I was like, all right,

43:58 we're gonna be done. It was good, but but we still had

44:01 the best of it. You know, we had people pulling up on the

44:05 sidewalk in their cars just filming us doing this and nowt of it. There's

44:12 another band. You go a couple of blocks hour, there's another band.

44:14 It's always a good time. That's awesome. Didn't you guys say something earlier

44:17 too about you went out to Ohio? You played in December. That's gonna

44:23 be pretty much the height of our winter. Now why has that happened?

44:25 Like like that's all what a friend of ours name Dave Strong. Check him

44:30 out from Maine. Dave Strong, Maine, great guy, great music.

44:36 Helped us out a lot. But he's going on on tour okay, out

44:42 through Pennsylvania and Ohio, and we're jumping on with him for a show.

44:47 Yea, he got this very couple couple hopefully two shows to try and get

44:52 it more than one show. We got all these dates in the road,

44:55 so we're gonna try and we know some people along the way, so we're

44:59 gonna hopefully. Yeah. Strong, he's he's supported us a lot through from

45:05 from the beginning. Guys. It's awesome. So anybody can check them out,

45:14 Artists or what he does both he does he's not a full band,

45:16 but does does do solo. Yeah, okay, all right, cool.

45:20 Yeah, he's heavy into it. A lot of the people that we've met

45:23 are pretty heavy into I feel like a lot of it. It's like you

45:29 got you got a couple, We got a couple of guys that are just

45:31 like in everything, like, yeah, a lot of it kind of is.

45:37 Yeah, it's like just one person doing a bunch of things. Someone's

45:40 gonna have the ideas, you know, someone's gonna be making the ideas to

45:44 the music. Steps in the chout says, you guys are so right.

45:47 All ages shows are invisible evidence why some younger people have a tough time relating

45:53 to human generated live performances. This is true. Yeah, I know,

45:59 go ahead, sorry. A lot of it's just tough to find a venue

46:02 or like a lot of people come from small towns and it's like you can't

46:07 go play a venue unless you rent it, and nobody wants to rent the

46:09 venue because then you're hold a thousand bucks a room, right right, right,

46:13 then if you don't fill it, and if you don't even make your

46:15 money back, then whatever you spend it's just kind of a waste. That's

46:19 why, Like I thought about doing under twenty ones, but it's like if

46:22 I'm putting a thousand bucks to put this room and I need to sell at

46:27 least one hundred tickets, and there's no way. Yeah right, you know

46:30 it's not going to happen. And a lot of people are interested in yeah,

46:34 the Dropkick Murphy. Right, if you're not mainstream, then it's like

46:38 you're kind of like nothing, which is said because a lot of the so

46:44 cool, so cool, it's just a lot more interesting. Support your local

46:47 guys. You know, a lot of bookings wanted to do though, All

46:52 Ages initiative from when I heard I talked to I talked to them a few

46:55 a few weeks ago at the Justin Clancy show. Yeah, I played yeah,

47:00 which I think would be huge. Definitely, I don't definitely help everybody,

47:04 it would help everyone. You need a place that would just want it.

47:07 But you need a good place that you gotta have a place that has

47:10 food. If you're gonna have a place that's gonna at least be underage,

47:15 you can do all the eighteen plus. You got to have food and you

47:19 got to have obviously a bar, but you can just you just got to

47:22 have the right place and just have someone who wants to deal with like the

47:25 responsibility of Hey, we got underage kids here, but we also are serving

47:31 adults as well. There used to be I don't know if any of you

47:34 guys remember, because this was a while ago, the Sad Cafe in Plastow,

47:38 you guys all, yeah, right, but right, yeah, yeah,

47:53 they used to do all ages shows. That was a great place.

47:58 I mean, I grew up in Fitchburg and we always had the Club four

48:01 ninety. Yeah, I'm not familiar with that. That was all ages place.

48:06 It was an all age's place. I didn't even serve alcohol, yeah,

48:08 you know, and you know, like Matt Kelly from the Drug Kicks.

48:14 Old bands used to play there for abuse. You know, like I've

48:21 seen so many bands there, so I can't even remember them all so many

48:23 beers. He doesn't remember, that's the beers, is it? Sam Blackchurch

48:30 played there? Oh really yeah back in the day, you know, like

48:32 it was. It doesn't exist anymore because the scene's gone. But yeah,

48:37 well that's a big thing too. The scenes. Just I feel like we're

48:40 in the most unappreciated scene. It's just there's no one that's really stuff to

48:46 play punk rockety yeah, I feel like it's stuff to play punk rockey these

48:50 days, no one, no one's interested in what you're doing unless you're big.

48:52 I feel like that's the toughest thing. That's always a struggle. No,

48:57 I feel like all the other genres people pay attend. Yeah, well

49:00 it's it's like a big local metal scene, yeah, scenes yeah, yeah,

49:07 yeah yeah. I just feel like the punk rock scene it's just really

49:10 underappreciated, undervalue. But we'll get it back. Yeah. It's it goes

49:16 on always, everything just trying to get something to the show. So it

49:22 just seems like it's very mm hmm coming from like DJing and booking, booking

49:28 DJs out here, every things coming go like right now, right now within

49:32 his Spanish and Latin right now. Unfortunately, I mean fortunately, but like

49:37 not unfortunate. But I'll put you in a box too much. That's just

49:43 like us. We'll play a show for two people, then we'll play a

49:45 show for decent I go for thirty people and you're like, all right,

49:51 this is awesome, Like but right, all depends. You gotta do the

49:53 grind, you know. That's what we've been doing all year. We probably

49:55 played over fifty shows this year. But a lot of it is just to

49:59 get out there up. Yeah. Yeah, sometimes you're just playing for the

50:01 other bands and everything's right now. That's when I went on Like that's like

50:05 when I went on tour Austin, Texas, we sold two tickets, but

50:10 Nashville we sold two hundred. Yeah. There's also the connections you make along

50:16 right right. Yeah, we've seen a bunch of touring bands, you know,

50:20 and it's like we used to play Monday Tuesday nights. Yeah, you

50:23 do that again any night of the week. Yeah, at that point,

50:28 I'm mad. I'm bad, was at that point though first. But you

50:30 know, when you're first starting out, even even just to make the connections

50:36 with all their bands, and you got to get yourself out there, play

50:37 the Monday night shows exactly anybody Tuesday do you say yes to? Never who's

50:43 going to be there either exactly? Never say no. You never know who's

50:46 going to be there, and just going to that one show could lead to

50:50 you getting onto it instantly. Just be in there. It just makes you

50:53 could you could be on another show that same night, just like hey,

50:57 now, yeah, we've played shows and all of a sudden, we leave

50:59 that night and we got three more shows right just because talking like I'm running

51:05 into that now with like with like weddings and stuff like that. I'll play

51:08 play clubs and they'll be like, hey, we have a wedding for you

51:10 down the line. I'm like, well, we gotta start to wrap up

51:19 and then we're gonna play We're gonna play Home. That's the one we haven't

51:21 played yet in a moment to finish up. But uh, guys, thank
