Speaker 4: I have my pedal board with all my effects for my base down below. I have a mixer off to the side. Yep. I have an air synth which I waved my hands over like a magician. Yep. Right, and then I have uh, this is the Devin Town's in ocean machine. It's a dual delays and reverb built in. It's a nice pedal. And then I have my b beat right here. It's an Italian machine, and it hosts all my backing tracks and I can control all my tracks separately. So wow, I send out, I send out my drums, my keyboards, my organs and synths and all my special effects all on separate channels through this thing.

Speaker 4: So okay, that's like my latest thing since I've seen you last.

Speaker 3: Wow. Yeah, No, it's impressive in this technology. I mean, I assume some of this is uh not of this world because I noticed you have an alien with you who I assume she.

Speaker 4: Came down to help me out. I could. I can't do this all by myself. I'm not, that's mort right right.

Speaker 3: Yes, well, well very good, so trying to trying to make sure we get her in the shot for people watching online, right, well excellent. So Aaron, of course you're gonna play what is it, five songs for us.

Speaker 3: Oh okay, I'm gonna put the put the camera on you. Oh and the alien too, Yes, I've your Mica on as well. Now, by the way, I do have to ask, as a practical matter, in terms of the alien, are we in any danger?

Speaker 4: I don't think so. Okay, she hasn't done anything weird yet except for that.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I can't I can't understand her, but.

Speaker 4: I can't either. But maybe for all we know, she just follows me around for all we know.

Speaker 3: Though, See, here's the problem. She could be talking about how you know, her Martians or whoever are going.

Speaker 4: To come, and you could be asking for help, and we're interpreting it as jud.

Speaker 3: Well I was thinking something more sinister. I mean, you know, she could be planning to destroy us. There could be there could be an invasion underway. And I noticed how she reacted when I said that. She seemed excited by the idea of destroying us.

Speaker 4: Yeah, you could be like the Silver Surfer and telling telling us destructions is on it on its way.

Speaker 3: Yeah. So that so that's deeply concerning. But if that is in fact, what ends up happening. Just remember everybody, you heard it here first on Matt con Unleashed. So very good, very good.

I don't know what you're saying, but h but I almost don't want to it could be very frightening. So well, very good, very good. So tell us about the album. Tell us about Lid Liquor.

Speaker 4: All right, Lid Liquor is my first album that I've done one hundred percent all by myself. I didn't have any help. I didn't have any guests musicians this time around. None, none at all.

Speaker 6: Wow.

Speaker 4: Okay, No, I did the whole thing myself, and I wanted to try something different from everything else I've done so far, so I went for the Oregon Trio distorted bass sound. Yeah you know, yeah, I said, bunch of rules at the beginning of the album. I usually do that at the beginning of each album. Set a bunch of rules uh to follow and uh stay by and it kind of like it changes the album and it crafts it like that weird way that you're looking for.

Speaker 3: Do you find that doing that doing it that way, like setting rules? Does it help you? Because I would imagine when you're doing see I've never done anything like that, but I would imagine when you're doing something all yourself where it's literally all you. It's probably easy to get distracted or kind of wander off into different directions with it as you're going and maybe get away from your original vision.

Speaker 7: Does it?

Speaker 4: Also, like in my past work, I've I've used everything I could find under the sun. Yeah, you know, synthesizers, special effects, contact mics, just like, uh everything, you know, all these different sounds, anything I could think of, anything I could find I used to use i've in the past. Yeah, And I didn't want that. I didn't want a bunch of samples. I wanted something that would be like more attractive towards other musicians to come and play with me because I've been trying to build a live band.

Speaker 4: I've been trying to build a live band for a long time, and I was trying to do that in my last album. And I had my friend Jason on drums, but he doesn't want to go out live, okay, you know, so like that's why I didn't have him on the new album. Really, that's like the only reason I didn't have because I wanted anybody I was I was searching for a drummer, so like I wanted it to be open in case I found one while I was during the recording session. Because this took me two years to make this. Wow, that way longer than anything else I've ever done.

Speaker 4: You know, it's it's way more minimalist, but it took me so much longer.

Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, is it?

Speaker 7: Uh?

Speaker 3: Is it something that you think you'll do again? Like, like, I don't know if you're already thinking ahead to the next album.

Speaker 4: With the I don't know. See. Okay, So I found a drummer. Yes, it's not her though, No, no, no, I don't think she plays any instruments. Just oh right right, you know, yeah, yeah, I might give her a shaker or something sometimes.

Speaker 3: Sure, sure, okay, you know, but yeah, I thought I.

Speaker 4: Found a drummer. I've been playing with him for the past couple of months, and the sounds already changing. Oh really yeaeah, so like I have no idea what it's gonna sound like moving forward.

Speaker 3: Oh, by the way, you're getting some love in the chat from Adam Jocelyn of course, from the band Avid Blood. Yeah yeah, yeah, Adam, he's a.

Speaker 4: Good friend of mine. Yeah yeah, yeah, I felt so. I filmed a video for this album, The Passenger, that song, Yeah yeah, yeah, I filmed a video at Adam's house. Oh okiddy, Yeah, so that like that cool like airplane hangar thing that he has. Yeah, that's at his house.

Speaker 3: Oh no, kiddy, Oh very cool, very cool.

Speaker 4: Where is that temple somewhere out there?

Speaker 3: Okay?

Speaker 4: Out west?

Speaker 3: Is that is that up by Keane?

Speaker 4: Like in like so I'm in Milford, So it's like I would say, it's like in between Keen and Milfi.

Speaker 3: Okayay, okay, gotcha, gotcha? And then so what how has the live situation been becau is? Obviously what you're doing is unique with your your whole setup and everything. Have you been playing out?

Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I've been playing tons of shows. I just played Illinois Show. Oh yeah last week? Oh yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, you know, I played everywhere like I played the Button Factory. I've played, uh where if I played. I've just played a lot of shows. Yeah I don't, but I don't have anything planned for moving forward for a while. I yeah, uh, I got I got Terminus in October, okay, and then I'm I'm putting on Okay, so I'm putting on a show myself that I'm not going to play and unless I have to, it's called thank you bass player.

Speaker 4: Oh there is a sticker in there. Uh that packet that glows in the dark. Really that says yeah, thank you bass player on it. See.

Speaker 3: I like that kind of thing because I'm a bass player anymore.

Speaker 4: But I knew you had appreciate it.

Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I gotta find this and and uh, I gotta find this. Oh yes, basically, so I'm gonna put the camera back for those watching on video.

Speaker 4: Yeah, this is big.

Speaker 4: I actually just got a bunch of shirts in the mail for that.

Speaker 3: Like, well, because you have you have a whole series on YouTube right right, So that that's what it was.

Speaker 4: It was a series on YouTube last year in twenty five. Yeah, that I was doing it, and the month of November was dedicated to bass players and I called it thank You bass Player. And I had nine bass players like twice a week, yep, for the whole month. So every Wednesday and Saturday, I posted a song from a different person or or or a few songs. Yeah, like Darryl Barnes played like three songs, you know, there was a few people that played more than one. But every every Wednesday and every Saturday, I had a different bass player come and perform, and I filmed it and edited it all together and posted it edit like I was working on it for almost like I would say, almost a year.

Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe maybe eight months before before November.

Speaker 3: It's really good. I encourage people to check it out.

Speaker 4: It took a long time. Yeah, but I don't I don't have access to that particular space before that I was using for the studio.

Speaker 3: Yeah.

Speaker 4: So to h I figured, like, I do a live event. Oh so I'm doing a thank you bass player live September nineteenth at the Spot in Nashville.

Speaker 1: Oh wow.

Speaker 4: Yeah. It kind of start at six o'clock and I have eight bass players okay, uh, and they're all they're all going to be doing twenty minute sets. Some of them are bringing a drummer. A lot of them are cheating and bringing a drummer. But that's okay.

Speaker 3: Yeah.

Speaker 4: I had I had a lot of like really strict rules on the internet show. Really yeah, and I'm like way more open to this, like I don't care, like, uh, they weren't allowed to do covers before, they weren't allowed to bring other people, like some some people you don't wanted to bring guitar players some people want, you know, and yeah, I mean that's cool like for like a like, because that was on another show called Live from the Chateau Billadeau Studio. Oh yes, yeah, I was doing that for like a year and a half and that was every single week.

Speaker 4: Yeah, sixty three episodes they did, and I was doing that. So the Thank You bass Player was just a segment.

Speaker 3: Yeah.

Speaker 4: I had all kinds of bands and duos and trios come in as a guest so on that one. Yeah, but uh so I'm having the show. I got eight bass players because I just don't want to mess up their names, all right. I got Tim Ducett starting. I got Jason Skulls you know him. Of course I'm dead Harris Well, yeah, I got h forgive me if I messed this up. Kelsey bramag him, okay, okay. Michael Mendonza and he oh yeah, yeah. He was from Atlanta Corvette what is else. He's in Boom Lava and he's uh, he's very active in the Manchester James scene.

Speaker 4: Let's see here. I got Nathan Sonnel from the Faith and Band. I got Christopher Beaton, you know you know who that is from the turbocats. Of course. Let's see here. I got Shane McWilliams and I got John Clifford.

Speaker 3: Okay, you know that's great. That's a great lineup.

Speaker 4: Yeah. So it's gonna be a good show. And I'm not gonna be playing this one, I don't think. I mean, if one of them, you know, doesn't make it for whatever reason, then I'll be prepared to play. Okay, but I'm gonna be hosting the Night you know, presented by.

Speaker 4: September nineteenth at the Spot at the same it's a free show. We're taking donations. If you want to give donations, I'll just whatever we get. Speaker 4: Most of them were guests, on the Thank You bass Player. That bringing back okay, bringing it back, Yeah, that bringing back so some of some of them, let's see, like so Tim, Jason, Kelsey, Michael, Uh, Chrispy, these are all people. John Clifford he was like John Clifford was the first one really to uh come and do my show.

Speaker 3: Yeah all right, well very good. So so you're gonna bring it back on YouTube as well, that is what you're saying.

Speaker 4: Or no, no, well I'm going to post the show, okay, gotcha. So like this year, it's only going to be one episode of Thank You bass Player, the live live episode, you know.

Speaker 3: Or or if you've got eight bass players, it could be right, I will be splitting it all up.

Speaker 4: Like I said, so I might I might get like some gigs coming in you know there's some festivals that have Yeah, like I apply to everything. I apply to everything that's out there undo the time. I'm always pretty open, yeah and available. But so I don't have any gigs until October tenth at the at Terminus. Oh okay, I can't remember all the bands. One of the band is called the Magic Thinking eep.

Speaker 3: Oh really I'd be.

Speaker 4: Playing with yeah and there I think they on them like Rhode Island or Connecticut or something down south.

Speaker 3: Okay, okay there, yeah, very good, very good. Are is anyone ever surprised? Like have you ever played a show where you book the show and then you show up with your your whole setup and and uh maybe the owner of the manager of the place is like like not that.

Speaker 4: No, Like the people at the venue, like whoever booked me know what they're getting? Usually right, right, you know, it's the surprise is usually from like you know, the patreons. Yeah, yeah, the people that are just there right, you know. Like, So, I like, I like to videotape everything. I like to film everything, and I usually bring two three cameras. Uh so you always you put care I put cameras in the back of the room on the side of the room and you pick up people talking about you. Oh yeah, and that's that's where you hear people are surprised.

Speaker 4: They they're like, it's just a guy with a base. Yeah, that's what I That's what I usually hear.

Speaker 3: That's fun.

Speaker 4: It's just a guy with a base. You know, I don't know what he's gonna do.

Speaker 3: Oh, that's that's cool though, that's really cool.

Speaker 4: Yeah.

Speaker 3: You must have people who who come up to you afterward and they're like, wow, that you know, I didn't expect that. Yeah, that was that was more than I thought it was gonna be.

Speaker 4: People generally like it. Yeah, yeah, you know when I when I when I can get a crowd, you know, that's the hard part, you know, getting people out. When I do like people genuinely, Like everybody comes up and talks to me afterwards, and they all like it, and they're surprised, and they tell me the songs that they like. Yeah, I'm always surprised because like I'm thinking, like, oh, it's gonna be the Passenger is going to be the song, and everybody likes mister Greenpeace Live.

Speaker 3: Yep.

Speaker 4: You know, so yeah, I don't know. You never know, right, right, the public's gonna pick it now?

Speaker 3: Are you when you play live?

Speaker 4: Now?

Speaker 3: Are you just playing stuff from the new album? Are you still play?

Speaker 4: It depends on how long my set is. Yeah, you know, so if it's uh, if it's like thirty five minutes, I'm just playing the album okay. If it's anything over, I'm going to put in other tracks. Gotcha all the hits? Yeah?

Speaker 3: And does anything ever go wrong with this this whole Yeah, they're.

Speaker 4: So like okay of course last so I uh, and today's setup, I barely I heard the backing track. Something was wrong. I couldn't get the volume up. At one point they were completely off, so I was only playing so the Passenger. I didn't hear the song at all.

Speaker 7: Oh.

Speaker 4: I didn't hear the song. I didn't hear my bass, I didn't hear the vocals. All I heard while playing The Passenger today was the click.

Speaker 3: Oh no kidding, So.

Speaker 4: I had to just play it in the click and that's it and count in my head.

Speaker 8: Wow.

Speaker 4: So I'm gonna hear it later on when I go home for the first time. Because so that's some stuff that went wrong. My g string was completely out of to it. It was all stepped up. Yeah, so like that was throwing me way off, especially at the end.

Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you got it out though, you got through it.

Speaker 4: Yeah, the show must go on. You gotta you just gotta go through it. You can't really stop. Yeah, and you know, don't apologize.

Speaker 3: Do you ever have you ever done a show where everything goes just just flawless.

Speaker 4: Where like, no, not one, not one. Really there's always something. There's always something always with all that is, there's so many cables. One of them is broken along the way. I was at a radio station down in Cambridge and uh uh Somerville was Somerville And I forgot the mixer cable and Joel h had a power supply for me. Really it worked, Oh wow, and he came through for me.
