Field Dispatch
Despyre | Matt Connarton Unleashed
Speaker 1: As I like to say. If that doesn't get you
Speaker 1: move in check your pulse, you might be dead. That
Speaker 1: is so good. That is faithless. The band is Despire,
Speaker 1: and we've got Rob, the vocalist from Despire here on
Speaker 1: the line with us.
Speaker 2: Rob. Rob.
Speaker 1: How do you say your last name?
Speaker 2: By the way, Melvagna, Well that's the americanized way in Italy,
Speaker 2: the g is silent Melvano.
Speaker 1: Oh, Melvano. Okay, all right, very good, very good. By
Speaker 1: the way, is it just you r Do you have
Speaker 1: any of your bandmates with you or are we just
Speaker 1: talking to you right now?
Speaker 2: No, it's it's just just me right now. Sorry, they're
Speaker 2: all listening on the link.
Speaker 1: Oh okay, okay, cool, well, yeah, welcome to the show.
Speaker 1: Like I said, I love that track. And is this
Speaker 1: so the name Despire? That's a Is that a combination
Speaker 1: of despair and inspire? Is that correct?
Speaker 2: Yes, it is. You know, we wanted to take the
Speaker 2: two emotions of you know, the lowest of the lows
Speaker 2: and the highest of the highs, you know, and kind
Speaker 2: of put it together and you know, come up with
Speaker 2: that made up name there. But you know, we because
Speaker 2: everybody goes through that, you know, and that's kind of
Speaker 2: what leads you to either be successful or you know,
Speaker 2: to deal with your problems in life, right you know,
Speaker 2: so we wanted to take those two emotions and combine
Speaker 2: them right.
Speaker 1: Right now, that makes sense. And you guys have been
Speaker 1: together since twenty fifteen, is that right?
Speaker 2: Yep?
Speaker 1: So I love it.
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, we we've played with each other before this.
Speaker 2: You know, we've all been very good friends in the industry,
Speaker 2: and we've played in formations of other bands, and then
Speaker 2: then we happened to get together and stuck jamming and
Speaker 2: writing some music. And one of our earlier songs, which
Speaker 2: is on our first EP, Black, the song is got
Speaker 2: in the hands of Joey Z from Life of Agony,
Speaker 2: who reached out and said, you know, I like this,
Speaker 2: what are you guys doing? I'd love to record some
Speaker 2: of your new stuff, and hence that's what led to
Speaker 2: our first DP Irritation, which Joey's from My Fagne produced,
Speaker 2: which inevitably got us signed to Pavement Records.
Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I mean connecting with Joey Z. That's uh.
Speaker 1: You guys got off to a great start early on.
Speaker 1: That's that's amazing. Life of Agne, Agony of course, such
Speaker 1: a great band. But oh that's that's uh so cool.
Speaker 1: I mean you probably learned a lot from him, I
Speaker 1: would imagine, Uh yeah, you know what.
Speaker 2: Was great was you know, I was a Life of
Speaker 2: Agony fan, you know before that, and I learned a
Speaker 2: lot from him, not only in the studio but just
Speaker 2: in general in life itself. You know, he's a very
Speaker 2: down throat guy. We became friends, you know, so it
Speaker 2: was a big eye opener on how things had done
Speaker 2: in an industry and how he brought out, you know,
Speaker 2: certain aspects of the band and recording. You know, we
Speaker 2: just worked well together.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. And then now tell us about so
Speaker 1: present day Faithless. I know that's the newest that came
Speaker 1: out pretty recently, right, the new single Faithless.
Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know we aren't with Pavement any longer.
Speaker 2: You know, things happened in twenty twenty with COVID. You know,
Speaker 2: the band itself went through a lot of changes and
Speaker 2: unfortunate deaths. In our first drummer passed away, and then
Speaker 2: family members, mothers, fathers. After COVID, and then I had
Speaker 2: a health scare. I was diagnosed with cancer, went through
Speaker 2: my treatments and in this process a drummer that was
Speaker 2: with us. We had about seven songs that we had written,
Speaker 2: so Griffin went in the studio recorded the drums because
Speaker 2: we you know, we knew that we were going to
Speaker 2: be coming back out once I got to clear and okay,
Speaker 2: you know, we started recording some songs and it was
Speaker 2: time to release them, you know. And now we have
Speaker 2: big news coming up in the upcoming weeks. We have
Speaker 2: some offers on the tape that we will be announcing
Speaker 2: shortly for these upcoming singles that will be released.
Speaker 1: Oh, excellent, excellent. As far as the cancer, I mean,
Speaker 1: you're you're you free and clear now clear of it?
Speaker 2: Yeah, right now. I reached one hundred perc REMISSIONO. So
Speaker 2: things are looking good, you know. And it it just
Speaker 2: made me stronger as a person and to move forward,
Speaker 2: you know, and do what I love.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, that's good for you. I'm glad to hear that. Wow. Yeah.
Speaker 1: And you guys have been through a lot, I mean obviously. Yeah.
Speaker 1: It's interesting how COVID even even now in twenty twenty six,
Speaker 1: it it comes up in a lot of conversations on
Speaker 1: the show because it just affected so many people. And
Speaker 1: you know, when you're when your whole thing is especially
Speaker 1: if you're playing live music, you know, it really it
Speaker 1: really affected.
Speaker 2: Uh and that's everything exactly. That's kind of what happened.
Speaker 2: You know, the momentum of the band was really going well,
Speaker 2: and uh, you know, the world stopped. Yeah, and we're
Speaker 2: not Metallica, you know what I mean. So it's like
Speaker 2: starting over again.
Speaker 1: Absolutely, especially where you are too, because you're in New
Speaker 1: York and and uh man, I mean New York City
Speaker 1: really got hit hard. Well, I mean that was that
Speaker 1: was really for a while. That was kind of the
Speaker 1: epicenter in the country for for COVID nineteen. It just
Speaker 1: just just awful. Are you guys ever everybody who's in
Speaker 1: the band now, are you all from New York? Uh?
Speaker 2: Yeah, we're all from Long Island, New York. You know,
Speaker 2: like I said, we've been brothers forever. You know, it
Speaker 2: feels like, you know, it's like having another marriage. But
Speaker 2: we're all great friends. You know, we're all within you know,
Speaker 2: a half hour of each other. Yeah, a couple of
Speaker 2: guys live very close and then the rest of us
Speaker 2: are within twenty minutes of a half hour of each other.
Speaker 2: And then recently we just announced that the newest member,
Speaker 2: our newest drummer. She is incredible. Bobby Dima went through
Speaker 2: a lot of auditions and drummers and she just is
Speaker 2: filling the gap and bringing a whole new energy to
Speaker 2: the band. So, you know, I just wanted to give
Speaker 2: a formal welcome to her on the air.
Speaker 1: Oh very cool. Yeah, congratulations to her. That's awesome. That's awesome.
Speaker 1: Do you feel like, I'm curious, being from New York
Speaker 1: and such a part of the scene there, do you
Speaker 1: feel like New York has shaped your sound because it's
Speaker 1: such a rich history of heavy music coming out of
Speaker 1: that area. And we had a actually just recently, we
Speaker 1: had Frequency Overload on the show, and you know, they're
Speaker 1: from there obviously, and they're amazing. But I mean, does
Speaker 1: do you think is there I guess what I'm trying
Speaker 1: to ask is is there a New York sound as
Speaker 1: far as heavy music, like what you guys are doing.
Speaker 1: Is there a New York sound? And are you what
Speaker 1: you do?
Speaker 2: It's a great question because I actually think there is,
Speaker 2: you know, and it goes way back to the days
Speaker 2: of you know, when the thrash metal and s female,
Speaker 2: when you had like bands like Anthrax, and then the
Speaker 2: hard course s with like Biohazard and Life of Agony,
Speaker 2: you know, and Sheer Terror and all these bands that
Speaker 2: came out of the area. And then of course there
Speaker 2: was the glam movement too, you know, New York Dolls
Speaker 2: and Kiss, and so I think the East Coast in general,
Speaker 2: New York area and up towards your area, it's it's
Speaker 2: a it's a different roarer, more in your face, I feel,
Speaker 2: style of music, you know. So yeah, I do think
Speaker 2: even though music has changed tremendously, and and the scene
Speaker 2: itself has changed tremendously, not just here in New York
Speaker 2: but throughout the United States. You know, in the old days,
Speaker 2: there was so many clubs and everybody came out to
Speaker 2: see music, and that was the only way was to
Speaker 2: go to see bands live. You know. Nowadays with social
Speaker 2: media and YouTube, you don't have to go anywhere. You know,
Speaker 2: everything's there right the ship to your thing is. But
Speaker 2: I think that you definitely can tell the sound of
Speaker 2: our music and where we're from geographically. So I do
Speaker 2: do feel that there is a certain and sound it
Speaker 2: comes out of New York. It's the aggression, it's the
Speaker 2: in your face, you know, and then just the way
Speaker 2: of living out here, the fast paced and of society
Speaker 2: in general, and people are so stressed and it comes
Speaker 2: out in the music.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, What is your so for the track Faithless,
Speaker 1: which which again I love it, it's just so good.
Speaker 1: Is this part of a larger project now? I mean,
Speaker 1: do you have a because there's so many different ways
Speaker 1: to release music now. Is is it part of an
Speaker 1: EP or an album or are you just releasing singles
Speaker 1: at this point? What's what's kind of your your plan?
Speaker 2: Okay, so you hit it on the head. I mean
Speaker 2: like music has changed, you know. No longer are the
Speaker 2: days of where I can run to the store and
Speaker 2: I was waiting for that Iron Maiden record to come out,
Speaker 2: hit the album cover and I wanted to read the
Speaker 2: liner notes and you know, immerse myself in it while
Speaker 2: I was into music. So, you know, people unfortunately, people's
Speaker 2: attention span is a lot less nowadays, and they want
Speaker 2: not so much instant gratification, but they want to hear
Speaker 2: a song and they want to move on to the
Speaker 2: next you know, band and put it in their playlist.
Speaker 2: So we what we plan on doing moving forward right
Speaker 2: now is we will be releasing singles as they come up,
Speaker 2: and then as we finish writing them, and then our
Speaker 2: plan is once we release these next group of writings
Speaker 2: that we had, we're gonna put together an EP or
Speaker 2: an album of them, so everybody can get it as
Speaker 2: like a special order or through a company or whatever.
Speaker 2: This way they can have everything encompassed in in a
Speaker 2: CD vinyl. But the initial release is going to be
Speaker 2: based on singles. You know, everyone of Thespire songs, aside
Speaker 2: from the first couple albums, they each song is different,
Speaker 2: you know. So if you think a listen to our
Speaker 2: songs when we write, they will have a different feel,
Speaker 2: different emotions, or a different story to tell. Okay, I
Speaker 2: think we did that intentionally. We didn't want to be auditional.
Speaker 2: This album sounds like this. The new single that will
Speaker 2: be dropping the beginning of August and of July is
Speaker 2: a total different sound for us. It's still heavy and
Speaker 2: it's dark, but it's different. It's in a different direction
Speaker 2: from the rest of the music that we have out.
Speaker 1: Okay, okay, Yeah, you're your trajectory as far as the singles,
Speaker 1: and then eventually, you know, they coalesce into an EP.
Speaker 1: That's that's how a lot of artists seem to be
Speaker 1: doing it now too. It's kind of the kind of
Speaker 1: the inverse of what it used to be. You know,
Speaker 1: when I was growing up, it was you know, a
Speaker 1: band might release a single for an upcoming album. Single
Speaker 1: goes to radio six eight weeks before the album comes out.
Speaker 1: Then the album comes out, and then if everything goes well,
Speaker 1: you know, there might be a second single, there might
Speaker 1: be a third single. But now a lot of artists
Speaker 1: are doing it, you know, the inverse of that, like
Speaker 1: you described, you know, you release a series of singles
Speaker 1: that will eventually coalesce into an EP or an album.
Speaker 1: Just kind of the and it you know, and it
Speaker 1: makes sense. You know, you got to feed the algorithm.
Speaker 1: You got to keep people interested and uh.
Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah, you have to be relevant. You know, you
Speaker 2: have to keep it exactly what you said. You have
Speaker 2: to keep it rolling. You know, a good a good
Speaker 2: food of thought is you know, every five to six
Speaker 2: weeks if you can, you know, if you have the
Speaker 2: music written, you know, try to release something. You've got
Speaker 2: to keep yourself in everybody's face, right, And that's kind
Speaker 2: of how the music business is now. Yeah, it's not
Speaker 2: a collective work because an album people aren't going to
Speaker 2: listen to it unfortunately for you know, another two years.
Speaker 2: So you got to keep yourself relevant by throwing things out.
Speaker 1: Yeah, and what's the live, uh kind of touring situation
Speaker 1: for you guys, because obviously you're in an area where, uh,
Speaker 1: you know, there's there's such a great array of venues
Speaker 1: you can play out. Imagine, you know, it's such a
Speaker 1: vibrant scene there in New York. Are you guys playing
Speaker 1: out a lot? Are you doing a lot of shows?
Speaker 1: You're going on tour? What's what's been happening there?
Speaker 2: Well, we so before all this happened, you know, we
Speaker 2: were ramping up. We did a tour of Boba Flex
Speaker 2: and then we toured Canada and the Northeast with Life
Speaker 2: of Agony. So we were ramping up and we were
Speaker 2: just about ready to do a European leg and get
Speaker 2: into the festivals. And then, like we were talking before,
Speaker 2: Bam COVID hit. So our trajectory now is we're we're
Speaker 2: building up the fan base. If a good tour came up,
Speaker 2: you know, obviously it would be on the table, but
Speaker 2: we are really looking for a lot of like fly dates.
Speaker 2: We're trying to get into the festival scene. You know,
Speaker 2: we do want to actually come up to your area.
Speaker 2: We're looking into New Hampshire. We have right now, we're
Speaker 2: all working on dates in New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina.
Speaker 2: We have a show which is our comeback show on
Speaker 2: Long Island October sixteenth in New York. That's a Friday night.
Speaker 2: That is our next show that we have on the books. Yeah,
Speaker 2: you know, that's kind of where we're looking to be
Speaker 2: right now. The scene here, you know, and I'm sure
Speaker 2: it's it's kind of like that everywhere. Unfortunately for original music,
Speaker 2: it's it's very hard. It's not like it used to be.
Speaker 2: Every club, every bar wants cover bands and tribute bands
Speaker 2: now taking nothing away from those bands. You know, the
Speaker 2: club owners they don't care anymore honestly about promoting original music.
Speaker 2: It's all about, you know, the money and how what
Speaker 2: they can put in their pockets and how many people
Speaker 2: you can get through the door, and you know, and
Speaker 2: it's changeable. Back in the day, I'm sure you remember
Speaker 2: in the eighties. I mean, people went out to see
Speaker 2: music they didn't know. They wanted to reach out and
Speaker 2: find new bands and new things that would turn them on.
Speaker 2: And it's kind of not like that anymore. So you
Speaker 2: have to your job as someone in a band is
Speaker 2: a lot harder now, you know, from from my perspective.
Speaker 1: Yeah, well now you're competing with so much. You know,
Speaker 1: you're you're competing with Netflix and and uh and YouTube
Speaker 1: and and uh, you know, and and gaming and and
Speaker 1: all of it. There's there's so many things now. There's
Speaker 1: a lot more things that you can do at home now, uh,
Speaker 1: instead of going out that you couldn't do before. So
Speaker 1: so that's that's always a challenge.
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, that's like what I said before. You know,
Speaker 2: people don't need they don't have to go to see
Speaker 2: a band. You know, radios are put on YouTube. They
Speaker 2: could sit in their house, not spend any money and
Speaker 2: watch a video of the band live or a live
Speaker 2: stream and there it is. Yeah, which to me takes
Speaker 2: away from the whole purpose of live music. I like
Speaker 2: the vibe with the audience and the sound of a
Speaker 2: bass drum just like crushing your your ribs, and when
Speaker 2: you're there, it's like you can't experience that sitting in
Speaker 2: your living room exactly.
Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I agree. I agree. So October sixteenth is
Speaker 1: the next show for you guys. And you've got some
Speaker 1: other opportunities coming up. It sounds like, so that's that's great.
Speaker 2: Yeah, we're we're working on a lot of opportunities that
Speaker 2: will be announced in the upcoming weeks. So we'll be
Speaker 2: around Okay, you know we're gonna be heading out there
Speaker 2: and then especially going into next year, in the next
Speaker 2: festival season, you know you'll be seeing this fire a
Speaker 2: lot more.
Speaker 1: Oh, fantastic, fantastic. In a in a moment, we'll we'll
Speaker 1: let you go and we're gonna play. I've got another
Speaker 1: track here that I'm gonna play at the end of
Speaker 1: our conversation, Blue Sky Reborn. You've got a this is
Speaker 1: really and this show is a different side of you guys.
Speaker 1: Great song, but you've also got a guest vocalist on this.
Speaker 2: Yeah, so Alicia Rose. You know, I thought that she
Speaker 2: had the perfect voice. She's a she's a local musician
Speaker 2: from our area, and she has a great tone to
Speaker 2: her voice. And the story of Blue Sky I felt
Speaker 2: in the band members in the band, we all discussed
Speaker 2: this and we felt that it would fit perfect with
Speaker 2: what we were looking to do. So the original song
Speaker 2: Blue Sky, which is on our EP, it was written
Speaker 2: based on. Unfortunately in my life I had about seven
Speaker 2: times happened to me. I had to deal with suicide.
Speaker 2: So when the song was written, it was about the
Speaker 2: what the people who are left behind have to deal
Speaker 2: with and how you need to find ways of moving forward.
Speaker 2: That's kind of what the song is about. And now
Speaker 2: it's also taken on if a loved one has passed,
Speaker 2: you know, how do I get through this? So we
Speaker 2: wanted an answer to that, you know, we thought, let's
Speaker 2: do this acoustics, show a different side of the band
Speaker 2: and show someone which is her part answering back to
Speaker 2: you when you're asking them. You know, I'm looking searching
Speaker 2: for blue Skies. You know, I miss your voice, and
Speaker 2: now this person is answering you back and kind of saying, look,
Speaker 2: everything's okay, nothing was your fault, but I'm here for you.
Speaker 2: So that's kind of what Blue Sky Reborn is about.
Speaker 1: Okay, okay, yeah, it's a it's a great song. And
Speaker 1: by the way, did you say so seven times you've
Speaker 1: you've dealt with the people you know who've committed suicide.
Speaker 2: Unfortunately, and they between family members and very close friends.
Speaker 2: You know, it's uh something, Depression is real, you know,
Speaker 2: a lot of times you don't you don't know it.
Speaker 2: With the people that are going through it, they kind
Speaker 2: of just do it, yeah, you know, and it catches
Speaker 2: it by surprise, you know. But there are places out there,
Speaker 2: people to talk to, you know, and and thank god
Speaker 2: I have music and and you know, that's one way
Speaker 2: myself and the band members can talk about things. But
Speaker 2: hopefully it touches something and someone else and they're able
Speaker 2: to hear something and it helps them. Part of being
Speaker 2: an artist, you know, you want to help people. But unfortunately, yes,
Speaker 2: I had, I had to deal with that. I don't
Speaker 2: I don't want to deal with it anymore, but you
Speaker 2: got to find way to continue.
Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, And no, and I like what you said
Speaker 1: about depression too, you know as someone who I myself.
Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not suicidal, but I do deal with depression.
Speaker 1: And it's you know, mental health is something that a
Speaker 1: lot of the stigma has gone I think is a
Speaker 1: lot of the stigma has faded, but it's still something
Speaker 1: that we probably don't talk about enough.
Speaker 2: And yeah, it's you know, people deal with anxiety and
Speaker 2: depression and the way society is and the best thing
Speaker 2: to do is find an outlet you know, ending your
Speaker 2: life is not the answer, right because life is beautiful,
Speaker 2: you know, as there are things nature, you know, the
Speaker 2: materialistic things in the world don't mean anything, you know, family, health,
Speaker 2: you know, and being able to just experience what you
Speaker 2: have and the good things in life, you know. So
Speaker 2: there's so many ways you could talk to your problems
Speaker 2: out nowadays, you know, So don't be afraid to ask
Speaker 2: for help, right.
Speaker 1: Right, very well, well said, very well? Said uh, Rob,
Speaker 1: before we let you go and we're going to hit
Speaker 1: that track. But where's the best place for people to
Speaker 1: go online to keep up with everything that Despire is doing.
Speaker 2: Dispire dot com is our website, but really social media yeah, Facebook, Instagram,
Speaker 2: you know, those are the best place. We have a
Speaker 2: social media presence. You know, we send out newsblasts, we're
Speaker 2: always posting, so you'll definitely be able to find Aspire.
Speaker 2: You know, you can google our name, you'll see all
Speaker 2: kinds of things about us. Yeah, we're on Spotify, all
Speaker 2: the major digital networks. You can you can download our
Speaker 2: music YouTube, so where around?
Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, Well that's another thing that's really changed, huh
Speaker 1: from before I it used to be social media. It
Speaker 1: changed everything.
Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, it's it's crazy and we we again,
Speaker 2: you know, I'll even I'd like to speak to you
Speaker 2: about it another day too. We do want to come
Speaker 2: up to New Hampshire. We actually started looking into it,
Speaker 2: so maybe we can sooner than later get ourselves up
Speaker 2: there and and bring our crazy show. Because a Thespire
Speaker 2: show is not just five guys and I want to
Speaker 2: say four guys and a young lady up on the stage.
Speaker 2: We put on an event because we come from the
Speaker 2: Iron Maiden. You know. To me, when you go see
Speaker 2: a band live, the music, yeah, you know, we want
Speaker 2: the music to be good, but do you want to
Speaker 2: shape reality? You know, you want to come see a.
Speaker 1: Show exactly That's what we do. Oh yeah, oh hell
Speaker 1: yeah yeah.
Speaker 2: Hopefully we'll be seeing you up in New Hampshire, in
Speaker 2: that New England area real soon, I hope.
Speaker 1: So I would love it. I would love it absolutely.
Speaker 1: All right, Rob, we'll let you go. We're going to
Speaker 1: hit that track Blue Sky Reborn. But thank you so
Speaker 1: much for joining us, and thank you for being flexible
Speaker 1: about the the WhatsApp and the phone line and everything.
Speaker 1: We appreciate that as.
Speaker 2: Well, no problem, Matt, and I want to thank you
Speaker 2: for your time and having to spire, you know, grace
Speaker 2: your airways and to speak with us. I appreciate it.
Speaker 1: Oh absolutely no, we appreciate you. Rob. All right, thank
Speaker 1: you so much, and I'm sure we'll talk again soon.
Speaker 2: We will, all right, see you that everybody, by bye?
Speaker 1: All right. That is Rob from the band Despire and
Speaker 1: again this track shows a different side of the band
Speaker 1: and their sound. But this is really good. This is
Speaker 1: Blue Sky Reborn with Alicia Rose is also on the
Speaker 1: track singing this is really good. Check this out.
