Do not try to sue Nelly | Matt Connarton Unleashed
Speaker 1: We talked about some music industry news, the latest chapter
Speaker 1: in the saga of Taylor Swift versus a podcaster who
Speaker 1: is suing her over the name life of a showgirl.
Speaker 1: And again I maintained my position that it is a
Speaker 1: terribly frivolous lawsuit and it's really silly. But unfortunately Maren
Speaker 1: Wade's legal team seems to have scored what could be
Speaker 1: a victory as they continue to push this forward. And
Speaker 1: I really thought it would get thrown out by now.
Speaker 1: So I'm pretty stunned. Yeah, I mean, like, why is
Speaker 1: it still here? I was listening to you on the
Speaker 1: way in and of course, but yeah, and here we
Speaker 1: are yet again appear well, I speaking of frivolous lawsuits.
Speaker 1: So this is something that popped up from a digitalmusicnews
Speaker 1: dot com filing frivolity against Nelly judge saddles attorney suing
Speaker 1: the rapper with a heavy fine. So there can be
Speaker 1: consequences for filing a frivolous lawsuit, it says here Ouch,
Speaker 1: the attorney who sued Nelly for allegedly excluding his former
Speaker 1: bandmates from credits for his wildly successful debut solo album
Speaker 1: Country Grammar, has been ordered to pay the rappers legal fees.
Speaker 1: Precious Felder Gates, that's the attorney's name, The attorney for
Speaker 1: former Funny parents, Precious Felder Gates, who would do that
Speaker 1: to their kid, The attorney for per former Saint Lunatic's member,
Speaker 1: Ali Jones. So if you don't know, if you don't know,
Speaker 1: Saint Lunatics, that's the sort of the supergroup that Nelly
Speaker 1: was a part of. The hip hop supergroup. They released
Speaker 1: I think multiple albums as Saint Lunatics, and I think
Speaker 1: they performed at the super Bowl as as or it
Speaker 1: was Nelly performing at the super Bowl but Saint Lunatics
Speaker 1: joined him or something I can't remember exactly. But so,
Speaker 1: the attorney for former Saint Lunatic's member Ali Jones, who
Speaker 1: launched litigation against Nelly, has been ordered to pay sixty seven,
Speaker 1: five hundred and eighty six dollars to reimburse the Country
Speaker 1: Grammar rapper for legal fees he incurred while battling the
Speaker 1: quote frivolous copyright lawsuit. So you know, think about that
Speaker 1: before you file a frivolous lawsuit against someone. You might
Speaker 1: end up paying the legal fees and it could really
Speaker 1: blow up in your face. Seriously, there should be more
Speaker 1: accountability to people that use the legal system as a
Speaker 1: vengeful weapon. Absolutely, Nelly's legal counsel Kennethy Freudblitch or Freundlich said, quote,
Speaker 1: courts have limited patients for litigation used as a weapon
Speaker 1: rather than a remedy. Frivolous litigation isn't free unquote. Filed
Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, the lawsuit originally claimed that Nelly
Speaker 1: intentionally excluded his former Saint Lunatic's bandmates from credits and
Speaker 1: royalties for his debut solo album Country Grammar. However, three
Speaker 1: members Murphy Lee, Kaiwan and City Spud immediately withdrew, stating
Speaker 1: they never authorized the case and wanted no involvement. Ultimately,
Speaker 1: Ali Jones dropped the suit in April last year after
Speaker 1: Nelly's team argued that it violated the three year statute
Speaker 1: of limitations. It's a tight statute of limitations three years.
Speaker 1: But Nelly and Universal Music Group ugh that that name
Speaker 1: comes up all the time UMG, we talk about lawsuits.
Speaker 1: They're always involved in lawsuits. Nelly and UMG quickly went
Speaker 1: to work seeking sanctions, legal penalties for a frivolous case,
Speaker 1: and reimbursement for unnecessary fees. Now, a federal judge is
Speaker 1: ruled that Jones's attorney must pay sixty seven, five hundred
Speaker 1: and eighty six dollars for more than one hundred and
Speaker 1: fifty hours of legal work done by Nelly's three lawyers.
Speaker 1: That's an insane amount of money. Wow. Though attorney Precious
Speaker 1: felder Gates posited that Nelly's demands were excessive, a judge
Speaker 1: largely rejected those arguments, ruling in October over that it
Speaker 1: should have been patently obvious that the case was doomed. Initially,
Speaker 1: Nelly's lawyers asked for seventy eight thousand and seven dollars,
Speaker 1: which Feldergates argued was unreasonable and that the hours worked
Speaker 1: were excessive, But the judge ruled that the case required
Speaker 1: detailed work and that the rates were in fact, quote
Speaker 1: in line with both the prevailing market rates and the
Speaker 1: rates charged by attorneys of similar experience unquote. So there
Speaker 1: you go. So maybe something like that will happen to
Speaker 1: Marin Wade or whatever her name is. The podcast there
