7:19 Speaker 9: I love that song, Pretty Girl? You know it's I really like your sound because your songs are they're very, very catchy, but also heavy, and not everyone can do catchy and heavy at the same time, you know what I mean?

You do the most work though, right, because you use all four of your limbs when you play, and you have to lug the most stuff. It's a team effort, right right, that's good. That's good, is it?

9:19 Speaker 9: Okay, okay, I don't know. I don't know Still Sleeping or Birds in Theory, but very cool, very cool. And then you guys playing out a lot, you're doing a lot of shows or what's what's kind of the live live situation?

9:30 Speaker 10: Like I feel like we haven't been doing many shows as of recently. We've been kind of focusing on recording new music. Yeah, we've got a music video coming out somewhat soon as well. Oh, so we've had a lot of focus on writing and everything, but uh, yeah, we're probably gonna try to book a lot more shows for the summer.

9:48 Speaker 9: Nice. What track is the video for that's coming out? It's for Why for Why? Okay, yeah, okay, and we're gonna play that. We'll play that in a few minutes. Yeah, very cool. Uh is this gonna be your first video as a band, your first.

10:07 Speaker 9: Oh, very good. Is it a concept or is it just you guys playing live or I don't know how much you want to divulge about it.

10:13 Speaker 10: Oh no, it's it's all good. Yeah, there's some concept we have who we call kind of our fifth member of the band, Devin Perry. He does our videos and he does our photography, Okay, so he also comes up with creative ideas for for videos. So it's kind of a little bit of an abstract idea. Yeah, we got a cool place over like in the Mills that we recorded in actually.

11:22 Speaker 9: Oh that's cool though. That's validation, right, Like to have a neighbor who wants to come and check out what you're doing. That's pretty cool.

11:36 Speaker 9: Now, the the tracks that we're playing today are these from an album from an e P or they just singles or because there's so many different ways now that artists are releasing music.

11:45 Speaker 10: Yeah, they're gonna be an upcoming EP.

11:47 Speaker 9: Oh so the EP is upcoming? Uh? Any idea when any kind of an et a?

11:52 Speaker 10: So we uh, we plan on releasing a single next Friday, and uh we we figure that, you know, may as well start plugging it here on the radio show. We haven't really talked about it much. Yeah, the EP is gonna be called the lunch Box EPA. And yeah, we're gonna be putting a single out. We don't have a release date quite yet for the actual EP itself. We're gonna start we're gonna start pushing that.

12:22 Speaker 10: The single? It's gonna be freaking me out?

12:25 Speaker 9: Oh right, right right, okay, yes, yes, I have I have a version of that are prepared that we can play on the show YEP.

12:37 Speaker 9: When I was listening to these, like I said, you know earlier, like I said at the end of Pretty Girl, you know, your songs are heavy, but they're catchy. And I really like that because, like I said, you know, most bands they try to kind of be one or the other, you know, and and so you got I mean it sounds like, you know, really a lot of effort, like who are the songwriters in the band? Because it's it's it sounds like you really put like you think about the craft of songwriting and it shows in your music, like who writes the songs?

13:01 Speaker 9: Or do you all right together?

13:03 Speaker 18: All?

13:03 Speaker 3: Yeah?

13:04 Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, all this stuff on the EP has been pretty much written by everybody at the same time.

13:11 Speaker 9: Yeah.

13:11 Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, we have a pretty big hand in it.

13:14 Speaker 12: No, that's great, that's great, I do. I will give credit where credit is due. Rob comes up with incredible melodies right out the jump. We y, we come up with a riff idea and the rest of us are jamming it out and he just sings gibberish the first time around. But he always gets an awesome melody right out the jump. So we always where we we videotape ourselves practicing. Yeah, so we can come back to that and make sure we don't lose that melody, you know.

13:40 Speaker 9: That's that's a smart thing. I was in a band. This was a long time ago. I was in a band called First Shove, and we had we had a couple of songs that we were trying to work on one day at practice and like we we found ourselves actually forgetting parts to one of them, and it was a conversation. There was a conversation about maybe we should start recording, you know, because we would tend to write at our rehearsals and kind of be you know, we'd practice if we had shows, but we'd also write stuff at the same time.

14:04 Speaker 9: And and uh yeah, there was a point where we were actually forgetting things and it's like, oh, that's really bad.

14:09 Speaker 11: Yeah. Yeah, that's why we always do some sort of a video.

14:12 Speaker 12: Yeah, and we have a shared Google drive too, so we we always post up those. Every one of the songs that we've ever written has like fifteen different versions on video of the progression towards you know, the finished product.

14:26 Speaker 9: Yeah. That's a really good idea. Yeah, that's really smart. It helps, Yeah, definitely. You guys want to play another song, another track?

14:34 Speaker 9: Yeah, so what should we do next?

14:42 Speaker 13: Yeah, that was the first one that we released at the beginning in like February or March of twenty twenty four. Okay, the version that we're hearing now is going to sound a little different than the one that we released.

14:57 Speaker 11: Oh no, chorded some stuff.

15:00 Speaker 9: Cool okay, okay, And I'm just I'm always so curious about this kind of thing. Well, why did you decide to do that? What did they just not come out so?

15:07 Speaker 11: The songs with Eric at Blackheart Sound.

15:11 Speaker 16: Oh.

15:11 Speaker 9: Eric, so his name, his name comes up on the show almost.

15:15 Speaker 11: On a weekly basis. Literally one of the coolest people on the planet. Absolute Eric.

15:21 Speaker 20: Yeah.

15:21 Speaker 17: But we did three songs with them, and then we're like, you know, maybe let's go back and do a couple more. And then when we started doing the other three that are going to be on the EP, the drum sound was just so different, really, and it sounded so much better, and we were like, you know what, let's let's make it that way.

15:35 Speaker 11: It's all consistent. Yeah, and it just came out so much better.

15:38 Speaker 13: We learned a lesson there, which would be, if we think we're not going to just do three songs, we might as well just do it all at once.

15:45 Speaker 15: And then that way folks do it day here, day here, day here.

15:50 Speaker 9: You just get a week and do it.

15:51 Speaker 11: All at once.

The band is The Doldrums, and we've got the band the Doldrums here with us alive in studio on this Saturday morning here at WMNH And uh yeah, I love that track. That is really good, really really good. Do you guys how many how many songs do you guys have? Like, do you have additional songs that you play live that that are not yet recorded or.

19:28 Speaker 12: Not yet recorded. No, there are additional songs that we do play live. There was actually, well, there was a previous release from the band before me, Tom and the drummer Rob were in the band.

19:44 Speaker 11: They had a I think it was a four track of five track.

19:47 Speaker 13: Yeah, we had a there was a previous iteration that were me and Rob singer Rob, and we released a four song EP with a couple guys back in twenty twenty.

20:00 Speaker 10: Twenty twenty. Yeah, we started the band of twenty eighteen. That's before we had these new handsome gentlemen here. Oh, Tom and drummer. Yeah, so twenty eighteen and then like we kicked out a couple of members because thee not good people.

20:15 Speaker 15: Oh, we had a hiatus a while.

20:19 Speaker 11: Sounds like there's a story there.

20:21 Speaker 10: Oh, there's definitely a story there with a long story.

20:24 Speaker 9: One you can tell her.

20:26 Speaker 11: Probably not probably would I would go with probably, yeah.

20:29 Speaker 10: Probably.

20:30 Speaker 9: I'm always looking for the dirt always, maybe not on air, yeah, always looking for the for the dirt, but you know, off air dirt is the next best thing. Yeah, selfishly. Okay, By the way, so where does a name come from? The doldrums?

20:46 Speaker 10: It's like al I came up with it. I mean like twenty eighteen when I started the bands, I like heard of the word and I was like, that would make a cool band name. It's like the the meaning of doldrums is like the part of the ocean where like boats like can't win there's like no wind, so they kind of sink.

21:07 Speaker 9: I didn't know that was the etymology of the term. Yeah.

21:09 Speaker 10: So it's kind of like people say like I'm in the dol rooms, meaning like you know, they're almost like being like depressed.

21:15 Speaker 11: No progress yeaeah, okay, just a bunch of sad boys.

21:21 Speaker 15: A fitting uting name.

21:22 Speaker 9: Yeah yeah, yeah. I mean, while I don't know, the music's pretty high energy now, it's not like I didn't. I didn't know quite what to expect when I saw the name of the Doldrums. I thought it might be punk. I thought it might be like, you know, kind of more stoner metal. I don't know, how do you guys describe for people who haven't heard heard your sound? Like, how do you how do you describe it?

21:40 Speaker 15: That's really I don't think we know anything difficult.

21:42 Speaker 10: It's like its like I, at least personally have a lot of like garage rock influence. Yeah, so I kind of like try to show that in the band. I think we have some of that sound in there.

21:53 Speaker 21: Yeah.

21:55 Speaker 11: Yeah, it's really hard, but it kind of like started off as it was supposed to be, like funk.

22:00 Speaker 17: When I joined the band, that was kind of metal drummer. Yeah, I was a very heavy drummer and they were looking for that. And I think when I joined the band, I kind of got away from the surf punk thing, and I think we just kind of meshed.

22:13 Speaker 12: Yeah, so I do think we still dip back into the surf punk surf punk roots every once in a while.

22:18 Speaker 9: But yeah, yeah, I mean I can hear that. I can hear that mix of influences, and I can actually imagine you guys doing a surf punk song, you know.

22:27 Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, I can hear that, and.

22:29 Speaker 17: I think that's why it's it's so like, you know, we have some tracks that are very heavy and then they're very melodic. Yeah, like we we kind of just thrive off each other with that.

22:37 Speaker 5: Yeah.

22:37 Speaker 9: So is there anybody in the area that you guys play a lot of shows with, you know, it kind of happens organically sometimes, yeahs yeah.

22:49 Speaker 12: Definitely, granitears okay, yeah yeah, but I mean, honestly, we haven't played that many live shows overall. Yeah, it's we we We've spent a lot of time on this EP. Yeah, yeah, going into the studio and getting these recordings.

23:06 Speaker 5: Yeah.

23:07 Speaker 9: What's interesting about you guys doing a lot of shows with the Regels is obviously they have a very different sound than you. Yeah, but but they're interesting too, and that they've got like a real like you can hear a lot of different influences in their music as well as great and it's but yeah, they are so good. It was just the well we had them on the show. It was just the two guys came in and played live, but it was was so good.

23:28 Speaker 9: But we saw them. We met them at the Shasking Jenny and I did, uh originally right, it was that was the first time we'd met them, right the Shasking that night. Yeah, yeah, because Jenny's son Jesse, was playing there at Jesse Coffee and that was Yeah, that was the first time we'd met Regels and it was like, wow, I don't know if it was the full Oh no, wait, didn't we meet them before that at Mosaic Mosaic Arts Studio. That was the full band that was playing that night. Yeah, yeah, but they're uh, they're really really good.

23:56 Speaker 9: What are what are kind of the long term plans as far as you guys are, are you looking to tour? Like do you were? I know you haven't played a ton of shows yet, but are you looking to to kind of get on the road or what's what's really.

24:07 Speaker 11: Talked about touring?

24:09 Speaker 12: We are submitting for a contest with this music video that we just made, and I mean the prize being a stage at Warped Tour, like playing at warp So I mean fingers crossed obviously a.

24:24 Speaker 5: Little bit of a long.

24:26 Speaker 15: Might as well try.

24:27 Speaker 10: I believe we can do it.

24:29 Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, I believe you can too. That would be cool. I can imagine you guys have warped tour. Definitely.

25:27 Speaker 12: All over the place, but a little bit of a Latin beat in there, a little bit of a circus jem Okay, yeah, yeah.

25:36 Speaker 10: It's got a little bit of everything to be honest.

25:39 Speaker 9: Okay, definitely a strange one for us, Okay. And what went into the decision to make this the next single? Any any method to that or do you just really like the track?

25:48 Speaker 11: It's how it always happens. We were in the studio and I get done with my parts, and all of a sudden, they go, well, we got a little bit of time, you want to maybe try to lay down some drum.

25:56 Speaker 10: Tracks for this.

25:58 Speaker 11: Take, And I'm like, we'll see if we do. And then all of a sudden, it just became like our favorite every yeah, yeah, yeah, every song becomes our new favorite song.

26:08 Speaker 13: And we're also like pushing what like the envelope of what we've been doing with each new song, Like everything's been getting weirder and crazier. We're kind of finding our sound a little more, especially with the songs that we're working on now, like it's starting to come into place.
