Matt Connarton Unleashed: The Pop Farmers
Game Plan
Pattie McGee, there's a peddler break now. He peddled his wares from town
to town, get an old Johnny wagon and filled to the brim, freaking
some treasures. They were mild of within, But he had what Jemmy never
said. Kathleen McGee husy apple mais eyes. She had raven black hair,
eyes blue as the sky. The young girl's beautty was known far and wide
for twenty our years. She rode by inside when our cursber I do.
I'm in love with the fatless daughter. She mastered every trigger Dad he taught
her. I swore work and stop until I caught her. But I'm in
love with the beggar's daughter. For three long years I tried to catch her.
I needed to prove I was just some other guy. So every week
when they come to town, I grabbed my money and I laid it down.
I spent every shilling that I had. A Week after week, we
play that game. She'd take all my money, forget my name, but
little I wear her down until last day she finally comes around. She'll look
at me and she'll know I'm in love with the bad your's daughter. Like
a drowning man, trying to treadwater like a lamb being led to the slaughter.
I'm in love with that last daughter. As hard as I tried,
she resistude my charms until that one night she fell into my arms. In
night, sweet moment, you let me down the guard. You just stand,
you roll underneath the stars. She looked deep into my eyes at me
with the I lost every time a foer. She's sold there to give Dion.
We've got a great show for you today. What's that? Oh?
Yes, Uh, We've got joining us in studio. And I want to
have the website in front of me because I want to give these guys the
proper introduction. The band is the Pop Farmers. Uh. We have Dan
Demo Moran? Is it? Uh? Oh, let me get those mics
up? Is it more or more Moran? It's Moran, but Moran?
All right, Dan Demo Moran. We have Gary mister Brightside blazedel and Tyler
Timo Moran or Moran. I'm sorry, Yeah, Gary, Gary's actually not
here. That's Gary Gary. He was he was kind of lazy today.
I'm sorry. It's it's it's Jimmy three pints mahoney. Sorry, I apologize.
Well, I tried to. I tried to give you the intro,
but I wanted to get the yes. So you guys are now Two of
you have been on the show before with other projects, but this is the
first time the Pop Farmers have been here. And this is a busy time
of year for you guys, right, Yeah, March is typically our busy
season because we're pretty much just a classic rock cover band that plays in a
lot of Irish bars. So we ended up learning a lot of Irish songs.
So yeah, yeah, we could play every every day this week if
we want. And that uh, that song we played a few minutes ago,
the Peddler's Daughter That's now Is that an original or is that a classic
Irish song? No? I wrote Tyler and I wrote that one. Oh
very cool. Yeah, no, that's really good. We have another studio
track too that we'll play. Uh, we'll play a bit later in the
show. Patrick, uh uh Hootieturier Pat in the chat room. He says,
well, I'm hearing Dan's track, so so he's able to hear everything.
But you're in the right place. Yeah, so you can you can
still chat in there. Let's uh, you guys want to play something for
us, and unfortunately, you know, we'll have to kind of sound check
on the fly, but I will. Uh. I'm used to riding the
faders in here. But uh yeah, you guys, you guys want to
play something? Sure? Ye me, Mom? When I gave home and
the boys won't the girls alone my hair and stole my cold, that's all
right, and get home. She is handsome, She is pretty. She
is a bell of belt test. She is a curtain once too free?
Please, can I tell me who wish? She? Albert? Who?
He says he loves her? Around? The boys are faith for her,
knocking the door and ring the melt, singing out to love. Are you
alb? How she comes? That's why that stole with ring full fingers and
belts on the door. Don't anybody peaca. She'll die if she don't get
the full up in the room. Then I'm gonna tell me, mom,
when I get home, the boys won't be the girls along, got my
hair and stole my comb, And that's all right, And I get home.
She is handsome, She is pretty good. She is a bell of
belt testing. She is a curtain. Once you free, We're gonna tell
me who wished looking We're gonna read in the help o high and this book
comes to little from the sky. That's meis I will find she'll get her
own look by and by witching up. It's so maddom. Won't you tell
them all when she gets hold lift them off the massive will it's al her?
She looks up and tell you mom, when I get home. The
boys walked me either or some want my hair and stole my comb. But
that's all high till I get home. And she is handsome, she is
great, She is a bell. I'm I'm messy. She is have to
want your freak and pleasing and tell me wi she albert, He said she
loves her own them as our fight before her knocking the door, ring the
bell, singing out to them. Are you out? How? She cook
said? Want with use bells? Don't said she'll die if you don't build
them on the roof. Then I tell you when I get home, girls
my haris don't not call. But that's all right. So now you're home.
She is handsome, she is breaking. She is the bell. I'm
betting she is the crtain wants in. Please gonna tell me wh oh you
gotta sound amazing? That was fantastic. That was fantastic. If you're just
joining us, we have the Pop Farmers here with us alive in the studio.
Here are three three quarters of the Pop Farmers. Wait, so is
it usually four of you when when you play live or does it kind of
vary or it's usually four of us? Yeah? Yeah, sometimes we stuffed
three people in just because it's we got to play some pretty small places.
But yeah, yeah, which usually a pretty pretty powerful quartet. Yeah,
yeah, no, you guys, you guys sound fantastic. How long has
this project existed? How long has the Pop Farmer's been around? You mean
I've been doing the Pop Farmers. Actually, next year will be our twentieth
year. We started in two thousand and five, kidd and Tyler came on
about ten years ago. Maybe, yeah, yeah, I I my my
wife did some travel nursing, so when I left, we were gone for
nine months, and Tyler took over the bass playing role. And then when
I came back, somebody else quit the band and he decided to stay.
So he's been with us ever since. Oh, very nice, very plus
you know, you know you know him from The Fox and the Flamingos.
Yes, yes, and you were here with Litter Tooth. Glitter Tooth.
Yes, it's hard to keep it all straight. There's so many people in
so many different bands all at once. Yeah, Jimmy, are you in
other bands? Now? I'm the only monogamous he's he's actually been the only
one that's been in the band all twenty years because no one else will take
me because I was out for nine months, but I came back. Now,
you know what's fascinating about this, So Jimmy is usually it's the drummer
who's in like ten different bands. Yeah, I was thinking, yeah,
yeah, that's that's been my experience doing these interviews. It's usually, you
know, because drummers are in such high demand. I could hear the first
monogamous drummer. Yeah. We love him so much. We won't let him
go anywhere else. You just we keep them for ourselves. Yeah, I
can see why. Gracie Wright joins us in the chat room. Jenny's taking
pictures in video, right, what and you miss you miss seeing Jimmy's handsome
face? Then that's right. I have a radio. That's what Matt said.
Oh you guys want to play another one? Yeah, you sound amazing.
I'm down here another one. Yeah, we don't play just just Irish
music, so we're going to do. This is Steve Earle song and it's
get oh I love because it kind of sounds Irish anyways. Okay, will
my name's John leave petmore save as my daddy again and daddy before? Well
you hotly have a song, grand daddy out here. You only come to
town about the wise five hundred pounds of east. It's a conference. Everybody
knew it made moonshine will the revenue mad wanna brand, Daddy bad handed up
the Hollywood him a thing he had over my time. And I'm been told
you you never come back from Comperhead Road. My danner and whiskey and a
big block dodge bollered in an Oxychtomies Lodge, Shaunton County Sheriff beat it on
the side, just shot go to primary and his oop inside well him and
my uncle too. That engine't have I still remember that crumble inside been the
sheriff feed around in the middle of the back. Heard by my grind or
something wasn't right. He ano the weak loved you smell it whiskey heard of
down comfor heead rouge Hey moll dead on the ummy on my birthday, grabbed
white transfers round here anyway, don't you to the duty and me it dow
and I came home with a brand new plan. Take a seed from Columbia,
mixing cold, just planting down the hollidayn Copperhead rule another. He's got
a jumper in the air, wake up screens and like, I'm back over
there, murn the thing in to them from Charley. Don't you know that's
lay away from Comperhead Proof. Hey, cumber Head Row, comber Head Row,
Hey, cumber Head Roll. I love seaverl. You definitely did them
justice. That was great. That was great. If you're just joining us,
we have the pop Farmers live in studio with us, and uh,
what you guys must have a show tonight somewhere I would assume, right,
we have one last night. That's where we're kind of a little groggy.
Oh, but we have two tomorrow. So we're playing nine o'clock, no,
eleven o'clock, eleven o'clock in the morning over Haverol, Massachusetts at the
Peddler's daughter Yea, from eleven to three three, and then we kind of
I tail it over to Nashua Peddler's Donner and play from seven to ten.
Oh wow, Jimmy is Jimmy keeps track of where we go? I just
now is there? Uh? I assume Saint Patrick says, the one time
of year where you would actually do shows in the morning, right, Yeah,
that's yeah. We don't do too many eleven o'clock. That's why when
we when we booked this going nine o'clock in the morning, right right after
the night before. Yeah, yeah, very cool. How many? Uh
can you guys even put a number on how many songs? You know?
You probably know like a ton of songs, right, Yeah, our list
is pretty big, but we although invariably we get somebody requested a song and
we don't know it. Oh really to get mad? Yeah, Like,
dude, I know a lot of songs I don't know all right, Yeah,
I tyler deals with them better than I really. Yeah, yet,
depending on how you ask them usually yeah, yeah, I'm a little more
diplomatic tylers. We don't. Yeah, somehow I became the enforcer. Really,
so sorry if I've turned you down, but we don't know it.
We don't know it right right exactly? Including the Irish stuff. Be well,
over. It's almost a hundred songs at least. We still get you
know, people requesting Irish songs and we, like I said, we're a
bar band. We play some Irish songs. Yeah, all of them.
Yeah, sometimes people get really snooty about it. Oh you don't know that
song? Like, sorry, I'll learn it for next time. Right.
Yeah, it's it's a fun day and it's kind of like doing battle,
but it's it's a it's a long slog during the day, so but it's
a good it's a good fight. Yeah, let's see don Sylvia's in the
chat room. Hello. Also, Patrick says, you can't see what I'm
doing an Irish jig right now, we can always trust he's a good dancer,
Gracie says. McKenzie says, hi Dad to Jim McKenzie. McKenzie very
nice, very nice. Uh, Diane uh says, uh, I'm not
it's not officially Saint Pat's Day until the pop farmers play. Oh, thanks,
very nice, very nice. Now, you guys do have some original
music and and we'll uh, well, we'll play another studio track a little
bit later. But do you have a have you recorded much or do you
do you just have a few what you've done, Tyler and I during the
two songs that you're playing. Tyler and I during COVID, we decided I
had like five, five or six songs that I had written pretty much musically,
but I had no words to him. Yeah, so I figured during
COVID we had nothing to do. So I called Tyler and said, hey,
let's go in the studio. So then we called some of our friends
and we just recorded an album of original songs under the name Moran Moran instead
of Duran Duran Oh so Moran Moran oh cool. Called our buddies and we
have got in the Board's house studios and Brookline. Ye, he beat Pete
pell when he's he's awesome. He did all our work and he it was.
It was a great fun. We, like I said, we we
would just go in the two of us work on the songs and then call
up our friends and say, hey, can you play whatever on this song?
Yeah, play drums, are played, play bass, and we actually
the first song you played, we actually shipped some of it out to our
friends in California. Our friend Bobo, he played accordion on it. His
wife Tracy played bass, and I think We had a Geo Hennessy. She
played violin, so okay, normally we didn't have that. We don't.
I don't know anybody else who plays accordion, so that's called bobo. Say
can you play a cordion in this? And he did so it was Moran
and Friends. Yes, I like that. Yeah, we'll have to check
that out. Very nice, very nice. Did you guys want to play
another another live one for us? Sure? We got the pop Farmers here
with us live and studio on this Saint Patrick Stay weekend, all right,
yeah, we'll do another Irish song the Black Velvet Band. Sure. And
before we do the whole lot of Things of your Shadow. Our friend Cameron
Thomas. He he plays with a the band called the Incidentals, and he
led Jimmy this home kit that he has today. Very coolie. Jimmy has
a big Neil Perk kit that has drums. You wouldn't fit in this room.
But no, no, Cameron, if you're listening, some one of
those chairs just strap in. We made him flush. We flip them upside
down sometimes. Tommy Lee yep. At town the call felt Fast Apprentice to
Trade, I was bound and many on our Sweet Happy husband in that sweet
little town, until sad misfortune came over me and forced me a straight from
the land, far away from my friends and reliation, to follow the black
belt in band. Her eyes they so like the diamonds you think she was
queen of the lamb. Had her hair hung over her should holders tied up
with a black belted band her. It was unstooling one evening, not meaning
to go very far. I've been wi a pickles, some dam hmslf she
was playing, and trades and all the bark where a much she took from
a customer and placed the trees into me, and and the long cayman or
raised indeed bed luck to mine. Black belt in band her eyes they so
like diamonds you think she was queen of the land. Hannah, hair hungover
her show holders tied up with the black belvit bang. The next morning,
before judging jury a trial, I was said to appear, and the judge
he sent me, young par hello, my case against you is quite clear,
and seven monkeys is your sentence. You're headed for bondyman plans to borrow
away from your friends and relieve. He shuts to follow the black belted band
herries. They showed like the diamonds you think she was Queen of the land
Hannah, hair hungover her show holders, tied up with the black belvit bang.
So listen to folly, young fellows and pleading this morning from me.
Whenever you're out on the liquor, we lads, beware of the pretty colleagues,
or they'll fill you with whiskey and corner till you're no longer able to
stand. And the very next thing is no, lads, you're headed in
her condis plans her rise, they shall lie the diamonds. You think she
was green of her land and her hair hung over her show hoods tie up
below black belt is ban her rise. They show like the diamonds you think
she was green of a land and her hair hung over her show ho dos
hied up with our black belt it ben rise. Do you think she was
Queen of the hair hung over her show hold? That's hid up black black
belvenn blah. Very nice, awesome. The pop farmers, the pop farmers
are here with us. By the way, Hello to our friend Melanie Liberty
from the great State of Vermont, she says, because there's no U.
Because the video is not working. She said, I can't even tell if
there are any sturdy beards. Oh she's missing out. Oh you have no
idea, dear, what you're missing a bigger name for a band? Right?
That was? That was from the Glitter Tooth thing. Yes, yes
there is one. Well's got a pretty sturdy beard. Yeah, I'd say
all three of you have sturdy beards, but damn yours, yours is by
far the bed would definitely queen yours is the best one in the room.
He's very fond of Yes, yes, yes, for those who cannot see,
the beard is just about mid chest. Oh, I bet they're mad
now they kids. Yeah, the pictures later. Now, when you guys
play out, do you do you have guest musicians come up and play with
you? Because I would imagine you've got people in the scene who also know
like a lot of these classic Irish songs. Probably, yeah, a lot
of times we have. It's weird because when I lived in Derry there really
wasn't much of a I didn't see much of a music scene. But when
I moved to Greenfield that it's near Milford, and you wouldn't think that Milford
would have a big scene, but it's the Milford music scene is awesome.
So we have a lot of musical friends in our circle, and whenever we
played, invariably people would jump up with this. Yeah. Yeah, it's
a lot of fun with them. Yeah, a handful of them that we
referred to as honorary popform. Yeah. Yeah, oh, very cool,
very cool. Oh, Melanie says, no one likes to tease guys.
You go to the Pop Farmer page. You'll you'll be able to see it.
That's right, that's right, see it. And Gracie, uh said
Kenzie and I are applauding after every song from Upstate New York. Very good,
very good. Now, when you guys, what's the longest show you
guys have ever played? Because I would imagine some of these shows get pretty
long, especially with all the songs. You know. We were talking to
Jimmy and I were talking about that. The other night. We did part
a private party that we're supposed to be four hours. It started as four
hours and then they kept saying we'll pay you more, so I think it
ended up being six hours. No kidding. We ended up playing all the
songs we knew more than once. But yeah, we ran out of songs
at some point, but yeah, you kept throwing money at us, so
it's like, okay, yeah, yeah, you're paying a plan. Yeah,
exactly exactly. Now, what's the do you have a policy in the
band as far as because obviously with these shows with St. Patrick's Day,
there's a lot of alcohol around. How do you how do you approach that?
Do you do you just say we're not gonna because we don't want to.
We we carpool and I drive down and Dan drives me home. Yeah.
Well, I mean there is a policy. It's don't feed the drummer
beer. Oh okay, he always ends up with which is a horrible,
horrible I mean any day of the year, Like I would say, anyone's
permitted to drink. Everybody's Irish on Yeah, I'm riding with Jim, so
I'm expecting to dra home, right. Although when I first when we first
started playing, we didn't play We didn't play a lot of Irish songs,
and I didn't play mandolin at first, so we were Once we started playing
more, I learned to play the mandolin and our first one of our original
pop farmers was a really good mandolin player, and he was kind enough to
teach me some stuff and kind of let me take over. And I think
it was the first Saint Patrick's dad, I think we did. I was
still learning to play, and I forgot how to play mandolin like halfway through.
Guinness did not help. Yeah, that was a novice and by the
time I got down, I was a beginner. So it was bad.
Oh. By the way, Patrick and the Chaffroom says, hence the name
Jimmy three pints. Yes, all right, well that makes sense. By
the ways, is it still the case in New Hampshire, Because back when
I was promoting a lot of shows, you couldn't have alcohol on stage.
And then I heard that that had changed. Is that true changed a few
years ago. Yeah, it did change. It was pretty strict with it
for a while. But yeah, it's one of the better things they could
have done. Yeah. I mean, it's fully understandable that, like as
a band, you're technically an employee of the bar or wherever you're playing.
Yeah, which makes sense. But I think it's it's one of the best
decisions, at least for fans that they made, because yeah, some of
us, like like myself, no matter what, no matter how the times
I get on stage. I still got the nerves that go oh sure,
sure, yeah yeah, so it helps. Yeah, that down and and
frankly makes a better show. Someone is I don't why do you keep looking
at me drinking? They can't see that so probably because your name is But
you can ask for it so long as you know your limit, right,
right of course. Yeah. We usually tell people the more the more you
as the audience, the more you drink, the better we sound. But
it doesn't work, right, and we all know that. I think I
think we've all stumbled over that as musicians. We've we've all found our limit.
Yeah, okay, right, yeah. A rather tall leprechaun told me
you put on quite the show last Sunday at Great North. Oh right,
yeah, that's right. Yeah, but that was a great room. I
love that they hire us once a year where they want to or not.
Yeah yeah, And the first time the leprechaun showed up, I said that
these guys everybody sees that guy, right and it's not just me, but
yeah, we love Great North. Yeah yeah we do. We do.
To the lepre is my son. I did not know that that's a small
world. And yet you're not Irish. I am Irish. Oh okay,
oh that's right there, we'll talk about it. I'm Irish, but I'm
not much of a I've never been much of a drinker, so not Irish.
Yeah, we'll come to a Fop Farmer show. Yeah. Years ago,
I said, you guys remember the uptown tavern on Elm Street years ago
when I was promoting shows there. It was the managers there were constantly on
me about, you know, bringing in bands, about you know, making
sure they don't drink on stage, because at that time it was a big
deal. And you know, the liquor commission would come in undercover, and
you know, it was such a it was such a pain, and you
know, I'd be reminding these you know, and I had to be the
bad because I was a promoter. So I was constantly reminding these guys,
you can't bring that on stage. You can't bring that on stage. So
it's good that it changed promoter. Yeah, yeah, a musician not to
drink inevitably, especially stating back today someone will buy thee around like sorry,
I can't have it on stage, and then you can change that now.
Yeah, Patrick says the chat. That was a great show at Great North.
Oh yeah, very cool. It was a fun show. Do you
guys we want to play another one? Sure? We have the pop farmers
here with us live in studio this morning. I always joked at it when
you're playing in an Irish bar, and I'm sure I think it's a rule
that you have to play this song. So all right, and we are
nothing if not followers. I don't have any beer. Well, I'm a
w rover for many easy, spent all my money on whiskey and beer,
and now I'm returning with gold in Christ the arm Sure run the home A
play about the good no more. And it's no name, never, no
name, never no more. Well I play Rover, no never, no
more. Women went to mailouse, I used to frequel and I told the
man lady the money was mending. I asked her for credit. She answered,
DNA, such, you're a customer us. I couldn't have anything.
And it's no name end never, no name, never no more. Will
I play on Ruber no never, no more. When I took from my
bucket and sabers right and the landlady's eyes open, white wendy light, she
said, I am in wiser the best and the words in hospital in the
world Lee and Jess and it's no name, never, no name, never
no more. Will I play my Ruber no never, no more? And
we hoped the my up there's a small I'm not and I pray the new
part and they're pro the old son any favor gibe is I'm talking more.
I'm sure the play the Wild Rover no More. And it is no name,
never, no name, never no more. Pay the Wild Rover no
never no more, and no name, never, no name, never no
more. We'll la play Wild Roper in it, No never, no more.
The Pop Farmer is here with us live in studio this morning. So
what's what's next for you guys? After saying Patrick stay weekend, do you
have a lot of shows planned as we go into spring and summer or yeah,
we have uh like a summer summertime semi residency up at a place called
It's mcgirk's. It's a it's an Irish bar hotel up in Hampton Beach that
were on Saturday nights in the summer. I don't know, we're not there
as often as we used to be, but we've been there bear with fourteen
years doing that. So yeah, so it's a it used to be an
Irish bar, but they redid it and now it's kind of like a tiki
bar. So we we sent Irish tiki bar when we're there. Yeah,
but yeah, we have We're gonna we got a couple more gigs in March
and then we have some private gigs and then yeah, so we're it's starting
to pick up. We were the last few months. We haven't had a
lot of gigs, but we're picking picking up. We're gonna rest a little
after next week. Yeah, yeah. Uh. Diane and the chat says
the Pop Farmers are the most inclusive fun band to see live. They invite
the audience have fun with them, go see them. Oh thank you,
don very nice. Melanie is asking what do you farm? Uh? I
assumed it was pop. Yes, we we get that question a lot of
people. I don't often as well. Again it's probably doesn't help my enunciation,
but sometimes people often think we're pot farmers, but I we and we
joked that we were. If we were pot farmers would make a lot more
money, right, dress better, But yeah, it's just uh we we
we farm rock and roll. That's what we do. Is that Who came
up with the name that would be me. We we had a we had
a long list were initially we were we call ourselves Naughty Pine and and A
U G H T y okay, so but then that didn't seem to fit
us too well. And then we had a long list. I had a
whole long list of names. And I love I love hearing about rejected band
names. Yeah, well my whole list was rejected. People who know Jimmy
know why. But yeah, we we were playing when we initially started,
we were playing a lot of power pop, you know, like the Smithereens
and stuff like that. And so I wanted to get popped in the in
the in the name somehow. And there was this band called uh beat Farmers.
I don't know if you yep. Yeah, they swelled B E A
T. Yeah, Oh that's cool beat Farmers. So on the list,
I had pop Farmers, and I thought Jimmy and Alor our first founding filether
al carry. I thought he would hate the name, but they both liked
it's so weird. We were the pop Farmers. After that, Oh very
cool. And I have to always say pop right right, very cool,
very cool? Where should people go online to keep up with everything that that
you guys have coming up. We have a website pop Pop Farmers dot com,
T A G E P O P Farmers dot com and we're all on
Facebook, Instagram. Yeah, that's a nice website. Who does your site?
That would be me? I thank you, but it's I'm a I'm
a website. I love the websites. I need to get better at it.
But no, it's good. It looks good. I like the layout,
and I like that you've got You've got all the shows right on your
homepage in a nice orderly list, which is good. I mean, you
know, even just looking at this stuff, it's even simple things like that.
A lot of people miss, you know, when they're building a website
for their band. So yeah, you can figure that's the thing people want
to know is where you're playing, so right exactly exactly, Yeah, No,
it's a it's a it's a good, good site. Tyler helps a
lot with that. He does. He's our graphic designer. Yeahever we need
a flyer or a poster, he did, if you develop all our logos
we have three different logos. Yeah, and so a lot of it will
be my idea. Say, hey, can you make the pop Farmers look
like a Guinness logo and then he did it, so we one of our
logos looks like a Guinness logo, but then he did our little skull and
Crossbones so yeah, yeah, yeah I like that one. And he does
it all with the Fox on the Flamingos the Oh yeah, yep, yep,
absolutely, yeah we were. We still play that Fox on the Flamingos
track Don't Be a Stranger as I Yeah, I love that. Yeah,
got the only place you can hear right now we haven't released it. Oh
really, yeah, the only one you get. I'm sorry, Jenny,
I don't know your really yeah, sorry, really you're still here conversation No,
I always say though, I'm telling you you got to hit with that
that you gotta hit sock your You're Fox on the Flamingos also came up in
conversation recently because we were trying to figure out if if it would be possible
to do that in this room, but probably not. We've played smaller stages
