The Album "Drink from Lethe"

8:05 Speaker 9: I'm Justin. I play the drums and do vocals.

8:09 Speaker 8: Well very good it's wonderful to have you guys here and so we've got some new music we just played uh smoke rises and that's that's brand new correct.

8:16 Speaker 14: That's it yeah we have a new album coming out uh this fall very excited for it's called drink from nalithi and uh that's one of the first tracks i wrote for it actually you've been that one's been hanging around for.

8:27 Speaker 8: A little while now yeah no it's a great track i love it um so tell us about the album title.

8:34 Speaker 14: Uh drink from nalithi uh Do you know, are you, I know that our listeners aren't necessarily so talk, but anyways, but are you, uh, fairly familiar with Greek mythology at all?

8:44 Speaker 7: Never paid much attention to it.

8:45 Speaker 9: That's great.

8:45 Speaker 7: I mean, I know, like, I know who Zeus is.

8:48 Speaker 5: That guy.

8:49 Speaker 7: I've seen the movie clash of the Titans.

8:51 Speaker 9: You're right.

8:51 Speaker 5: You're ahead of me already.

8:54 Speaker 7: That's about it. That's all I know. That's great.

8:55 Speaker 5: So I'm going to, I'm going to educate you on some Greek mythology.

8:58 Speaker 1: Okay.

8:59 Speaker 14: You've never needed and won't need again, but I heard, I don't know, something I, uh, uh, you know, right through often. I like using some of these, uh, some of the imagery and stories from the Greek mythology, but, uh, this is going to lead into our title track, which we'll play for you. Um, but the, uh, the story of the Lethe, it's, uh, the river of forgetfulness in the underworld. So the thought is that when, uh, when someone dies, uh, they pass the underworld and then those honored, I guess, but, uh, have the option to, You basically can stay in the underworld forever and have that be your.

9:41 Speaker 5: Afterlife. And there's different, like, tiers of, you know, where you could end up and whatever.

9:44 Speaker 7: Okay.

9:45 Speaker 5: Not really relevant to this, I suppose, but we're educating, okay?

9:48 Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.

9:50 Speaker 14: But the thought with Lethe, right, is it's the river of forgetfulness, and you would drink from it, and you'd forget your life, everything that you've ever done, all the experience you've had. and you'd move on and be reborn in some shape or fashion.

10:05 Speaker 5: But, you know, you leave yourself behind and become something new.

10:09 Speaker 6: Okay.

10:09 Speaker 7: Reincarnated, essentially.

10:12 Speaker 5: Essentially that.

10:13 Speaker 14: So it's whether you'd rather stay in the underworld and keep your memories and, you know, your soul and your existence, or if you're going to, you know, pass on to become something new and forget all of that. So that's, uh, the title track is, uh, called Lethe. And there's a second song called Lethe too on this album also. But, um, that's kind of the core concept here. And a lot of these songs I've written about, this is a fairly dark album. A lot of songs were written about death, uh, You know, I like to say...

10:50 Speaker 14: The cheery stuff. Yeah, at shows I like to say that I'm trauma dumping on people, so.

10:54 Speaker 9: Yeah, but it's in a way where it doesn't seem like trauma dumping because it's music.

11:07 Speaker 7: When does it come out, or is it out now?

11:10 Speaker 14: No, it's coming out this fall. I don't have the date for you yet. End of September, early October. I'm going to find a date that looks nice and right for me.

11:17 Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.

11:17 Speaker 5: And we're going to do that.

11:19 Speaker 2: Excellent.

11:19 Speaker 14: We're going to rank our top 10 dates each and we're just going to see which one lines up.

11:23 Speaker 7: Right. Well, very good. Very good. And how many songs on the album?

11:29 Speaker 11: 12 songs.

11:30 Speaker 5: We got 12.

11:31 Speaker 14: Tanner knew there's two songs we had released previously as singles, but it was a while ago and they never ended up on a full length.

11:38 Speaker 5: So we wanted them to be on the CDs and we're going to print vinyls.

11:41 Speaker 11: And a track.

11:43 Speaker 5: And a track, yes.

11:46 Speaker 7: Where did you record?

11:46 Speaker 8: Because everything sounds incredible. I really want to know where you recorded these.

11:51 Speaker 11: A lot of it was my basement.

11:53 Speaker 7: Really?

11:53 Speaker 11: Yeah.

11:55 Speaker 9: That is actually true.

11:56 Speaker 5: And your basement.

11:56 Speaker 6: Yep.

11:57 Speaker 9: So the two Justin basements where a lot of it was recorded. We had the drums tracked at Mojo Studios.

12:06 Speaker 5: Shadow Anthony.

12:07 Speaker 9: So we had all the drums recorded there just because I feel like at least If you have really good sounding drums, the rest from there becomes a lot easier.

12:15 Speaker 7: Right, right. That's true.

12:17 Speaker 9: We went up and did that there, and then the rest of it, we all just recorded ourselves, and Quincy did all the mixing, and then I did the mastering.

12:24 Speaker 7: Okay, okay.

12:25 Speaker 14: Yeah, and our buddy Anthony Asimino up at Mojo Studios, a great friend, and we've done a lot of recording with him in the past, so he does a great job, and it's a good excuse to go up and hang and, you know.

12:36 Speaker 9: That's the real reason to go. It's just a good excuse to go hang out, so.

12:40 Speaker 14: I had run into him at a I went up to that show. He does some of the sound at Lake Maury in Fairleigh, Vermont. They've been doing a concert series there. And I ran into him last year and was like, whoa, I haven't seen you in forever. Didn't know you were going to be here. And he was like, yo, buddy. And, you know, we ended up deciding. I don't know why I'm looking at you. I'm not talking to my mic, but I decided to go to the drums from there.

14:12 Speaker 12: When I built this, it was before I was playing live with the group, but we were pretty sure that was going to happen. And I was like, oh, I really want to put the logo in the front. And I was like, well, how am I going to do this if these guys are like, no, you're crap. Leave. I'm going to be stuck with this keyboard that says they're banned.

14:31 Speaker 11: And I was like, oh, so this is actually.

14:34 Speaker 7: That would be hilarious.

14:36 Speaker 11: It would, actually, yeah.

14:37 Speaker 12: So this is actually a $ 10 just like, Digital photo frame that I have taped in back.

The Meaning Behind "Lethe"

14:55 Speaker 7: We're down here.

14:56 Speaker 5: Yeah, I just want to tell you a little more about the song, I guess.

14:58 Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, yeah, please.

14:59 Speaker 14: Because I'm here to blab, I suppose. So I talked about the Lethe and forgetting and moving on, whatever, and that decision that one would make in the underworld and uh when i got into this and what's uh spurred this specific song which is the title track for the album uh my grandmother had died a couple years ago and uh i love my grandmother and she you know she had a lot of joy in her life and she did a lot for us but uh i felt like she never really did the things that she wanted to do in her life and she was never really uh satisfied and she put a lot of effort i think into making sure that we had some of the things that she didn't, and we had the freedom to make some of the choices that she didn't, but in my process of grieving, I was reading about that Greek mythology, and I was having a thought, if that was a real thing, I don't believe in any afterlife in reality, but if that was a thing, would she even hesitate to say yes?

16:09 Speaker 14: you know, forget everything that had happened in her life. So that's in my process of grieving something that was, you know, going through my head. And that's where this song came from. So this one's called Lethe.

But awful things are happening all over the place. And there's people who are ruining the world. There's awful people in the world, people in control.

29:39 Speaker 14: Oh, it's lovely and this is a show put on through the great american downtown they do a lot of events in nashville i've played a few a few shows for them before they do the farmer's market uh and they asked us to come play and we're uh very excited for it i think this is the uh last show of the summer concert series for the river walk there oh okay it's the new park that they just finished in nashua so it's a lovely place we're excited to be there it's going to be a beautiful night for.

30:03 Speaker 12: It so the pavilion that they made for the bands is absolutely amazing really yeah yeah it's like you know it's this little park which it's pretty but you know it is like a narrow park and it's like oh it's a cute part and then you see this little like pavilion clamshell thing specifically for bands it's like oh wow this is great right on the river too.

Um, and then we kind of thought about it and we're like, well, why isn't he just a member of the band playing on the record? So yeah, we brought him in. Um, we lost our drummer and I was originally, we'll find him.

41:28 Speaker 12: And I mean, most of us have played with each other before in different lineups, different groups also. So right off the bat, we're all pretty comfortable.

41:58 Speaker 9: A long time ago, I remember he was playing in a project and he wasn't thrilled with it, but he was having a good time. And I was trying to start something up and I was like, you should quit your band. Come do this band. Come on, come play in a band.

42:14 Speaker 9: I try to poach him for every project because Dan's very easy to get along with and he's a great player.

But at the time, I had I had initially written it as being lyrics about the Man Ray, which at the time had been closed in Boston for ages. It was something people talked about. But then it reopened. I'm like, I'm not doing that. So I came up with Sunset Electric, which was an imaginary club.
