Speaker 3: What time girl?
Speaker 6: I love it. That is the world radio premiere, the
Speaker 6: brand new single from Down Boys. It is called to
Speaker 6: whom it may concern, and we're going to talk to
Speaker 6: these guys in just a second. Welcome everybody. We have
Speaker 6: entered our number two newmarrow dose of Matt Connorton. Unleashed,
Speaker 6: and we are live from the studios of w m
Speaker 6: n H ninety five point three FM and Glorious Manchester,
Speaker 6: New Hampshire. Today is, of course, Saturday, December thirteen, twenty
Speaker 6: twenty five. Jenny is here at the news table and
Speaker 6: a little warmer in here. Now I've actually unzipped my coat. No,
Speaker 6: it's not, it's fun. It's fine, it's starting, it's starting
Speaker 6: to warm up. It's it's almost sixty degrees. Let's get
Speaker 6: these mics on for these guys here. Welcome, gentlemen, Hey,
Speaker 6: good morning, morning morning. Let's start in the corner there.
Speaker 6: If each of you, Larry will start with you, if
Speaker 6: you can tell us who you are, what you do
Speaker 6: in the band pretty much.
Speaker 7: I'm the man, Larry Williams.
Speaker 8: I played drums, all right, very good, Welcome Larry. I'm
Speaker 8: the understudy to the man Jason Sullivan. Okay, yeah, sing
Speaker 8: and play guitar okay, okay, And you.
Speaker 9: Sir, I am John Clifford, bass player.
Speaker 6: All right, welcome John.
Speaker 10: And my name is Bruce and I play guitar and
Speaker 10: I sing backups.
Speaker 6: Bruce, I gotta get your hey, your mic up over here.
Speaker 6: I'm sorry, no, no, worries that Mike's plugged into a
Speaker 6: different board. Okay, say all that again, no worries.
Speaker 10: My name is Bruce and I play guitar and I
Speaker 10: sing backups.
Speaker 6: All right, very good. Well, it's wonderful to have you
Speaker 6: guys here.
Speaker 10: Thanks for having us.
Speaker 6: Two of you have been on the show before, right, yes,
Speaker 6: with day to attend and then, but you guys have
Speaker 6: never been on before, right, Okay, just making sure because
Speaker 6: sometimes I forget, like someone will. I've had this happen
Speaker 6: where someone will be like, well, you know I was
Speaker 6: on the show like ten years ago, and I'm like,
Speaker 6: oh wow, it's hard to keep track. But no, I
Speaker 6: love the new song, thank you. That just now that's
Speaker 6: on all the streaming platforms and everything now.
Speaker 9: I assume yeah, it comes out today.
Speaker 6: Excellent, excellent, Well congratulations on that. Now, you guys are
Speaker 6: just you're just releasing singles at this point, right, there's
Speaker 6: not an album.
Speaker 7: Or an EP yet, just over a year old.
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, it is a it is kind.
Speaker 11: Of a new project, right, most people are doing it
Speaker 11: at this point. So yeah, that's where we're at.
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, what do you like do you think you're
Speaker 6: going to do?
Speaker 7: Do an EP?
Speaker 6: Or an album eventually.
Speaker 7: Yeah.
Speaker 12: Yeah, we're working on plans now for a full album
Speaker 12: and probably by I staid by the end of twenty
Speaker 12: twenty six, oh something.
Speaker 6: Oh okay, excellent, excellent. Nowhere where do you guys record?
Speaker 6: Because everything sounds really good, but there's so many different
Speaker 6: ways to do it.
Speaker 7: Now.
Speaker 6: You can go to a studio, you can do it
Speaker 6: at home. You can what's the approach that you guys
Speaker 6: take for recording different at home?
Speaker 7: Right?
Speaker 10: Yeah, everything's been done at home, like we we took
Speaker 10: a couple of different approaches. We tried some electronic kits
Speaker 10: on the first couple of singles, and on this batch
Speaker 10: with Toma May Concern and the next single that's coming
Speaker 10: out after it. We use the live drums. But everything's
Speaker 10: just basically, I bring my laptop to a space, we
Speaker 10: set up mics or whatever and just do it to it.
Speaker 10: It's all home home brewed.
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, no, it's great. That's great. You did it
Speaker 6: with that way with all three You've got three total now, right,
Speaker 6: three songs that you totally you've you've recorded, Yeah, yep.
Speaker 6: And how did so how did this come about? How
Speaker 6: did down Boys? I mean, obviously you know two of
Speaker 6: you guys play together in another band. But how did
Speaker 6: how did this start?
Speaker 7: I think I put this thing together.
Speaker 11: Band with those two guys, with Bruce and John. Yeah,
Speaker 11: eventually he was going to be the singer and and
Speaker 11: the band just dissolved right after that. Yeah, really work out.
Speaker 7: I joined a lot of bands.
Speaker 11: When I joined a lot of bands, is I never
Speaker 11: really liked the band, but I always find somebody or
Speaker 11: two right. It's just like, oh man, I got to
Speaker 11: get these two guys numbers right right, And it was
Speaker 11: pretty much all three of these guys. And when the
Speaker 11: band dissolved, I says, we get all do our own thing. Yeah,
Speaker 11: do originals. That was more of a cover of thing. Yeah, yeah,
Speaker 11: with it was kind of fifty to fifty. I think
Speaker 11: when I joined it it was mostly covers though.
Speaker 7: Yeah.
Speaker 11: Yeah, So I just found these guys. I thought, you know,
Speaker 11: very cute, but I mean they know they know how
Speaker 11: to play all right.
Speaker 1: But the check claar right right, I head shot with.
Speaker 7: There was no competition. It was nice.
Speaker 6: Yeah, oh excellent. Did you guys play out a lot?
Speaker 6: Are you playing a lot of shows? It looks like
Speaker 6: you're right, Yeah, we've had a lot of shows.
Speaker 10: In this past year, and we've got a lot coming
Speaker 10: up for twenty twenty six. So yeah, we found ourselves
Speaker 10: surprisingly busy.
Speaker 6: Yeah, no, that's great, that's great. Is it hard to
Speaker 6: juggle this with you know? Are you guys? Also? Do
Speaker 6: you have other projects also outside of this or.
Speaker 9: I have a total of three myself do Yeah?
Speaker 6: What else you have?
Speaker 7: So?
Speaker 12: I actually can't say anything yet, so unfortunately, Oh, there's
Speaker 12: things in the works.
Speaker 9: Asked to keep it down low until it's time to
Speaker 9: announce it.
Speaker 6: Okay, that's cool.
Speaker 9: This is my main priority, but I'm involved in two
Speaker 9: other projects.
Speaker 6: Oh, excellent, excellent. What about you, Jason?
Speaker 8: Yeah, I have an acoustic duo, soul Shine, and we
Speaker 8: play out once a month. Nice kind of not anywhere
Speaker 8: where it would overlap with you know what we're doing
Speaker 8: now heatistically or anything like that. But yeah, stay active,
Speaker 8: been in and out of bands and in the scene
Speaker 8: for you know, the better part of a couple of decades.
Speaker 8: So yeah, I was happy to get the call and
Speaker 8: yeah and sit here and I think the work speaks
Speaker 8: for itself, and yeah, I think we're doing great. Absolutely
Speaker 8: wanted to add to the tour thing that was going on.
Speaker 8: You said, we're playing out. We're hitting like almost every
Speaker 8: state in New England in the next like four months.
Speaker 4: Good.
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's pretty cool, excellent. Do you guys have a
Speaker 6: favorite place that you've played? Is there is there something
Speaker 6: that stands out or anywhere in Manchester brilliant?
Speaker 11: I don't play place called Charlie. Still it's a great venue,
Speaker 11: especially for new new bands, and yeah, yeah, really good
Speaker 11: to us, And uh yeah, I think I do like
Speaker 11: it that.
Speaker 10: I love Charlie too. Yeah, it's great sound, you know,
Speaker 10: it's like you said, great people, So it's that's probably
Speaker 10: been my favorite venue. We've played there a lot, so
Speaker 10: uh yeah.
Speaker 7: They gave us a chance, and uh, I don't know,
Speaker 7: it just took off from there.
Speaker 11: They really liked us, and then we started getting other
Speaker 11: gigs and then they started calling us.
Speaker 7: Yeah, call them first. Yeah, and they've been calling us
Speaker 7: ever since.
Speaker 6: He's going to be coming on Mike Hill. He's gonna
Speaker 6: be He's gonna be on the show. So great, very soon,
Speaker 6: I think, yeah, yeah, yeah, because that's a venue that
Speaker 6: comes up a lot on the show. Everybody loves Charlie Soul.
Speaker 6: Jenny and I haven't been there yet, but that's worth
Speaker 6: the trip everything. Everything we hear about it amazing.
Speaker 1: Mike, Yeah, this sounds like a mad problem. Oops, it's amazing.
Speaker 9: I really do want to get on the suck it out.
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, absolutely absolutely. All right, So where does the
Speaker 6: name come from? If it's is it is the origin
Speaker 6: story of the name radio friendly or yeah? Okay, well
Speaker 6: it depends when you ask.
Speaker 11: I mean, honestly, I don't even know. Any think we
Speaker 11: do the down Boys song, So I don't know. It
Speaker 11: just sounded cool, Yeah, sound cool. I think Jason is
Speaker 11: the one who ended up with that. We all had
Speaker 11: a bunch of names here there.
Speaker 7: We kind of all agreed on him. He's the biggest
Speaker 7: guy in the band.
Speaker 6: Right right, he gets his way.
Speaker 7: Yeah, we all kind of didn't hate it. We got
Speaker 7: the down Boys. Yeah.
Speaker 8: I don't know if we want to reveal the origin
Speaker 8: story yet. Yeah, no, no, no, there's a bunch of
Speaker 8: theories out there. I kind of want to let it,
Speaker 8: let everybody, let everybody figure out. Yeah, all right, Larry's
Speaker 8: got two shepherds and we practice it at his place,
Speaker 8: so you know, he always says down Boys to his dogs.
Speaker 6: Okay, that could be it could be one could be
Speaker 6: one Okay, Okay.
Speaker 8: It could just be that it sounds like, you know,
Speaker 8: we're down for anything or yeah, you know in the
Speaker 8: eighties and the Warrant song and then cool cool guys, right, yeah, sure,
Speaker 8: got down sort of.
Speaker 6: You see you see that video and it's like, I
Speaker 6: don't know how cool they are, but you know what
Speaker 6: I mean the choreography and difference. Yeah, oh I thought
Speaker 6: that I actually like Warrant. I'm not even knocking the band,
Speaker 6: but I remember the first time I saw the video
Speaker 6: for Down Boys and they're they're all on their knees
Speaker 6: moving in Unison, and I was like, this is a
Speaker 6: little uh yeah, no choreography insurance isn't good enough. Yeah,
Speaker 6: and it's just to be clear, it's down Boys. It's
Speaker 6: not the down Boys. Down Boys, just down Boys. Very good,
Speaker 6: very good. And then so like this this song just
Speaker 6: came out, you're already working on the next one, because
Speaker 6: you guys probably have you know, you're all creative guys,
Speaker 6: you probably have a lot of ideas.
Speaker 11: We've got a bunch of already done, so we're working
Speaker 11: on recording them, not so much of working on the song.
Speaker 11: So yeah, yeah, little tweaks here and there for the
Speaker 11: recordings Yeah, comedies and stuff like that, which have really
Speaker 11: really took off.
Speaker 7: I think the comedies in the standard great.
Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah, we've actually already got our next single, Spirits Disappear,
Speaker 12: slated to come out in January.
Speaker 9: Oh wonder this one gets some time to breathe and
Speaker 9: get out there outstanding.
Speaker 12: Try to be a little bit ahead of the game
Speaker 12: and try to do maybe every thirty forty five days
Speaker 12: we'll put something new out.
Speaker 7: Yeah.
Speaker 6: It's hard to know, right, I mean, it's hard to
Speaker 6: know how how soon is too soon or you know,
Speaker 6: or too long or it's exactly.
Speaker 7: Yeah, you we're at a good pace. We got seven
Speaker 7: seven now, I think we got seven originals.
Speaker 11: Yeah, basically we wrote seven originals and then we instead
Speaker 11: of gotting to ten or twelve, let's let's go back
Speaker 11: and start recording when piece work.
Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we got seven that will come out.
Speaker 6: Okay, okay, not standing.
Speaker 7: You know, we ask people which onesda they want to
Speaker 7: hear first? You know what I mean?
Speaker 11: Yeah, which one do you think? And these were some
Speaker 11: of these were voted, right, I mean yeah, yeah, this.
Speaker 10: To whom we concern. It seems like when we played
Speaker 10: this this song live, for some reason, a lot of
Speaker 10: people resonate with to whom and make concern.
Speaker 7: Almost everybody actually, Yeah.
Speaker 10: It's funny though, like depending on who comes up to you, like,
Speaker 10: someone will have a different song that they like of
Speaker 10: our so it's like, oh I rel like this one,
Speaker 10: and then another persons like, oh I really like this one.
Speaker 10: But honestly, kind of the consensus has been to whom
Speaker 10: I make concern has been a pretty a.
Speaker 11: Lot of melodies and there's still a lot of rock
Speaker 11: and roll guitar. You know, the drums are strong but
Speaker 11: not crazy. You know, it's not Metallica by any means,
Speaker 11: but isn't boring.
Speaker 7: I don't know, I love it.
Speaker 6: Yeah, this is great, great track.
Speaker 11: Everybody's writing melodies anymore. Everybody's just like I know the
Speaker 11: places we've everybody's screaming, Rellian just screaming. Everything's drum solos,
Speaker 11: everything solo, solo solo.
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's really hard to understand the music, although you
Speaker 7: know the talent is that wow, those probably are those
Speaker 7: and changes.
Speaker 11: Were insane and that's great sometimes, but sometimes you have
Speaker 11: the audience and you just want to understand the song
Speaker 11: to be able to dance to it and sing to
Speaker 11: it and right right I love rock and roll by Jones.
Speaker 11: Jet wasn't the hottest song in the world, but I mean,
Speaker 11: once you hear it, you're singing it.
Speaker 1: That's true.
Speaker 6: That's absolutely true. Yeah, yeah, I agree. I agree.
Speaker 8: The creativity in this band is off the charts. Like Uncharted,
Speaker 8: our very last practice, we wrote two more really that
Speaker 8: were there were pretty much skeletons that are gonna that
Speaker 8: are gonna be built off of and things like that.
Speaker 8: It's just like an unending conveyor belt of things that
Speaker 8: were jamming out writing recording.
Speaker 7: Yeah.
Speaker 8: So I wouldn't expect us to stop anytime.
Speaker 6: So yeah, yeah, excellent, excellent, Well we should play another one?
Speaker 4: What uh?
Speaker 6: What should we uh? Which one should we play next?
Speaker 6: And then we'll we'll one of them will leave for
Speaker 6: the end of the show, I mean the end of
Speaker 6: the segment obviously, But which one should we play with now?
Speaker 7: At this point?
Speaker 9: How about My Kind of Animal?
Speaker 7: Yeah?
Speaker 6: Oh yeah, and this one we did a world premiere
Speaker 6: for it.
Speaker 3: When this.
Speaker 6: Absolutely all right, let's give this a spand if you're
Speaker 6: just joining us down, boys, U here with us in
Speaker 6: studio and this track is called My Kind of Animal.
Speaker 5: Pads not.
Speaker 1: One means young maidies, mister be so boy see the race.
Speaker 1: Belive you by my sun night Joe, go off, you
Speaker 1: can have a real good time. Wall You're crazy. I'm
Speaker 1: not here.
Speaker 5: You might coming.
Speaker 13: You're crazy, I'm not You're not going black dathing song.
Speaker 13: You even brought your friend Younts.
Speaker 1: What I've been stop all o the time?
Speaker 5: Friend, I got strap shout my shot the soundful human times.
Speaker 1: You can't tell me aoun. We haven't beat you in time.
Speaker 1: You're crazy. I'm not me here. You're not leble you
Speaker 1: crazy heav. I'm not here you ma Whoba, You're crazy.
Speaker 1: I'm not he here. Dom come that.
Speaker 5: Crazy heavy among Hea You not coming?
Speaker 1: You crazy? Am not do not coming? You crazy about baby?
Speaker 1: You're not coming.
Speaker 7: There?
Speaker 6: It is That is my kind of animal. The band
Speaker 6: is Down Boys, and we've got the guys from Down
Speaker 6: Boys here in the studio with us. And uh, that's
Speaker 6: a great track. We you know you heard it here
Speaker 6: first we played that when that first came out, and
Speaker 6: love it and now what what's what's that one?
Speaker 7: Is that?
Speaker 6: Like, uh, is one of you a veterinarian or what
Speaker 6: what's that song?
Speaker 12: So that one was actually born out of a jam
Speaker 12: session up at Jason's place, either Bruce and I started
Speaker 12: playing the riff. You know, we just kind of locked
Speaker 12: onto it and said, all right, yeah, you know I
Speaker 12: I kind of feel like it has kind of early
Speaker 12: Aerosmith kind of. But one of these guys came up
Speaker 12: with the idea, why don't we just take a few
Speaker 12: examples of some personal adult history.
Speaker 6: Got yeah, yeah, yeah, well well done, well done.
Speaker 9: But that one came about pretty easily out of the gym.
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, is that? Is that how most of these happened?
Speaker 6: Because that's what these songs feel like.
Speaker 7: They feel like some of them are that way, some
Speaker 7: of them.
Speaker 11: These guys have these all three of these guys. Because
Speaker 11: I'm the drummer, I don't have much, but I have
Speaker 11: a lot to say. Guys either bring stuff to the table,
Speaker 11: or just before a break, he starts doing something.
Speaker 7: I just can't help but put a beat to it.
Speaker 6: Yeah, he has his.
Speaker 7: Bass down, he's picking it back up, and then we
Speaker 7: don't take a break. We end up just like jam
Speaker 7: it to something.
Speaker 11: He comes up some kind of words, We record it,
Speaker 11: and then next time we come in and go because
Speaker 11: if he records it, like well, I'll remember what we
Speaker 11: did because if you don't, you don't even remember something
Speaker 11: when you're jamming, you know, you having fun.
Speaker 7: He puts words to it before you know what their songs.
Speaker 11: Yeah, not all of them, but I think a few
Speaker 11: of this way, even like our genres, I think they're
Speaker 11: all different, some of them. You know, you might be
Speaker 11: like I kind to hear a little of this band
Speaker 11: and that, sure, but not in all of every one
Speaker 11: of them. We might hear something different, you know what
Speaker 11: I mean. Yeah, I do not have to sound like
Speaker 11: somebody today, you know what I mean.
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's been a long time. Yeah.
Speaker 6: Do you guys have any like, is there anybody else
Speaker 6: in the scene you kind of you know what happens organically,
Speaker 6: you've kind of sort of teamed up with like for
Speaker 6: shows like that you Is there anybody who play a
Speaker 6: lot of shows.
Speaker 7: With the Mystic Angel? Yeah? Yeah, yeah they do because
Speaker 7: it's convenient.
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah, cut up the drums once exactly. Yeah
Speaker 6: that makes sense.
Speaker 9: Yeah, thumbs down The.
Speaker 7: Angel dumbs down. Nathan Hills getting a little.
Speaker 6: Yeah, Nathan Hill's great. Yeah he's been on the show.
Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, great guy, absolutely, Yeah, I mean we've played
Speaker 11: with everyone, Lone Wolf, James, I know, it's been down
Speaker 11: Anthony from Perching Sin nice.
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, excellent, very vibrant scene. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, no,
Speaker 6: it is incredible. You know, sometimes people will ask, like,
Speaker 6: you know, Jenny does a book, and people will ask,
Speaker 6: you know, where do you find all this talent to
Speaker 6: come on the show. It's like, well, it's everywhere.
Speaker 11: Collectively, we all played everywhere. Yeah, he was covering for
Speaker 11: Exception for a while, great great metal band. And this
Speaker 11: guy's doing all our recording now yeah. Yeah, this guy's
Speaker 11: writing lyrics. Well, those are all really hot at work,
Speaker 11: and I just gap for them to put it together.
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, I'll tell you where to show up. You guys,
Speaker 6: do any if you made any music videos or anything
Speaker 6: for any of these songs?
Speaker 9: Not yet, we have that in the works year too.
Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, because you guys are all you're you're very photogenics.
Speaker 7: That's true. Yeah, I do have a face for reading.
Speaker 7: I look like Alice Cooper a little. So yeah you
Speaker 7: think that's cute.
Speaker 6: But I say the pictures of you, you know, because
Speaker 6: most bands, you know, they just you know, kind of
Speaker 6: stand there, just look at the camera, you know, But
Speaker 6: you guys are you're very animated in your pictures.
Speaker 7: So you know, but it's an animated picture.
Speaker 6: Well there you go. Somebody, somebody drew it and it looks.
Speaker 7: Like one of them. I'm just kiping type.
Speaker 6: No, but I can just I can imagine. I can
Speaker 6: imagine you guys do it. But but there is something
Speaker 6: you might do as far as the video. Yeah, in
Speaker 6: the words, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 10: I can't see why not. I mean, I think that
Speaker 10: any video presence is kind of important for any band nowadays,
Speaker 10: Like a lot of people use Instagram or Snapchat or
Speaker 10: whatever and just getting stuff out there, even if it's
Speaker 10: not like a full fledged video. But I do think
Speaker 10: it would be cool to do a full video. I
Speaker 10: don't know what song we would do it for, but hell,
Speaker 10: it's doing for all of them.
Speaker 7: I don't really care.
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it really is important. It's funny because
Speaker 6: like a lot of people who don't know, who don't
Speaker 6: pay attention, think that music videos are dead, like because
Speaker 6: they people have a perception that you know, once MTV,
Speaker 6: you know, stop playing videos effectively more than more than
Speaker 6: twenty years ago now, and VH one probably did as well,
Speaker 6: that you know that that the art form of the
Speaker 6: music video is dead. And what what people don't realize
Speaker 6: is it's actually I think more important than ever because
Speaker 6: of YouTube, you know, and what major artists who have, like,
Speaker 6: you know, a gazillion dollars will actually put out. I
Speaker 6: think I think Metallica did it, Beyonce has done it
Speaker 6: where they'll were released an album and literally for every
Speaker 6: single song on the album there's a video, a fully produced,
Speaker 6: high budget video, and it's you know, it just goes
Speaker 6: on social media and of course, but it helps fuel
Speaker 6: the you know, the algorithms and and and sell and
Speaker 6: sell the music and and it's really more more important
Speaker 6: than ever, I think. You know, I think you're right.
Speaker 9: I think it's just a different medium now.
Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly, it's it's changed. But but but a lot
Speaker 6: of these videos too, you know, the like the big
Speaker 6: budget ones. They look like something you might have seen
Speaker 6: in the you know, in the the heyday of MTV,
Speaker 6: you know. So yeah, people people like and it's easy,
Speaker 6: like you can even make you can do something very
Speaker 6: I've seen some really creative things that are actually very
Speaker 6: low budget but end up being really impactful, you know,
Speaker 6: as far as music videos. So yeah, there's really there's
Speaker 6: really no limit to what you can do with the
Speaker 6: technology now. So it's incredible.
Speaker 7: It's not everything, right, that's right.
Speaker 11: And I could buy I could buy you the best
Speaker 11: guitar in the world, right, and this guy could play
Speaker 11: the cheapest one, probably better.
Speaker 6: Right, exactly, exactly. Now, what So what's kind of the
Speaker 6: future trajectory for you guys? Do you think, like, do
Speaker 6: you have do you have kind of a long term
Speaker 6: plan or get rich?
Speaker 7: You know?
Speaker 6: Yeah, at our day.
Speaker 9: Jobs, you know, I don't know if there's really a plan.
Speaker 9: We started this really just to have some fun.
Speaker 7: Yeah.
Speaker 12: Yeah, we were doing our thing, having a good time.
Speaker 12: We'll go up to Charlie's every couple of weeks and yeah,
Speaker 12: out of nowhere, it's just when are you guys playing again?
