Speaker 5: And let's do this. Right now, we're going to introduce our guests. So we have Jason Pelletier and Tommy Jakes from the band God's Go First. Welcome, guys.
Speaker 4: Thank you.
Speaker 1: Hello.
Speaker 4: Thanks for having us.
Speaker 5: Hello, absolutely. I'm excited. I love the album, Six Pack. By the way, I love the name, too. You guys probably hear this all the time. God's Go First is just a badass name.
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was sort of almost a random name that our drummer had come up with, and we like that it just has kind of multiple meanings to it, depending on... Depending on what it means to you, it can be interpreted in multiple ways.
Speaker 5: Right, right. That is true. So what do you do in the band, Jason?
Speaker 4: I play guitar, and I do our engineering and artwork.
Speaker 5: Okay, excellent. And Tommy, you're the singer, correct?
Speaker 4: Vocals, yeah.
Speaker 5: All the vocals, yeah. And how long has the band existed? How long have you guys been around?
Speaker 4: We started around March of 2019. I was playing in a band called Kraken's Beard. You know, that's when the pandemic was kicking off. So I, you know, went home, brought all my stuff home from where I was playing. And, you know, I said, I guess I'm just doing this on my own at home now. And, you know, called a friend of mine, Ben, who's our bass player. He came over a few months later. I called Scott. I said, listen, we're not really all that scared right now.
Speaker 1: It's.
Speaker 4: If we get sick, we get sick. And then kind of kicked off from there. We went through multiple iterations. We've had multiple different people. But just recently for this album, Tommy came in.
Speaker 6: Okay.
Speaker 5: Oh, so this is your first album with the band?
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6: I've been in the band for about a year.
Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
Speaker 6: We released Six Pack in July.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay.
Speaker 4: Okay.
Speaker 5: Very good. And where did you record this? Because it sounds incredible, especially, by the way, and I love the way the guitars sound. People who know me and people who follow me on social media know that I occasionally will complain about, and I never want to be the old man yelling at clouds. I always want to avoid that. And I generally do avoid that. But I often complain about how guitars sound in modern metal. I don't like the scooping of the mids, shall we say. I don't like when producers make guitars sound like a kazoo.
Speaker 5: And I feel like that's really taken hold, especially in the last couple of decades, frankly. So I love when I hear something like this, like what you guys are doing, where it's like, yes, that's what guitars should sound like to my ears.
Speaker 4: Well, thank you. I'll take that as a huge compliment. Absolutely. It's recorded in my little studio above my garage, you know, in Milton, New Hampshire.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 4: You know, I'm not a professional engineer by any means, but I've been doing it for a long time, hacking and slashing at it and trying to figure things out, watching videos, reading, things like that. So this is where I am now.
Speaker 5: Wow, what you're doing is working.
Speaker 1: Thank you.
Speaker 4: Thank you.
Speaker 5: You record other artists there too, or.
Speaker 4: Not yet, but I have been talking about it.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 5: No, that makes sense. Cause you, you got a, you got a great sound there. Um, does the previous, cause the band's been around for, for a bit, obviously with different members.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 5: Has the sound changed over the years?
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, for sure. Um, you know, uh, last singer was a real heavy kind of false chords, metal singer, you know? So, uh, we certainly were, A little more thrashy, I would say, early on. And we've kind of gone more rock and roll. And that's why our logo kind of says North American hard rock.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Rather than heavy metal, even though we know we have a lot of metal tendencies, right? We all love metal. We are more in that kind of just hard rock angle.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 6: I come from the much more melodic metal thing.
Speaker 5: OK.
Speaker 4: OK.
Speaker 5: No, it makes sense.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 5: It's melodic, but it's heavy, you know, which which not everyone can pull off, which I really like that, too.
Speaker 6: What about.
Speaker 5: So who writes the lyrics? Tommy, do you write the lyrics?
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 7: The new batch of six-pack songs, these guys had a bunch of ideas with no vocals and stuff. And I had been doing melodies from Ghost Road since 2010. And then everybody in that band, it kind of... Everybody got busy doing their own things. Bass players at Sound Engineer. Drummers in Nate Hill Trio now. But I had nothing going on, really. And then these guys... put out a feeler for a singer and then basically went down.
Speaker 6: I emailed him. I said, do you got stuff with no vocals?
Speaker 7: Let's see it. They sent me some stuff. I wrote a bunch of songs, you know? And I mean, again, the six pack, it's pretty heavy.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 5: Um, Oh, before we go any further too, I'm going to put the camera on me for a moment cause you guys brought goodies. So appreciate that. So for anyone who's listening to the audio version of the show, please, when you get a chance, check out the video. So we got, you brought, let's see, hold that up so the camera can see it. Oh, that's cool too. The logo is so cool too. And I love, and I love the image on the back there. So you brought one for me and one for Jenny. So I appreciate that.
Speaker 4: Absolutely.
Speaker 5: And also I intentionally waited to open this because he also brought a package here. Let's see. Oh, and I also got the package you sent me in the mail too.
Speaker 4: Perfect.
Speaker 5: With the CD and the stickers and everything and.
Speaker 4: Well, there's more of that. Oh, my God.
Speaker 7: Yeah, anyone who's into physical media, go to thegodsgofirst.com.
Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. Check it out. And you can listen to the album for free on YouTube.
Speaker 4: Oh, that's cool.
Speaker 5: Yeah, you guys got buttons and stickers. Oh, my God.
Speaker 6: Wow.
Speaker 5: Thank you, guys.
Speaker 4: Absolutely.
Speaker 5: Yeah, Jenny loves stickers. Her computer's covered with them.
Speaker 4: We are also sticker lovers.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5: I'll just kind of hold those up for the camera to see. Oh, and a couple more physical copies of the CD. Oh, and you got, what's the correct term for these?
Speaker 4: Koozie.
Speaker 5: Koozie, yeah. Oh, that's cool. Let's go first, The Lost Year. Now, what is The Lost Year? Is that a previous album?
Speaker 4: Well, that was our first album.
Speaker 5: Okay, gotcha.
Speaker 4: Because we were doing it during the pandemic.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 4: And, you know, that. that was kind of a lost year for a lot of people.
Speaker 5: Exactly.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 5: It's amazing. Thank you guys. It's amazing how much that's, that still comes up on the show too, because it, it affected the, so, so many people, but you know, the thing too, I always say about it is that, um, you know, we got to find silver linings where we can. And it was pretty tough to find silver linings with a pandemic. Um, other than hopefully, you know, they tend to happen once every a hundred years. So hopefully we don't have to go through that again in any of our, our lifetimes.
Speaker 3: Right.
Speaker 5: But the other thing I always say too, when, in terms of musicians, you know, and creativity, it kind of forced a lot of people to find ways to be creative and, And we were.
Speaker 6: All stuck at home writing songs. Exactly.
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. So you can give up and just sit around or you can make the most of the time and And do something creative with it.
Speaker 1: Absolutely.
Speaker 5: And I think it really kind of forced people to be creative, especially in some instances in ways that maybe they hadn't previously considered, you know.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 5: In terms of how they work. You know, all the technology already existed. I mean, you could already share files and, you know, write songs together remotely or whatever, however you were doing it. But I think it really kind of forced people to be more open to using technology.
Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 5: You know, so that they didn't have to grind everything to a halt.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, you saw a lot of, uh, you know, pro bands out there that were putting out videos, uh, you know, the four or five way, uh, you know, capture, uh, sometimes in, uh, multiple countries, you know, uh, and, and actually doing things. Uh, so that was, That was interesting. And yeah, I think you're right. You know, it forced you to. You didn't have a choice.
Speaker 3: Exactly.
Speaker 4: Do you want to keep playing? Yes, I do. So that's what we're doing. Exactly. Exactly.
Speaker 5: Well, I think if you're just joining us, God's Go First is with us. I think we should play another song from the album, but I'll let you guys pick. What should we play?
Speaker 4: What do you want, Tommy?
Speaker 6: Start a Celebration.
Speaker 3: All right.
Speaker 1: Yep.
Speaker 5: Oh, that's a good one. Do you call this an album or an EP? Six tracks.
Speaker 4: An EP. You call it an EP, okay.
Speaker 7: Yeah, we're actually recording a couple more tracks right now that are going to be non-album tracks. And then, yeah, you know, I hate to say the full length is dead, but, you know, an EP seems more, you know.
Speaker 5: Yeah, there's so many different ways to release music now.
Speaker 4: You know, for 10 to 12 tracks, right, you're talking about a lot of time, especially for a band that doesn't do this for a living.
Speaker 1: Right.
Speaker 4: It can just take so long that, you know... When two years goes by, people go, are you guys even still doing anything? I know, yeah.
Speaker 7: Well, I feel like the way people listen is different. Again, you give them six songs, maybe they can really digest it. You get 13 tunes on an album. It's like skipping some of them.
Speaker 5: That's true. That's true. Well, let's give this a spin. This is Sorrow to Celebration. The band is Gods Go First. The album is called Six Pack. Check this out.
Speaker 2: And you.
Speaker 1: Have to feel the same And I know sometimes.
Speaker 3: It's hard It's the wisdom.
Speaker 1: So now you understand it's over Today's the day you realize You lost before the.
Speaker 2: Fight was over.
Speaker 8: The clock, it shows you borrow time And you have to feel the.
Speaker 5: Same And I think sometimes.
Speaker 1: It's the wisdom of the same. And I guess they're wrong. They're wrong. You know it's over I read it in the sky The hate is boiled.
Speaker 3: Over This time.
Speaker 1: Spoiled over this time.
Speaker 3: Rock you up.
Speaker 1: But I think this time they're wrong I think this time they're wrong I think this time they're wrong I think.
Speaker 3: This time.
Speaker 5: That's how it's done. Sorry to Celebration. The band is God's Go First. We've got Jason Pelletier and Tommy Jakes from God's Go First here with us in studio. And by the way, so we were talking off air, and I was saying, you know, I'm sitting here thinking, Tommy seems familiar. And then you've been on the show before.
Speaker 6: Yeah, I did a segment with my buddy Joey Painter.
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6: We played some acoustic hip-hop stuff live.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 6: It was really cool.
Speaker 5: That's why I was asking you, too, about, so what was the band you were in before God's Go First? Because I was trying to figure out where I knew you from.
Speaker 6: Before this, it was the melodies from Ghost Road.
Speaker 5: But it turned out I knew you from being on my show. Yeah, that happens sometimes, but... Um, I've been doing this a long time, so I, you know, it's, it all gets to be a blur in my mind, but I'm glad you said something.
Speaker 6: It happens. It happens with us too.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 8: Yeah.
Speaker 6: Nice to meet you. They're like, uh, we, I've met you before.
Speaker 1: We played.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah. Totally.
Speaker 1: Totally.
Speaker 5: But, um, oh, so we should mention too, where people can get this, get the, the merch. Um, this gentleman over here was reminding us.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Gods go first, a.com. Uh, we have a store on there. Um, you know, we, we try to keep it up to date with whatever merch we have available and yeah, you can get it there or you know, you can just reach out to us via email too, if you're local and you know, want to meet up somewhere. I don't do our social media. We leave that to Scott, our drummer, but we, we try to make sure we you know, we're ahead of things as far as advertising shows and stuff like that.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 5: There's so much to, you know, with social media, there's so much to do so much to that. Are you, are you guys from here or where, where, where are you guys from?
Speaker 4: I'm out of Milton, New Hampshire.
Speaker 5: Milton.
Speaker 4: Okay.
Speaker 5: And then where are you from Tommy?
Speaker 6: I live in Elliott, Maine.
Speaker 5: Elliott, Maine.
Speaker 3: Okay.
Speaker 8: Right.
Speaker 4: Right.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 5: So you, how far, what is, what is that an hour?
Speaker 6: Yeah, about an hour.
Speaker 5: About an hour, yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah, about an hour from here.
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. And then where are the other guys? Are they kind of.
Speaker 4: Scott's in Rochester, and so is Ben, actually.
Speaker 5: Oh, okay, okay. Yeah, so you guys are spread out a little bit.
Speaker 6: A little bit.
Speaker 4: A little bit, but, you know, we're close enough where it's not problematic to practice and record.
Speaker 5: That's good. I'm trying to picture exactly where Milton is.
Speaker 4: It's just north of Rochester. It's really 10 minutes away.
Speaker 5: Oh, so you guys actually aren't that spread out then, because if Milton's close.
Speaker 4: To Rochester, Tommy's probably the furthest.
Speaker 5: And that's not far from Elliot.
Speaker 6: No, it's 20 minutes.
Speaker 5: Oh, okay, yeah, so you guys aren't that spread out.
Speaker 4: That's good.
Speaker 6: Yeah, jump on 16.
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5: Nice, nice. Now, is there a theme with these songs on Six Pack? Is there any particular overarching theme through these, or....
Speaker 6: I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 7: I mean, most of the bunch of them have different kinds of fun stories. I've always been someone who I'm a huge horror fanatic.
Speaker 3: Oh, really?
Speaker 7: So a lot of the stuff will be, you know, kind of cool. I mean, there's a song on there called Tarot Card. And actually, that's a cool story all about, you know, meeting an old gypsy lady who reads fortunes.
Speaker 6: At a carnival.
Speaker 7: And then at some point in the last years of her life, she starts seeing her own horrible death in people's palms. So she's forced to do this thing that she does for money and read people's palms. But actually every time she does it, she sees a horrible way that she ends her, you know, her, you know, cool story.
Speaker 6: I'm a storyteller.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 7: Some of the stuff has personal meanings. You throw some of that in, in there, but you know, yeah.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 6: The, uh, sorrow to celebration.
Speaker 1: Funny.
Speaker 7: You guys were talking about the pandemic and everything. And the sorrow to celebration thing has a little bit of that in there because it was like, uh, You know, one of the words is the wisdom of the sane, but I think this time they're wrong, which was a point where everyone was telling you, do this, do that.
Speaker 6: And, you know, you're kind of like, again.
Speaker 7: It's like, all right, these people are supposed to know what they're talking about, but what's really happening?
Speaker 6: You know, what's going on, you know?
Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
Speaker 5: Um, what about for the, uh, for the new, the new stuff? Cause you're working on, did you say two, two new songs?
Speaker 6: Those will probably be, I mean, one of them will probably be just an internet track.
Speaker 1: Oh really?
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 4: We might just release one just as a non album track. Uh, you know, we'll just, um, For you streamers out there. Yeah, we'll just get it. We'll just push it out, you know. But we are, you know, actively working on another album, you know. Slow but sure.
Speaker 7: It's a pile of new ideas, a bunch of demos, a bunch of stuff.
Speaker 6: It's been good.
Speaker 7: Like I said, I've been with these guys for like a year or so. And right out the gate, it was, you know, we had no problem coming up with some cool stuff.
Speaker 6: Which, I mean, that's how it should be, you know.
Speaker 5: Does any of the old material survive from before you were in the band?
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 5: Because you mentioned the sound changed a lot.
Speaker 4: Yeah. Now, I mean.
Speaker 6: We'll play one or two of the old ones live.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 3: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Now, some of them have had their lyrics completely redone.
Speaker 5: Right.
Speaker 4: Because, you know, I didn't want Tommy to come in and have to sing karaoke.
Speaker 2: Right.
Speaker 5: Right.
Speaker 4: It doesn't make sense, and usually it's not authentic, right? You can hear it in somebody's voice when they're trying to do something else that they don't really believe in. So that's why I told Tommy, I'm like, you've got an empty canvas here. And for me.
Speaker 7: What's cool is that when I came in, these guys were really open to just do something completely different. Because again, the other guy, it was heavy, you know what I mean? There wasn't a lot of singing going on, you know?
Speaker 1: Okay.
Speaker 7: So these guys, again, there was a couple of things where I stepped up and was doing some, some really like, uh, you know, harmony, vocal stuff and everything.
Speaker 6: And, you know, it's, it's been embraced. So it's been really cool for me.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 5: That's awesome. Are you guys playing a lot of shows? You've been playing a lot or not a lot.
Speaker 4: Uh, but you know, we, um, uh, you know, we kind of, uh, we just pick the ones that are going to make sense. Um, you know, where, where we fit in and things like that. I don't, I don't like to just go out there and just, you know, grab at anything just to play out. I want to play somewhere where there's going to be a crowd that our music can appeal to.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 5: I'm always curious about that because there's, there's different ways to look at it. Like some, like when I was, and we're talking, geez, when I was, I was in a band called my life crisis, like 20, geez, 20 years ago.
Speaker 4: Oh my God.
Speaker 5: And like, we would kind of just play any show we could get, you know what I mean? Like, and, And, you know, I remember it being a point of contention in the band, like, is this really smart?
Speaker 7: I mean, if there's a potential that somebody's going to enjoy what we do, we'll play.
Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
Speaker 4: Yeah.
Speaker 7: But if they said, you know, hey, listen, I mean, I don't know. Again, there's a polka act playing next month.
Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
Speaker 4: Do you guys want to open up? Or do you guys want to open up for this country band?
Speaker 5: We might scare people.
Speaker 4: I don't know. They're probably not going to like us that much. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. Plus, too, it's more... expensive to travel now too with gas being so expensive. And so you really, yeah, you really do have to kind of, kind of pick your spots with that. Um, is there anybody in the scene that you guys play a lot of shows with, you know, sometimes that happens sort of organically where you sort of unofficially team up with, uh, good.
Speaker 4: Buddies and lethal creed, um, uh, great band out, uh, uh, West Newfield, I guess they'd say they're out.
Speaker 5: Of, uh, I've heard the name.
Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4: Lethal creed there. Uh, you know, I would, they're going to hate me for, you know, pigeonholing them, but they're kind of a hardcore band to me. They got a lot of that kind of old school, hardcore edge, that New York hardcore kind of thing, and they're just incredible. They're a family band.
Speaker 5: Okay.
Speaker 4: It's, you know, the dad or grandpa on guitar, his son, the dad on drums, and he sings, and then his son is the bass player, and they're all extremely talented.
Speaker 5: I've heard of them because now i know why i recognize the name lethal creed because i've heard of of that what you just described yeah that's the family dynamic of that that's really cool.
Speaker 4: Yeah and they're great they've really embraced us and they're just really good people yeah all around so we just uh got along with them uh incredibly well right off the bat and uh yeah so we've been We've been doing some shows with them.
Speaker 5: Oh, that's awesome. If you're just joining us, we've got two of the guys from Gods Go First here with us in studio. I think we should play that song. What do you guys think? Should we play Tarot Card? Because, Tommy, you were talking about it.
Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that sounds great.
Speaker 5: That's a good story. This is from Six Pack, the album, or the EP, I should say. from I feel like six tracks it's kind of like right in between album and EP it's almost there but this is another great song from God's Go First check this out this is Tarot Card.
Speaker 1: We'll be right back.
Speaker 3: We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back.
Speaker 5: That is Tarot Card. The band is Gods Go First. That is from the EP, Six Pack. And guys, this has been wonderful. Of course, Jason Pelletier and Tommy Jake's with us here in studio. And where... Well, really two questions. One is, where's the best place for people to go online to keep up with everything that God's Go First is doing? And do you have anything that you want to plug as far as, I don't know if you guys are planning anywhere this weekend? Oh, I'm sorry. There we go.
Speaker 4: Sorry about that. No, we are not. As a matter of fact, we're sort of, you know, getting ready for the cold weather to hit. We're going to try and you know, shack up a bit and really push to get some more tracks done. So, you know, get a lot, a lot of progress made on our next album. But yeah, you know, we're on all the socials. You know, you can go, you know, you can, you can stream all our music, youtube.com slash at gods go first. But you can get our, our website kind of acts as a portal to all of our social there.
Speaker 4: Gods go first.com slash, We have a store there, and you can find everything.
Speaker 5: Yeah, fantastic. And any kind of an ETA on the new songs?
Speaker 1: No.
Speaker 4: Okay. I wish I could give you more than that.
Speaker 5: Understood, yeah.
Speaker 4: But we're shooting for, you know, hoping to maybe next year have, you know, be close.
Speaker 6: Okay, okay.
Speaker 5: Outstanding. Well, listen, Jason and Tommy, thank you guys both so much.
Speaker 3: Thank you.
Speaker 5: This has been wonderful to have you here. If you are listening live on Saturday, stick around. Adam Jocelyn is going to be joining us next. But right now, we're going to close out this segment with this, another track from Six Pack, the band is God's Go First, and this is called Ominous.
Speaker 2: I can't believe it's tomorrow. So much we see.
Speaker 1: I can't save you and I can't figure out where it all went wrong.
Speaker 2: You're still, you're hanging there. But now the end.
Speaker 1: You're slipping and I can't take you out I have nothing to say You can't be here now It's just the end of days You've got the edge Leap by the grave Hollowed.
Speaker 2: For life You stayed alive.
