Ryan Redwood returns with "The Back Room" | Matt Connarton Unleashed
Speaker 1: Such a great track. That is The back Room by
Speaker 1: Ryan Redwood and we're gonna be talking with Ryan in
Speaker 1: just a moment. Welcome everybody if you are listening live.
Speaker 1: On Saturday, October four, twenty twenty five, we have entered
Speaker 1: our number three new Marrow trace of Matt Connorton Unleashed,
Speaker 1: and we are live from the studios of w n
Speaker 1: H ninety five point three FM and Glorious Manchester, New
Speaker 1: Hampshire and Ryan returns. We had Ryan on the show
Speaker 1: recently to talk about his first single Tomorrow that we
Speaker 1: premiered on the show, and then we played The back
Speaker 1: Room recently for the first time on American radio. Another
Speaker 1: great track, and I think Ryan is on the line
Speaker 1: with us to be a WhatsApp Hi Ryan.
Speaker 2: Hello, Matt, how you doing mate? You okay?
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, welcome back to the show. Thank you for
Speaker 1: being patient. I know we're running a little bit behind,
Speaker 1: but great to talk to you again. I love that
Speaker 1: song so catchy.
Speaker 2: Thank you very much mate, and thank you again for
Speaker 2: having me back home.
Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely now that song. What can you tell us
Speaker 1: about that song? Because you know it sounds like it
Speaker 1: sounds like you know, a dude, a girl, you know
Speaker 1: that he's interested in and so forth. But I feel
Speaker 1: like there's some other there's some other things in there
Speaker 1: that you're kind of dealing with in the lyrics. So
Speaker 1: what can you tell us about that track? Yeah?
Speaker 3: Man, So it basically it started off it was going
Speaker 3: to be like a funny tune because me and my
Speaker 3: producer and best mate Asa, who I do everything with,
Speaker 3: write and record everything in the back room. So we
Speaker 3: like originally were like, let's write a funny sort of
Speaker 3: song about how we do everything in the back room
Speaker 3: and we never leave it and stuff. And then we
Speaker 3: sort of had the tune down, and then when I
Speaker 3: got to writing the lyrics, nothing funny came out. A
Speaker 3: lot of like things that I was probably dealing with
Speaker 3: internally sort of came out and just spilled onto the page,
Speaker 3: which I guess is what songwriting is all about, right, Yeah?
Speaker 1: Interesting? And what are some of those things that were
Speaker 1: you know, they come out in the song.
Speaker 3: I saw about like my ADHD and like how I
Speaker 3: feel like the anxiety of that sort of watches me
Speaker 3: as I'm sort of trying to make it with like
Speaker 3: music or whatever I'm doing at the time, and like
Speaker 3: how I can't really run away from it.
Speaker 2: If that makes sense.
Speaker 1: It does, it does. I think we talked about that
Speaker 1: the last time you were on the show with us too,
Speaker 1: about you know, how a lot of creative people have
Speaker 1: that ADHD and and and how it kind of uh
Speaker 1: informs what you do creatively, and how there are ways
Speaker 1: that you know it can actually be beneficial, it can
Speaker 1: it can help you to create. I think we we
Speaker 1: don't have to rehash all that because I think we
Speaker 1: talked about a lot of that last time. But it's
Speaker 1: interesting that that you kind of express that in the
Speaker 1: lyrics of the song. And again it's it's kind of like,
Speaker 1: you know, I listened to it and it's like okay,
Speaker 1: you know, and I went back and listened to it
Speaker 1: again and I was like, now there's something else going
Speaker 1: on here. It's interesting.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: Yeah.
Speaker 3: I like to sort of give them sort of like
Speaker 3: it's like a double meaning, I guess, because it's cool
Speaker 3: to have other people say, oh, this feels like this
Speaker 3: to me or I think it means this sort of thing,
Speaker 3: and then to have that like conversation like someone like
Speaker 3: yourself as well, and be able to be like, well,
Speaker 3: I when I wrote it, I meant this, but obviously
Speaker 3: you can interpret how how interpret sorry, however you want to.
Speaker 3: Really like that's I think that's the best bit about
Speaker 3: music really is that lyrics can mean anything to anyone, right.
Speaker 1: Right, right? Absolutely. What's also kind of fun, right it's
Speaker 1: it's a it's an adventure when you when you have
Speaker 1: an idea for a song and you and you embark
Speaker 1: on creating that and then it ends up being something
Speaker 1: different than what you had originally in mind. I mean,
Speaker 1: that's that there's something kind of satisfying about that, right
Speaker 1: when you because when you are able to surprise yourself
Speaker 1: as a songwriter and you go, oh, I didn't I
Speaker 1: didn't know this was gonna happen, but this is cool.
Speaker 1: I like this.
Speaker 3: You know, well that's literally what happened, like when it happened.
Speaker 3: And I had all these lyrics sort of written down,
Speaker 3: so I sort sometimes I start from like a line,
Speaker 3: or i'd write like a paragraph how I'm feeling or whatever.
Speaker 3: But and then I sat there and sort of reflected
Speaker 3: once the song was finished, and was like, what are
Speaker 3: these lyrics actually about?
Speaker 1: Yeah?
Speaker 3: And I was like, oh, it's actually about my mental health. Actually,
Speaker 3: I didn't really know what it was about when we
Speaker 3: recorded it and when I wrote the lyrics as such.
Speaker 3: It wasn't until a week later when when I've got
Speaker 3: the master's back and I was like, oh, yeah, it's
Speaker 3: about that.
Speaker 1: Well. It's interesting that when you when you're in a
Speaker 1: situation where you know, maybe you see someone who you
Speaker 1: find attractive and you're and you're contemplating. It's funny our
Speaker 1: our guests that we had on in the first hour
Speaker 1: of the show today, he had a he had a
Speaker 1: song that was kind of about that, and you're and
Speaker 1: you're you're contemplating on how you might be able to
Speaker 1: approach them. But at it's at that moment that so
Speaker 1: often all those things that go on in your head
Speaker 1: that might be hindering you in some way. That's that's
Speaker 1: really one of those moments where all that comes out
Speaker 1: right where you start, uh, you know, maybe doubting yourself
Speaker 1: or you know, should I do this, Should I approach
Speaker 1: this person, or should I just watch them? I suppose
Speaker 1: in this context from the back room, right, it's those
Speaker 1: moments where where you you start really questioning yourself and
Speaker 1: doubting yourself and and and all those those things about
Speaker 1: yourself that maybe are a little different.
Speaker 2: Well, one hundred.
Speaker 3: I'm quite I'm quite a confident person, like in general,
Speaker 3: and it isn't to like you say, until them sort
Speaker 3: of situations arise, whether it be talking to someone new
Speaker 3: or like a new job or something, or going for
Speaker 3: like an interview or whatever, then you're sort of like, oh, yeah,
Speaker 3: I do have some other things going on. There is
Speaker 3: there is something going on in my head that's not
Speaker 3: just look at me all the time, you know.
Speaker 1: Right now, what's a situation with as far as playing
Speaker 1: this live? Have you been able to play this out
Speaker 1: or you're doing I don't remember what your touring situation
Speaker 1: was the last time that we talked, but are you
Speaker 1: playing a lot of shows?
Speaker 2: So I haven't actually played this one live yet.
Speaker 3: I've got a run of shows coming up in November
Speaker 3: around the UK, so I'll be doing one in Liverpool, London,
Speaker 3: Norwige and hopefully Manchester.
Speaker 2: So should have quite a busy November.
Speaker 3: And that'll be the first time this one's been taken
Speaker 3: out on the road and given a given a live spin.
Speaker 1: Oh excellent. You must be excited about that because it's
Speaker 1: got a vibe, it's gotten an energy about it, you know.
Speaker 1: I imagine it'll go over really well with the live crowd.
Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope so, Like it's kind of one of
Speaker 3: those when it gets to the chorus where it just
Speaker 3: sort of opens up and becomes this other beast like
Speaker 3: in the verse is quite intimate and quite like personal,
Speaker 3: I guess. And then when that chorus hits in and
Speaker 3: then drums start going a bit mad and frashing on
Speaker 3: the crash symbol it starts, so yeah, like say, open up,
Speaker 3: and I hope people are getting on shoulders, throwing arms
Speaker 3: about all that sort of stuff.
Speaker 1: I like how you put that too, how it opens
Speaker 1: up in the chorus, because so much of so much
Speaker 1: of writing a great song is you know, you build
Speaker 1: tension in the verses and then the chorus is kind
Speaker 1: of almost like a relief or you know, it opens
Speaker 1: up and and this song that really is very much present.
Speaker 1: I think that concept in this song because they like,
Speaker 1: you hear the bassline in the beginning, you know that
Speaker 1: first verse, and it's very you know, it kind of
Speaker 1: makes you a little anxious, or at least it did
Speaker 1: me the first time. It was like, you know, it
Speaker 1: just there's there's an anxiety there almost in that in
Speaker 1: that bass. It's really in the baseline. I feel like
Speaker 1: that's kind of the secret to it, you know, and
Speaker 1: then you get to the chorus and it's like, Okay,
Speaker 1: it's almost like a relief a little bit. But I
Speaker 1: like that, you know, you build the tension and then
Speaker 1: you get to the chorus and it's like, okay, here
Speaker 1: we are.
Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I love doing that as well.
Speaker 3: I'm so glad you've picked up on that, And I
Speaker 3: think most people who have listened to it have said
Speaker 3: the same thing. They're sort of like, you're getting a
Speaker 3: bit moody in these verses, mate, and then when we
Speaker 3: get to the chorus, it's like, oh.
Speaker 1: Ryan's all right.
Speaker 3: I mean he's okay, like an uplifting sound in tune, right.
Speaker 3: But I'm glad we still sort of try to do
Speaker 3: that on purpose really because I like, like you said,
Speaker 3: I like the tension and then the release you get
Speaker 3: when when the chorus kicks in.
Speaker 2: For sure.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Now are you getting the airplay with this song
Speaker 1: over there yet or what's that situation?
Speaker 3: It's been going down really well, mate, good and I
Speaker 3: think it's probably gone down the best of any of
Speaker 3: my tunes ever have done, which is amazing. Yeah, a
Speaker 3: ton of radio stations have been picking up over here,
Speaker 3: like you guys as well, absolutely backing it and I
Speaker 3: love all that.
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been going down really well.
Speaker 1: Oh that's outstanding. That's outstanding. And then now are these
Speaker 1: are these songs gonna be part of a full album
Speaker 1: or do you have a full album or what? What's
Speaker 1: what's the situation there?
Speaker 2: So what we're doing?
Speaker 3: The plan is, we actually came up with this on Wenesday,
Speaker 3: so we had a we had a meeting on Wednesday
Speaker 3: just me and as Are, the guy who produces my tunes,
Speaker 3: and I was like, what should we do because I'm
Speaker 3: bored of just doing singles, like you say, I'd like
Speaker 3: to build up to like an album or something like that. Yeah,
Speaker 3: So that the next song will be another single, and
Speaker 3: then after that, I'm actually gonna be doing a five
Speaker 3: track EP. Okay, yeah, so that'd be exciting. Bit more
Speaker 3: I don't know. The next single is a little bit
Speaker 3: more less moody, little bit more less moody.
Speaker 2: Okay, okay, a little bit more uplifting.
Speaker 3: The lyrical content is still quite not dark, but still
Speaker 3: quite angry, a little bit of angst in there, okay.
Speaker 3: But the song itself is a little bit more happy,
Speaker 3: I guess. And then the EP is going to be
Speaker 3: a mixture of the two, hopefully gonna sort of bring
Speaker 3: some more riffy stuff in as well, which is going
Speaker 3: to be exciting because I've not done that in a
Speaker 3: long time. But yeah, I can't wait to get going.
Speaker 1: So does that mean, so will the EP be five
Speaker 1: news songs or will the EP include the songs that
Speaker 1: you've released already?
Speaker 3: There'll be five completely brand new tunes next year, hopefully
Speaker 3: I reckon about March time if I was to put
Speaker 3: a time on it. But yeah, five completely new tunes
Speaker 3: which I've already written. I was actually finishing off the
Speaker 3: lyrics to a couple before I got on and chatted
Speaker 3: with you.
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's exciting, man, It's exciting.
Speaker 1: Excellent, excellent. So the producer that you work with has
Speaker 1: he worked with you on everything that you've recorded.
Speaker 3: So he's worked with me on tomorrow and this one,
Speaker 3: the next one, and he will be the producer going forward.
Speaker 3: I used to work with another friend of mine called
Speaker 3: Sam Wilson on my older tracks. I'm very fortunate to
Speaker 3: have a lot of very very talented friends. Yeah, because
Speaker 3: we're all from like the same background and the same
Speaker 3: like music scene. So it's really cool to be able
Speaker 3: to pull on people like that and be like, oh,
Speaker 3: come on mate, let's go down the studio and sort
Speaker 3: of t I see what we can come up with,
Speaker 3: you know.
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's fantastic. And then so now when you play live,
Speaker 1: are you playing with a full band?
Speaker 3: So I'm hoping to be doing a full band soon,
Speaker 3: but at the moment, I've sort of doing the like
Speaker 3: acoustically on my own. I will say, if anyone's listening
Speaker 3: to this and you want to book me, I'm not
Speaker 3: on a boring acoustic artist guy who's bands in the
Speaker 3: corner and plays his song, Yeah, I'm very I'm very
Speaker 3: larger than life. Come on, then let's pretend there's a
Speaker 3: band here and let's go for it sort of thing.
Speaker 2: Nice. So yet will we do it a variety of
Speaker 2: different ways?
Speaker 3: Really, Sometimes like the guy who's produced my tune now
Speaker 3: Aaron or as he comes up on stage, me does
Speaker 3: some tunes in a duo setting to do it on
Speaker 3: my own, and then hopefully next year I'll be getting
Speaker 3: a proper live band sort now, I reckon.
Speaker 1: Yeah, excellent, excellent. Yeah, it's a lot of work.
Speaker 2: Let's tell me about it, mate.
Speaker 1: It's a lot of work putting all that together. Well,
Speaker 1: very good. So in a moment, I think we're going
Speaker 1: to and I wish, I wish we had more time.
Speaker 1: Like I said, we're running a little bit behind today,
Speaker 1: but I do want to play Tomorrow again at the
Speaker 1: end of the segment to close out, because I also
Speaker 1: love that song and I know, thank you mate, and
Speaker 1: I know we talked about that song the last time
Speaker 1: you were on. But for newer listeners who might not
Speaker 1: have heard that conversation, So Tomorrow and this is another
Speaker 1: song that I really related to in a big way
Speaker 1: because we'll tell us refresh our memories about the message
Speaker 1: behind it.
Speaker 3: Yeah, So Tomorrow is a bit of a bit of
Speaker 3: a deep one. It's about like climate change and how
Speaker 3: we're a bit scared to talk about them sort of
Speaker 3: issues still, and how I think we should still be
Speaker 3: talking We should be talking about those issues that why
Speaker 3: are we scared to talk about it? And sometimes when
Speaker 3: you bring them sort of topics up, people shy away
Speaker 3: from it or probably just like disregard you straight away
Speaker 3: because they think you're wrong. When you know it's happened
Speaker 3: in front of our eyes man to me, we got right,
Speaker 3: we'll start talking about these things.
Speaker 1: Right right exactly, Yeah, and you express that in the
Speaker 1: song and uh, yeah, it's funny we're having right now
Speaker 1: here in New Hampshire where we are in the US.
Speaker 1: We're about to have some eighty degree weather. Uh and
Speaker 1: it's October and that's pretty unusual.
Speaker 3: We got we've got a storm going on at the moment,
Speaker 3: but it's still I was like walking home earlier and
Speaker 3: it's rain and it's windy, it's cold and it's warm
Speaker 3: all at once. How was that happening?
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's crazy. Yeah, we're in a drought. We've
Speaker 1: got eighty degree weather in October. It's it's it's wild. Then.
Speaker 1: You know, the political climate in the US, I mean,
Speaker 1: I won't get into it, but I'll just say, you know,
Speaker 1: it's it's not going to get any better as far
Speaker 1: as addressing these issues, I'll just say.
Speaker 3: That I don't think it will overhear mate, So I
Speaker 3: think we're all in the same boat.
Speaker 1: I think we are. I think we very much are well, Ryan,
Speaker 1: So we will we will close out with that track
Speaker 1: before we let you go, though, Where should people know
Speaker 1: about where to find you online? To keep up with
Speaker 1: everything that you're doing and get access to your music
Speaker 1: and all that.
Speaker 2: I'm basically available everywhere.
Speaker 3: Any social media is just at Ryan Redwood fifty eight
Speaker 3: and then Spotify is to save just Ryan Redwood or
Speaker 3: Apple Music wherever you get your chunes.
Speaker 2: Yeah, just Ryan Redwood everywhere.
Speaker 1: Fantastic, fantastic Ryan. We will do this again when the
Speaker 1: next single is out. Please you know, let us know,
Speaker 1: let people know, and we'll well, we'd love to give
Speaker 1: it another premiere, probably have you back on to talk
Speaker 1: about it. And we love what you're doing. We're big fans,
Speaker 1: so keep up the great work.
Speaker 2: Oh, thank you so much for the support. I really
Speaker 2: do appreciate it. And yes, definitely next single, we'll be back.
Speaker 2: Let's do it.
Speaker 1: Awesome sounds good to me. All right, Ryan, We'll let
Speaker 1: you go.
Speaker 2: Thank you, take care, cheers, mate, Thank you very much.
Speaker 1: You got it all right. That is the great Ryan
Speaker 1: Redwood and we're going to close out this segment with
Speaker 1: This is the first single that we spun of Ryan's
Speaker 1: and I really love this song a lot. Pay attention
Speaker 1: to the lyrics. It does matter. This is called Tomorrow
